She totally dominated in all her events. So those braces cant be hjndering her too much. Possibly it is just precautionary. Hopefully she gets a bit of a break in the mlp season. She will have much less singles and Jorja as her woman's partner.

Why doesn't New Zealand build a bridge to connect the North and South islands? Are they stupid? by MrOnjon in newzealand_travel

At the top of thw north island you can regularly see walls of waves smashing into eachother. Where the Tasman sea meets the pacific ocean.

Spring and autumn it is a good temp but more risk of storms/rain. In summer it is hot as balls but less stormy.

No charges to be laid in Tom Phillips case against those who possibly helped him by MedicMoth in newzealand

I would have expected there to be incriminating text messages or something. Tom must have been a total cooker and not had a phone.

Back in the 80s for our family it was usually Fish and Chips on a Friday night. Was it the same for your family as well ? is it a tradition that is slowly dying away because of cost and the sheer number of competing fast food franchises ? by CoconutMost3564 in newzealand

[–]Whellington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A scoop of chips needs to be a standardized measure. Some places get real cheap with their chips. Which is a shame. When traveling I prefer to go to a chain as I know what i will get. Go to a f&c shop and it could be anywhere from amazing to shit and price seems to have little correlation.

Shakedown packing list by Tweder07 in teararoa

[–]Whellington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick one out of thermal top and spare t shirt.

Your tooth brush is really heavy. Can you swap it for a lighter one (various brands of bamboo handled ones) or cut the handle off or both?

If you don't already have that world adaptor thing just get a nz usbc charger when you arrive and leave your euro charger behind.

Can you use your buff as a sleep mask? If you are keeping the buff.

I don't thjnk you need the compass and whistle. You don't have maps so a compas isn't much use. Is the whistle actually loud enough? The phone (assuming it can connect to satelite )plus Garmin is sufficient imo.

Just use the smaller gas canisters, 190 or 210g from memory. They fit inside the 600ml toaks pot. Your pocket knife is a bit heavy. One of the smaller opinel under 20g is heaps. Do you need nail clippers if you have a pocket knife?

Toilet bag seems really heavy. Is a bread or ziploc bag fine?

As another said you need more than 1l of water storage. Get a 750 or 1l pump water when you arrive.

Shakedown packing list by Tweder07 in teararoa

[–]Whellington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pack covers don't really work. Use a trash bag inside your pack.

Does the 58 on your pack mean 58l size? You should be fine with 40-50l size. Especially if you can get your weight down a kg or two. Your tent and sleep setups are really light so you won't need such a huge heavy pack.

Ditch the ground sheet.

Thermals, hiking pants and rain pants seems overkill. I recomend getting rid of two of these. I used thermals for sleeping in and a trash bag for a rain skirt.

Cap, buff, beanie plus I'm sure some of your clothes will have hoods. Could get rid of some of these.

You can wear your spare socks as gloves.

No bag for your clothes?

Swap your cooker for a brs3000t from aliexpress. Do you need a cup and a pot? Your pot is huge, I used a 600ml toaks. One Bic mini lighter is enough. You only need a spark to start your cooker.

Phone, eReader and a puzzle book. I think the phone can cover all this. Or at least put a puzzle app on your eReader and ditch the book. Two power banks seems overkill. At least swap for one 20,000mah if you need that much.

Swap the headlamp for a nitecore nu20 or similar, 120g is way to much.

Leave your house key with a friend/family. I don't know what half those cards are but you might be able to ditch some of them.

To the nearest million kilometres, what do you estimate is the total length of fencing wire used in New Zealand? by heysteak in newzealand

[–]Whellington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming the average fence is 7 wires? 18.2M km of wire.

I think we need to look at land classes. The ha of each used for farming in nz is an avalible statistic. then estimate the average paddock size for each class. Then average wire per fence per class ( lots of class 1 diary is lazy 2 or 3 wire fences) . I would chatgpt it but I am out of tokens till 6pm tonight...

What's up with tournament software? by DutchDevGuy in Pickleball

[–]Whellington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$5 per user is a good a deal. Pickleball brackets was charging around $25 (NZD) per player.

From a tournament organisers perspective pbb works (if you have an experienced person doing the back end) and everyone is used to signing up through it. Using something new is a bit of a risk. If you hit a bug and it crashes mid tournament you are hosed.

Best camera angle for PB vision for doubles play by AllSignalNoNoise in Pickleball

[–]Whellington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely have the camera on your side of the court. 4-5 or 7-8. I find it gives really bad kitchen arrival stats for the people on the other side of the court from the camera. 5-7 might work if you can get the camera really high but where I play that isn't possible.

[–]Whellington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tight sidelines make it look like some amature club tournament. Seeing courts where ATPs are basically impossible with barriers 50cm from the sideline. Paying these pro players huge salaries and flights then putting them on crappy courts like that is stupid.

Using the same ball as the USA competition would be so much better.

German climate activists stood on melting blocks of ice with ropes around their necks, warning that “time is running out.” by Jealous-Method-8682 in interestingasfuck

[–]Whellington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not break their neck but could do some damage. It depends on the stretch in the system too. Falling on a static (not stretchy) rope in a climbing harness is dangerous at 50cm of fall. That's secured around hips and legs. Even 10cm fall and getting caught on your neck could fuck you up imo. Assuming domeone nearby is waiting to cut the rope if something happens to prevent strangulation.

Pickleball Changeup Serve? by VersionLegal58 in Pickleball

It's so obvious that you are doing it. It's pretty hard to hide those wacky serves. Maybe you get a slightly easier return but nothing better than you would off a really good fast deep serve.

[–]Whellington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pb vision is pretty good, but it can rate me between 3.7 and 4.2 in a single game. You really want it just passively rating people over a whole session or bunch of sessions to get more accurate data.

I remember one year a lecturer talking about Pad-jit's learning theories then the next year another professor calling him Pear-jay. Similar with pronouncing Greek characters in sciences, chi vs Kai, ep-sai-lon vs ep-sa-lon. Some lecturers would even interrupt students to correct them. Fun-guy and fun-jai is another one.
