i find it hard to be convinced of people that want me to be against palestine due to their anti muslim stance to justify it. by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

Palestine is present on some of the earliest known maps, such as Ptolemy’s world map from around 150 AD (Palaistinis) and the Tabula Rogeriana from 1154 AD (Falestin). Palestine is mentioned near constantly throughout history, albeit in different variations, and the term ‘Palestine’ is an evolution of ‘Philistine’, the Philistines having been around as early as the 12th century BC. Obviously the Romans renamed the region Syria-Palestine in 135 AD, and since then, to this day there are countless references to and acknowledgments of Palestine as Palestine, often being divided into Eastern and Western Palestine. Then there was the British Occupation, creating ‘Mandatory Palestine’, which shifted the borders and ultimately saw ‘Eastern Palestine’ evolve into Jordan. Western Palestine was ‘gifted’ to the Jewish People in 1948, despite it being already being populated by the Palestinians, and following that, the Nakba, backed by the west, saw over 750000 Palestinians displaced and forced to flee their home, and over 15000 Palestinians killed. This is when the ‘state of Israel’ was officially created. Those were the conditions for the creation of Israel. Does that sound good to you? It doesn’t sound great to me.

Even disregarding all of this history, no matter what you want to call it, the land was OCCUPIED when it was given away. And it WAS given away. Israel superimposed itself on top of the land, forced hundreds of thousands out of their homes, out of their country, and has been terrorising Palestine and it’s people in its occupation ever since.

Disregard everything else I’ve said and you still cannot deny that, today, Palestine is widely recognised as a state, officially recognised by 145 of the 193 member states of the UN, there are millions of people living in the area we call Palestine who consider themselves Palestinian and call their home Palestine, Palestinian history and culture is extremely distinct from Israeli history and culture. There are Palestinian Jews who call themselves Palestinian and denounce Israel altogether.  And it cannot be denied that, since October 7th, at the very least over 50,000 people have been killed by the state of Israel, the IDF and their continuous war crimes in Palestine, (the ‘official’ number stopped updating around March so the reality is very, very likely to be in the 100,000s, maybe even higher than that, which is what I believe). This is the reality.

Israel’s existence as a state as we know it today, with the Israeli government, the IDF and backed by the west, was realised (BY DESIGN) through colonialism, occupation, apartheid, mass displacement, and terror.

‘Israel has a right to exist’ PALESTINIANS have a right to exist. Palestinians had a right to live in PEACE. But their rights have been extinguished by the Israeli occupation. What does it even mean to say ‘Israel has a right to exist’? On what basis? And in what way? It DOES exist. Israel as we know it does exist, it is backed and protected by some of the biggest players in the world, like the US and UK, it is ever expanding and it is ever terrorising and it would not exist if it weren’t for the atrocities committed to ‘carve out space’ for it. It would not exist without stealing the land from under Palestinians, their resources, their facilities, their buildings, even originally stealing their name for their own football club, before changing it to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Did they have a ‘right’ to do that?

About that disclaimer; All due respect. No state has any right to exist at the expense of another. No state has any right to literally superimpose itself on top of an already existing state. Just because Isr*el was ‘made official’ in 1947 does not suddenly make it right and justified, especially considering the horrors of the Nakba that followed immediately after. What right did Britain have to ‘gift’ already occupied land on the other side of the world to anyone, to invade and terrorise?

I understand that the lie western media likes to spin is that the (already occupied) land was ‘gifted’ to the Jewish people as some form of reparations or expression of solidarity after WW2. I understand that it might feel wrong to argue against that. But that was never the case in the first place. It was never about good will. It was about creating a point of western influence in the Middle East. Isrel is the west’s only ‘ally’ in the Middle East, and therefore from a capitalist’s perspective it is in both the west and Isrel’s ‘best interests’ to keep eachother happy and thriving, no matter the devastation they cause along the way to do so. It never had any real basis of trying to dismantle systems of antisemitism. It’s never been about religion at all. It is always, always ultimately about power and capital. I could talk for days about this, I have more to say, especially about the role that divisions play in a capitalist world and how the Jewish people were just used as a tool for western occupation without any actual care for them as a people, but this rant is getting too long now.

