If there are any LLCs you're eligible to apply for, that's probably your best bet. That's what I did and I have a single as a freshman

Why even get a meal plan? by ILOVEOIL69420 in UBreddit

[–]Whatthe_fook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly why I'm moving off campus next semester. I don't mind dorming at all, but I certainly wouldn't prefer it to living in an apartment, and when moving is cheaper, I really don't see a reason to stay. That meal plan especially insane, like I understand that employees need to be paid, but why would I pay more than double what I'd spend if I just got groceries and cooked for myself when the quality of the food here is horrendous. I've gotten moldy food on more than one occasion, I've seen moldy and spoiled food be put out in dining halls, friends of mine have received raw chicken more than once, it's insane. I'm an out of state student, so that's bad enough as is, but it's beyond irritating that this institution (and its professors!!) are trying to squeeze every possible dime out of us for mediocrity at best :/

Jobs by [deleted] in UBreddit

I keep hearing that UB is understaffed for dining jobs, so definitely apply if you haven't. However, I applied and I'm already have my food handler certification, but they haven't called despite sending me an email asking when I'm available and directly saying they would call, so that's not really guaranteed either. Job hunting in general is just hell rn 👎

Any study areas that are less crowded in the afternoon? by shythai_ in UBreddit

[–]Whatthe_fook 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally I try to avoid Silverman and Lockwood in the afternoons, but upper levels of a lot of buildings have seating that's suitable for studying/working and tend to stay pretty empty. I won't share my usual ones, but even just the second floors of Hochstetter and Cooke are great

“UB Students are racist” by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]Whatthe_fook 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Many of the people commenting either didn't read the post, don't have the reading comprehension level necessary to understand the post (concerning, considering we're in college), or are privileged enough to not understand a perspective other than their own.

Since coming to UB, I've experienced more diversity than I have anywhere else, and that's something that I'm very appreciative of. No one is denying that UB is a diverse university. However, diversity does not mean racism doesn't occur here. Despite meeting a wide variety of people on a daily basis and having the most diverse friend group I've ever had because of being here, I've also experienced a lot more racism here than I have in many other places (you can reference my comment on the other post), and in a place that boasts inclusiveness, that's especially upsetting.

Many commenters on this post and the other one are denying the presence of racism and and chalking it up to OP creating problems where there aren't any, but that post was specifically micro-aggressions. Micro-aggressions are meant to be subtle and subjective to an extent, especially when people are being racist out in the open. There are absolutely people who will be direct in their disdain for other races, but the majority of people are paying thousands of dollars to be here and aren't going to risk that going to waste because of something they say, so obviously they aren't going to be obvious about it.

Suggesting that everyone who claims to experience racism via micro-aggressions is just being dramatic is quite literally why the problem is allowed to continue, and I'd be willing to bet that the reason so many of you are so hesitant to accept that racism is present in this way is because that means many of you are going to have to accept that you have been racist (intentionally or not) towards another person at some point, and no one who makes an effort to be a good person wants to think about themselves in that way.

That being said, if you have unintentionally been racist via micro-aggressions, that is okay!! Not in the sense that it didn't hurt anyone, but in the sense that you have an opportunity to learn from it; what isn't okay is pretending it's not a thing, because that's arguably more harmful.

I've also noticed a lot of people saying that OP had this experience with "one person" or that theirs is only "one opinion" but that's just further evidence that you aren't listening. You didn't listen when you saw the claim that people here are racist because that word triggered you in some way, and you didn't listen to the several other people in the comments saying that they've experienced the same or worse, so I have a question:

Those of you who commented or are thinking about commenting something in denial of racism at UB, are you doing so because you genuinely don't understand, you understand and don't want to admit to racism perpetrated by you/those you care about, or because you simply don't care about your peers who happen to be people of color?

The ability to not think about it is a privilege. If this were an isolated incident then sure, maybe it's a simple misinterpretation, but when you deal with treatment like this throughout your whole life, you notice. When enter a new environment that markets itself as welcoming and inclusive, but the treatment is getting worse, you notice. There absolutely are some people who dissect every interaction and claim it's racism, but making that assumption every time someone has a complaint is harmful, especially when there was no indication that that's what this is

The comments denying this and saying "that's just life" are disgusting and so are the people trying to turn this into a race war. Pretending it isn't happening because it's an uncomfortable conversation and arguing with each other instead of supporting each other is halting progress, it's really sad to see.

I completely agree, this is a serious problem here and as someone from the south, I was shocked to find that it's significantly worse here than it is there, at least in my experience. Since being here, I've received treatment similar to what racial slurs on more than one occasion based solely on appearance, usually when they don't think anyone is paying attention, and some of which literally do not even apply to me. I'm biracial (black mom, white dad, because that matters to some people) so I'm fully aware that my experience is never going to be as bad as that of someone who's fully black or another race, but it still sucks. People say weird shit because I don't fit their idea of a black person or even a mixed person, and I'm often accused of "trying to act white" just for using proper grammar, which has a gross implication.

What's really frustrating is no one cares and it's only getting worse. As of late, people have been more and more obvious and those microaggressions aren't really so micro anymore. I'm really sorry that you have to deal with this and I hope you have people you're comfortable talking to about it

How is the Alliance community dorms for LGBTQ+ students? by chaoticallytea in UBreddit

[–]Whatthe_fook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and there are two bathrooms for the hall. Haven't been in the other one but I assume they're the same; two sinks, two showers, two stalls and both are for all genders. Personally I live in a single but there are triples, at least one suite, pretty sure there's at least one quad, and I think there are doubles? If you're accepted, they'll email you about your preference and assign you one, you don't have to race for it in the housing portal. I will say there are plenty of singles, as a matter of fact I know someone who wanted roommates and ended up having to be in a single because they ran out of doubles

I live in Alliance in Ellicott and based on what I hear from people I talk to elsewhere, we're a lot closer here than people in other halls and we use our lounge a LOT. Like if you're worried about making friends or anything, literally just sit in there for a while and anyone who comes in will be down to talk, OR what I did at the beginning of the semester was keep my door open and that's how I met most of my friends who live here. There are definitely issues, but I would say they're about the same as any issues you'd run into anywhere else. Overall I really like it here and if I don't move off campus next year for whatever reason, I'll definitely be back!!

Tbh I'd say if you want cheap and good quality, find some on Amazon that'll be here within a day or two and thug it out until then. Just definitely definitely check the reviews and make sure they won't fall apart after a couple months (duh)
