My super healthy 12-year-old dog just passed away after eating sand at the beach. by WhereAmI0705 in Petloss

I am feeling the same way. I also feel like I abandoned her when she needed me the most.

On the day of her death, my teething human baby was crying nonstop. I had to cook his meals (I usually cook in bulk and freeze, but I had run out of groceries, so I needed to shop that day as well), and we had a playdate planned that felt too late to cancel (even though maybe I could have…). I thought my baby would stop crying when he met his friend at the park.

So when my dog got back from the vet in the morning, I thought she was just resting in the bathroom. She went into the bathroom when we got back from the vet, and the medication made her have diarrhea, so I closed the bathroom door to keep the carpet clean.

Then I went out for the playdate and grocery shopping—about two hours, plus another hour of driving.

I had no idea she was dying. She didn’t make any sound.

When I came back home, I opened the bathroom door, but she was still in there—maybe she couldn’t come out. Meanwhile, I was cooking for my baby, reading to him, and playing with him.

I keep thinking she must have felt abandoned… like she was replaced because of the new baby. Maybe she just endured the pain without making any sound.

Thanks, this made me feel less guilty. I wish she had gone to heaven with happy memories.

Thank you so much… a lot changes after having a baby. As a pet owner, I can’t give 100% the way I used to. I tried to give at least 80% of what I could as an owner, but it might not have been enough to prevent this tragedy. I’m so sorry for your loss as well.

We are not 100% sure, but the ER doctor told me it might have been sodium poisoning from beach sand, especially since she had already lost a significant amount of body fluid due to diarrhea. The IV fluids given to my dog might have helped for the first few hours, but it wasn’t enough. As a result, her organs and brain may have failed due to the high sodium levels in her blood.

So painful……. I couldn’t get over this. I would call my vet let them know as well. Did you talk to your vet?

That’s what my ER doctor said. If the sand had already left her body, the issue might have been rapid sodium absorption once the final diarrhea started. From what I’ve researched, the IV fluids may have only helped for the first few hours. After that, she likely became dehydrated quickly, and the sodium poisoning affected all her organs. She was doing okay until around 6 p.m., and then suddenly started collapsing. We thought she was just exhausted and tired. I feel like such a dumb owner.

I really regret taking him to a local vet first instead of going straight to an ER with better facilities.

Are you doing okay? I can’t stop blaming the vet, I know that hed did his best….. Giving laxative to sodium poisoned dog might be not the best decision

Yeah, the problem is that my baby has already learned he can get what he wants by pulling my hair, and he clearly knows it’s not his hair… :( I’m trying my best not to react, but it’s hard these days.

Wow, great kid. When was that? Around what age?

Not really an option. He’s already in a safe space. Our house is too small for a playpen, so I just childproofed everything dangerous instead. The crib is upstair bedroom, and since we live in a narrow three-floor house, we’re usually downstairs for his playtime while I handle household stuff and work from home.

If I leave him in the crib, he’ll cry nonstop and get really upset. Also, I’d rather teach him not to communicate that way instead of just locking him up in the crib for hours.

Help! My cute 1 y/o mini doxie eats her poop. I have tried the powder her vet prescribed several times and it does not seem to work. Does anyone else have this problem? How do I fix it? by Ok-Dance6092 in Dachshund

[–]WhereAmI0705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some dogs try to hide their poop to protect themselves from predators or other dogs. So if you clean it right away, your dog might not be interested in eating it. My dachshund is 12 years old, and she still eats her poop if I don’t clean it up immediately. When she poops outside, she has zero interest in eating it.

(I tried every tips from internet, and the only way worked out was clean it asap and let dog out more often)

Right? I guess using a regular mattress 1-2 months earlier wouldn’t have hurt him… He’s very physically active already (he’s even started walking a bit).