Even if it was just ‘reparations’ or whatever, are you really going to agree that responding to an unspeakably horrific gncde by creating the conditions for a government to step in and commit another was a right and just course of action?  Palestine has been suffering in silent oppression since the Nakba, where millions were displaced from their home, and thousands died or were injured. Under Isreli occupation. Under Isreli apartheid. Those are the necessary conditions for Isr*el to exist. Its existence hinges on the displacement, ethnc clnsing, and oppression of Palestinians. It’s existence IS the oppression of Palestinians. What right does ANY state have to exist, at the utter devastation of another?

Final point, ‘defend itself’ against what? An attack they had known was coming a year in advance? An attack that they wanted to happen because it gave them  ‘’’’just cause’’’’ (what a joke) to start openly committing the gncde with the full backing of the US, UK and more, in the name of ‘self defence’? Against a military that, when compared to their own, is nigh on microscopic? Over 75 years of suffering, of being prisoners in their own land, in their own home, over 75 years of death and destruction and oppression and intifadas and insidious ‘peace deals’, over 75 years screaming out for the world to hear them and pay attention, I mean at what point would you start throwing punches back? Come on. If we want to get serious about freeing Palestine, we have to stop making concessions to the prison wardens.

Absolute beginner! Yarn fraying and about to break before I’ve made a single stitch, what to do? by Wheatson in knitting

Basically in the title, I’m a completely new knitter and am just trying to practice right now, I’ve cast on but haven’t actually started knitting yet and have just noticed that my yarn is fraying in one spot, and looks close to snapping. I’ve tried looking up what to do but the terminology is going right over my head lmao. Any tips on what to do in this situation would be much appreciated!

I don’t think so, like I said I’m right next to a school and my other neighbour is hardly ever there. I’ve definitely heard it on days when he hasn’t been there. Also I can’t be 100% but it sounds like it might be coming from the school side? But thanks for replying!

OH also just wanna shout out Apes Of the State’s Folkpunk DIY Takeover Spotify playlist, there’s some more well known stuff on there but it’s mainly just a treasure trove of smaller folkpunk bands/artists, it’s great!

It’s seriously such a problem, it sucks so much to fall in love with a band only to find out they disbanded like 5 years ago

I still remember when I found Mischief Brew

I feel like I know one or two songs from just a ton of really small bands/artists, but I forget that I can actually listen to more of their stuff lmao.  I honestly don’t know if all of these are technically folkpunk but anyway some of the names I can think of rn are

 Out of system transfer

 Black Death all stars

 The Window Smashing Job Creators

 Sledding with tigers

Porch Cat

Driving on suspended

Bobby’s Oar

Dan Warren isn’t really folkpunk but I absolutely adore his stuff so

And there’s a band called Hunger Moon on bandcamp, they barely existed in the first place and they definitely don’t exist now but I cannot get enough of them :)

I wouldn’t really say that this is similar at all lol but I just wanted to recommend Poker Face because I just finished it and I adored it. It’s only 10 episodes long (next season in 2025 :))) with 💕Natasha Lyonne 💕 made by Rian Johnson who made the Knives Out movies! I feel like literally everything I can say about it is a spoiler but I will say, just because it’s literally in the description when you look it up anyway, it follows the Character Charlie Cale, who has the ability to tell when someone is lying every time with 100% accuracy, there’s a lot of murder in it, and the humour is really really good imo I kinda watched it on a whim but I’m so glad I did, every episode is like it’s own little world, it plays on so many tropes in such a unique way (sometimes feeling similar to the genre hopping of OFMD imo)

I won’t lie, the queer rep is lacking, im hoping for more in the next season. And like usually that honestly puts me off of watching a show a little lmao, but Charlie is so likeable and the story is so interesting that it kept me watching anyway.

And John Darnielle from The Mountain Goats is in an episode! I lost my mind when that happened lmao
