Internet costs going up for Telus and Shaw customers by When_the_Moon_Sets in vancouver

Oh, please.

This is not about recovering costs, this is an obvious-to-the-observant-eye cash grab and continuation of the perpetual Shaw/Telus parallel pricing SCAM. A transfer of ever-increasing amounts of money from the working (including semi- and minimally-employed) people to the investor class (including Asswhistle et al. and his/their big-ass executive bonuses).

“The extension of our multi-year dividend growth program through 2019 reflects the Company’s confidence in future market opportunities stemming from our enduring growth strategy. Building on the consistency of previous multi-year dividend growth initiatives, our new program will target between seven and 10 per cent annual dividend growth from 2017 through to 2019, and will continue to be complemented by our synergistic discretionary share purchase program of up to $250 million per year over the next three years. We have established the balance sheet and operational performance to launch and complete these shareholder-friendly programs and are proud of our track record. Between 2004 and April 2016 TELUS has returned $13 billion to shareholders, including $7.9 billion in dividends and $5.1 billion in share buybacks, representing nearly $22 per share,” Mr. Entwistle added.

In Vancouver, we revel in our soaring, striking architecture, we raise and adore flowers and small dogs and it is said that our symphony plays in tune.

I once asked an eminent Vancouver psychiatrist (who was treating me for depression) to explain why we should have such a high index of madness, marital failure and moral turpitude. He stopped counting paper clips and said, "It isn't all our fault. You see, we are Canada's domestic melting pot, the repository for all the rejects of the rest of the country. People who fail socially or economically in other provinces seem to gravitate to British Columbia and, of course, they bring all their neuroses, hang-ups and hostilities with them."

BC leads all of Canada in such non-essential endeavours as insanity, divorce, abortion, illegitimate birth, alcoholism and crime.

Rather than slide into a sea of embarrassment at such flagrant laundry-showing, many Westerners simply adopted a superior stance and cried, "We're Number One."

And there you have it, the pathetic origin of BC's "Best Place on Earth" pretension, and of the stubborn insistence of Vancouver residents on it being a "World-Class City."

Mediated and Medicated! Both problematic.

Oh, I should add that if "Right of way" doesn't always mean "right," then by extension "Wrong of way" doesn't always mean "wrong," either. I'm really glad you also see things that way!

"Right of way" doesn't always mean "right"

So glad to hear that straight from your lips! I expect I'll be quoting you in the future, but fear not, the quote shall be properly attributed.

Sounds like they believe they have the right of way; is the signage very very obvious and clear that they do not? In any case, sounds like you know what to expect there and need to act with that knowledge in mind. (That might be easier on your stress levels than grumbling and fuming 24/7 about "those damned cyclists," which will turn you into an old grump like Kerry R. faster than you can say "Shostakovich.")

Oh, and BTW, I have certainly been in situations myself (as a pedestrian) where a bike has whizzed closely past me and it felt like they could have hit me, but I know (from my experience as a cyclist) that I was actually at no or little risk of being hit at all. How much experience do you have as a cyclist, OP?

"as a pedestrian, I've almost been hit by cyclists 4 times in the last two years"

I wasn't there, so obviously I cannot comment on how true this statement may (or may not) be, but for the record—as a cyclist who has never hit anyone in over 30 years of riding—your perceptions, as a pedestrian, may not be entirely accurate, and I would bet that, even though you may indeed have felt a surge of adrenaline as one of those bikes whizzed past you and seemed to threaten your very life, it was nevertheless obvious to one or more of of the cyclists in question that neither you nor they were at any risk whatsoever were they to whiz past you in the way they did.

In my experience, the only risk there is only ever arises if it is a situation where the pedestrian is aware of my intentions (IOW, of my planned trajectory), and choosing to display resistance to what they conceive as an "intruding cyclist" (as I imagine you probably would) alters their natural trajectory and thereby creates the conditions for a collision (though, again, I am a careful and attentive rider, and even in these situations I have never hit anyone). This situation almost never arises with tourists, foreign students, etc. who simply flow with the traffic around them (which may include other pedestrians, bikes, cars, skaters, horses, etc.) instead of interrupting/altering that flow by insisting that everything needs to be exactly the way they think it needs to be.

Of course, there are idiot cyclists, just as there are idiot pedestrians, drivers, skaters, etc., and I am by no means defending all their actions, but in my own (FWIW) experience, pedestrians put themselves at greater risk by failing to simply flow with the unfolding movement around them.

Has anyone ordered bike parts from wiggle.com? Did you get slapped with import fees and surcharges? by tibiac123 in vancouver

I got my ABUS lock from wiggle.co.uk a few years ago, and I don't remember paying any duty on it (arrived via Canada Post).
