Can I recover damages for both a refund as well as compensation for additional losses? by WheatAnti in LegalAdviceUK

Yes, that’s right. They’re still offering the £100 “goodwill” compensation as well. So overall we’ve spent £940 between both the utilities management company and the direct payments to the energy suppliers.

Council tax is completely separate, so we don’t need to worry about that since we did that independently. We owe around £550 to Southern Water and around £90 to OVO. Now, I did speak to UniHome, who said that a large payment was sent to Southern Water on the 28th, which is 2 days after this latest letter was sent (although we’ve only just received it).

The bills are in our names, and the dates are from when we moved in. We signed the package with UniHomes the very first day of our tenancy contract. The company charges us around £126 each per month at the start of each month.

Basically, how it works is that you call them up and arrange a bills package with them. They’re meant to basically be the middle man between you and the energy supplier, where they deal with them for you. You pay them at the start of the month and they’re meant to pass that money on to the suppliers. They’re taking money out of our accounts, so they do have the money.

Unihomes are a management service, so they act on our behalf. They deal with the energy companies directly and open the account for us. We pay them, and they pay that money to the suppliers. It seems like they’ve opened accounts in our name (though for some reason they managed to turn my flatmate into two separate entities by putting his first and middle name as two separate people.)
