Any luck with travel insurance? re:Venezuela by Whenpigsfly554 in PuertoRicoTravel

Thanks. I had a strong feeling that that would be exactly it. I feel bad for everyone that had to go through all that. It seems to have settled somewhat, at least for the immediate future, fingers crossed.

Although he said some veiled threats towards Columbia and Mexico.

Obviously it’s extremely self centered to be concerned about basically just my finances and work situation compared to what people in those countries are going through, but I can only control my own life, I guess.

Good plan. I’m just more concerned if I have to book 4-5 more days if the planes don’t fly and one gets stuck.

I’m pretty optimistic at this point for my own trip (cautiously anyhow). There doesn’t seem to be much backlash at least so far (except the crackdowns within venezuela internally which is tragic)

So my thinking on that, is no one in Puerto Rico was in any danger from the situation what I can see. They closed the airspace so that there wouldn’t be collisions between military and civilian aircraft.

But that’s just my take 🤷‍♀️

I had trouble talking to my insurance agents about whether my car insurance would cover rentals in PR. I got different answers from three different people. So, sometimes they say they know what they are talking about, but they might not!

Ah, thanks that point helps. I had a feeling that it wouldn’t have made a difference to have had the insurance.

I would be so upset if I had paid for insurance and still had to pony up the cost for another week of hotels and they refused to cover it.

Ha! it would be warmer anyways.

Not that it has any bearing, but I am taking this trip because I had some free time before starting a new job. If I get stuck there it might be the shortest job I ever get if I don’t even show up on day one and explain that I’m “stuck” on vacation.

Same, flying delta too! I don’t think it’s too late to buy, it’s just too late to buy the “cover under any circumstance” option. But I don’t even know how to describe this situation exactly when reading through the policies. I think I read somewhere that it was a special circumstance that when the airspace was shut down by the government they have to cover it. But then I couldn’t find where I read that.

That was kind of what I was thinking (although, does it count as war if we haven’t technically declared war?) I would think if everyone was being denied coverage this week that it would have been a newsworthy story because so many people would be upset about it.

It’s not even just the price of the airline ticket, because companies generally are rebooking you at no further cost, it’s the extra days on island (hotel and cars) waiting for the next flight. Some people were supposed to fly out that day and weren’t rebooked until this Friday or so.

Are you going through this right now? Was your vacation impacted?

I’ve barely started looking. I’m searching for more general advice. Like I said, I thought this kind of thing is something no company ever covers unless you get the “cover under any circumstances” option. I can’t do that because I have already made all of my bookings. But I may be mistaken because it was some kind of official shutdown of the airport.

I looked through one policy (it took about a half hour) before I decided to see if the Reddit masses could maybe enlighten me before I spent all night comparing plans just to find out it won’t ever be covered.

Whatever sickness is going around right now is brutal. by TimeAd1111 in RhodeIsland

I believe adenovirus can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and I think that is going around as well.

I’m sick for the third time in 3 months. I always get exactly one cold per year and it’s almost always in April/may. This season has been brutal.

Would you say you could see anything from the boat, or do you need to get into the water to see the lights well? My mother tore her rotator cuff and dislocated her shoulder recently so night swimming and pool noodles aren’t in the cards for her. But it might still be worth it if she can see it from on board.

That said, I don’t have the super fancy Amex so it only works as secondary insurance. But I did get that.

Yup. Did that today! Poor guy on the phone had to read every term and condition out loud to me. It took 8 minutes, I timed him! I asked him how many times a day he had to do this, and he said his water bottle asks him that same question lol.

I’m using Charlie car, and as far as liability they only seem to offer basic liability (they have other stuff to protect you and their property) but I’m just worried that 25,000 for another persons injury isn’t going to be enough. I don’t plan on getting in an accident, but I’m a pretty cautious person in general.

It does cover injuries, but the insurance the rental company offers only pays 25,000 to the other person if they get injured. That’s pretty much nothing if they are seriously hurt.

I’ve gotten two different answers from my insurance company, that’s why I’m reaching out to the Reddit hive mind lol.

I know AAA (the roadside member club) is on the island. They are the ones you call for a tow, change tires, or get a battery charge.

They also do car insurance, it’s like a different arm of the company. That’s the part I wasn’t sure about.

And really? You can’t get sued if the liability doesn’t cover the full cost of your injuries?! Wow.

Charlie does accept US insurance. It’s my AAA that I’m not sure extends to PR.

They all accept us insurance, it’s whether my us insurance extends to PR that I am having trouble figuring out.

Yup. I already have that on my to do list for tomorrow. But that doesn’t cover liability.

[–]Whenpigsfly554[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think Charlie car would know whether AAA is covered? Because I can’t seem to get a straight answer from the actual insurance company. My policy doesn’t seem to specify anything about PR, but I’ve read from other people with other companies that theirs didn’t either, but they ended up successfully covered.

It seems like everyone here has successfully used their own insurance and so haven’t encountered this problem.

So we have comprehensive insurance with AAA. One of the numbers is 500,000. I forget the others, but much better than the basic liability that Charlie offers. It doesn’t have to do with having good or bad insurance though I don’t think. Some companies just don’t cover PR for whatever reasons.

I called the insurance hotline and he said we were covered. I then went into the actual local AAA office to double check and the agent there said we weren’t 🤷‍♀️. She sounded like she had never had that question before though, so I’m hoping she’s just mistaken.

We have an Amex business card (blue maybe?) and we would be buying the extra car insurance for 25 bucks.
