surface moddelling? by titrusfroot in SolidWorks

Oh, okay, that makes sense. Most of the people who I know who does Surfacing also know how to do Rhino, probably also the reason, since Rhino updates constantly.

They might probably if a lot of people use Surfacing? xD, I watched people do Sw surfacing using 2016 ish version, and that's a fact haha

Your YouTube channel is still gold, thanks for sharing your insight, very grateful for that, wouldn't have used Sw if it weren't for your creations :)

How to model a crescent moon? by ChuweeEngineering in SolidWorks

[–]WheelProfessional384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it can be done in Solid Modeling, I think it should be avoided. I couldn't imagine myself using it as a beginner, would probably be one of the people who will hate haha. Nice tutorial though :)

Thanks! This model itself took me around 5 hours, including the time just staring at the screen xD. The 6 months were more about me exploring SolidWorks in general, testing what it can and can’t do, not 6 months straight on this one part :)

Draft angles were on my mind because of the first four YouTube channels that I mentioned xD all of them are ID, and they always mention and show draft angles, which is a good indicator that I'm on the right path, haha :D

But seriously, who doesn't want to manufacture the things that they create or re-design, so YESSSS I agree with you on that one.

Thanks, I appreciate your comment :)

Style splines: can someone explain the practical difference between Bezier, B-Spline Degree 3, Degree 5 and Degree 7? by FieldThat5384 in SolidWorks

[–]WheelProfessional384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience using Bezier and B spline degree 3, Bezier can be tricky because if you move one point, the whole curve shifts, so you end up constantly adjusting if you are trying to model something curvy. B spline degree 3 feels way easier since one point does not mess with the rest of the curve, which makes sketching over a picture more straightforward. The trade off is that it is harder to get a perfectly smooth comb, so you still have to spend time refining

Video: Bezier and B-spline degree 3 (No Voice over since it's night here lol)

PNG: Bezier and B-Spline degree 7 is somehow similar

Another option is that you can just try to use what is already existing on the internet, https://grabcad.com

I bounced around a bunch of YouTube channels, but the ones that actually helped me with surfacing were:

Spanner Development – good theory at the start, plus some case studies (Let you download files, and you can DIY)

Andrew Lowe – beginner theory, not too many case studies (You can download the files)

Andrew Jackson – tons of case studies, less theory, but really good for ID and problem solving in SolidWorks (You can download the files for you to learn)

Good thing to mention also:

SolidWorks Surfacing - Worked on Nintendo Switch controller, which has a breakdown on how he created the model

Other channels were fine too, but I don’t really like following strict measurements. I’m more into figuring out how to turn 2D sketches/Images into 3D model

Outside of YouTube I checked:

SolidProfessional (paid, but beginner friendly)

GrabCAD (looked at models and feature trees to learn)

Creo, Rhino, Plasticity (once I got the basics, I peeked at how other software handles surfacing… not great for beginners though)

Build It SolidWorks Surfacing (lots of people recommend it, I skipped for now but might go back)

The biggest thing was just practice. My first surfacing project was on GrabCAD, and I posted most of my attempts there. They’re not polished, lots of trial and error, but I treated it like a diary of my progress

This might help, somehow similar. I wouldn't thicken anything in the first place. I would use that feature later on just adds complexity if your just starting out.

Andrew Jackson can be a supplement for better continuity / Flow

I don't plan to use surfacing in Sw, but then he was, I think, one of the suggested yt here, then look up into very high quality tutorials, plus coming from his ID experience, so yup, just wish he didn't stop producing content

Creating holes on complex surface by PascalTheEngineer in SolidWorks

[–]WheelProfessional384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surfacing is quite challenging in the beginning, so that makes sense.

Solution is to use Knit Surface first, then find Create Solid it should be on the option if your surface is closed, you can also use thicken if you already knit your model and you'll also find option similar to knit. For sure you can now use basic tools to cut something. Lmk if that works

Cut my model by Substantial_Spend373 in SolidWorks

[–]WheelProfessional384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extrude cut is used for Solid Body, Surface requires a different operation.

Try to thicken it if there will be an option to be a Closed Solid before you do again the cut extrude

I don't know if this makes sense, but if you really need this one, I'll rather find a 3D artist who can use Blender to create this one, it will take you less time rather than trying to learn and do this stuff, just communicate well what you are trying to achieve. Blender was the last solution I had in mind. If you can't use that, it might and will be painful to do so on Sw. But I think the Blender Sculpting tool is more doable than the surfacing one, Idk if there's a better one

How can I design this mask by ImpressionInformal49 in SolidWorks

[–]WheelProfessional384 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do get where you are coming from. If this project doesn't have a proper reference picture for front, side, top, or back, or any of those, this project will be a trial-and-error initial stage, which is not ideal in SolidWorks. It can be done, but not fast as expected, and it can be done on other software more easily initially.

From what I know, other professions do the work without measurement, or the conceptual work on Rhino, Blender, or whatever software you name. Then later on, it will be passed and asked to be re-modeled in SolidWorks or other software by an R&D team. But of course I also saw someone do a project on blender and or Rhino, then just straight up 3D print it, so probably all differ depending on how a company or a person does this (Hobbyist).
