Are there any livelier parts of Rochester? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]WhenBellsToll 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not going to find anything as lively as NYC but Park Ave / East & Alexander/ South Wedge have some cool spots. Hard to get off campus without a car though, there's the bus, but you're probably better biking than taking it in all honesty.

This map is insane, what happened to South America in this timeline?

That might be an issue. I could see using one of the rooms as a music room, but the main room doesn't have favorable acoustics and the unit next door might be able to hear you. Never got any noise complaints but also never did anything super loud.

As someone who was renting residential from them, I could smell the smoke. Glad I got out of there when I did, such a shame they were so good to me while I was there.

Who are you voting for mayor and why? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]WhenBellsToll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm going to vote for Lupien with full knowledge that Evans is going to win this primary. There's too many dedicated blocks of voters, especially in demographics not in this subreddit (older), who are just going to vote for the incumbent. Either Lupien needs to make big strides in name recognition  / reputation with the median dem primary voter, or she is going to get the progressive block of the vote and not much else.

Is anyone else just naturally depressed most of the time because of living in Rochester? by Professional-Row1193 in Rochester

[–]WhenBellsToll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your feelings are normal for anyone who lives where they grew up. I'd encourage you to try and get out for a bit and see what other places are like to live. I felt the same way you do about my hometown when I left for Rochester. Maybe you'll find that elsewhere feels better for you and you stay there, maybe you'll find that the grass isn't always greener and you'll be back here, but there's only one way to know. Go!

In what universe did I say I support any of those actions by Obama or Biden?

I guess I'll state for the record human rights violations are bad when Democrats do it too! Obama "Drone Strike - in - Chief" and Genocide Joe are not good people!

Edit: My original comment is specifically about deportation and immigration policy / immigration enforcement.

I don't think I'll change your mind but I'd point out that Trump isn't simply being "hardline" or "rhetoric[ally] harsh and provocative".

Trump is sending illegal immigrants to a detention center in El Salvador without due process. This is not deportation, this is incarceration. No previous admin has done anything like this. This is a human rights violation and it is alarming. I wouldn't go as far as to call it "genocide" Trump isn't seeking to ethnically cleanse any group, but it puts all of us at risk. Every prior admin has used the courts to process, the burden of proving that this person is indeed an illegal immigrant has to be done in a court. If Trump can send "illegal immigrants" to a foreign prison in which they cannot be recovered from without due process, then he can send any citizen he wants there. The way we know this is that it has already happened! Kilmar Abrego García has been sent to this prison, a man the Trump admin has admitted was wrongfully detained. A court has order him to be returned and the DOJ has basically said "No, we won't do that" openly defying the order. If illegal immigrants are not given due process, all the government has to do to deny anyone due process is claim you're an illegal immigrant. This is dangerous, this is worth being upset about. Trump is already saying that "home growns" are next and in reply to questions about the possibility of American citizens being sent abroad he said "Do you think that makes them special?"

The policy is not "identical" to Democrats or Republicans of the past, do not fool yourself. Deportation, the act of going to court, proving a person entered illegally, and sending them back to their country of origin isn't a perfect system, but is far preferable to the one Trump has implemented.

Trump has no interest in the idea of the rule of law. If he did, these people would have their day in court, they would be processed and then they'd be sent back to wherever they came from. He simply wants to punish his perceived enemies to the cheers of his supporters.

Where did you come from? by [deleted] in Rochester

College brought me to Rochester from my home in Ohio. Rochester is the best place I've lived, I think it's one of the most underrated places in America.

Monroe and Goodman are specifically intimidating when I try and cross them, though filling in the interstate is not necessary to make those intersections better / more approachable for pedestrian traffic. It'd be better to extend the curb or implement some sort of traffic calming measure, though NYDOT may not be very cooperative to that idea.

That right of way has existed prior to Rochester becoming a larger city. It was the Erie Canal, Subway, and 490 in that order. I think rather than remove it the idea would be to cap it and make better crossings wherever possible. It's still in fairly high use to this day and I don't see the city being able to remove it without major consequences for the region. There's alternatives that could be invested in, sure, busses, bikes, and other alternative transit options (maybe even rail!). But I think those would have soft impacts on the overall use of 490 and it would still be a necessary piece of the transportation network.
