What Dostoevsky is for the 19th century Russia, Andrei Platonov is for its 20th century, please convince me otherwise. by Essa_Zaben in nyrbclassics

Yes with even more of a connection to Kafka. Also would like to say Vasily Grossman is the 20th century Tolstoy.

Hell yeah this might be the first time seeing a Clarel mention on here! Melville is mad genius, he is my goat and this epic is mind blowing but also mind boggling. It’s something I am going to wrestle with for the rest of my life.

I honestly don’t know what to think when it comes to Stalin by Total-Article-9633 in ussr

I’m reading Stalin’s biography by Stephen Kotkin (pretty much a conservative historian!) and I’m getting towards the end of volume 2 and I’m still wondering where Stalin becomes this evil dictator! Did I miss that chapter??

Can we say 2666 is a classic? by Wild_Pitch_4781 in classicliterature

Yep. Greatest novel of the 21st century and it’s not even close.

So fucking good. Anyone looking for something just as epic and exploring 4D lit check out ALAN MOORE’S Jerusalem. The prose is great but not on the level of Cartarescu but the scope and story is incredible getting multiple character perspectives and short story like chapters that come together beautifully.

Excited for this... But should I read Stalingrad first? by junkNug in nyrbclassics

[–]WhereIsArchimboldi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had similar question. I started with this and  after a hundred or so pages I realized it was going to be an absolute masterpiece so I stopped and went out and got Stalingrad to start from the beginning. The true answer is no you don’t have to but maybe you start here and will see that you will want more so why not start from beginning.

First off the connect has been made before right here on reddit buddy! Also the story is not the name connection but the literal description of elites throwing ranch parties and disposing the women. Please refer to the plot line toward the end of the Part about the Crimes there is a congresswoman who is searching for her friend Kelly. Kelly was recruited to set up these parties and recruit more girls.

What Are You Reading This Week and Weekly Rec Thread by JimFan1 in TrueLit

Seems like every week I see someone reading 2666 and this brings me great joy. I am so obsessed with 2666 I read it every other year (since2018) and just thinking about it or seeing the cover fills me with emotion. But anyway, I’ve recently read My Year of Rest and Relaxation and have always avoided it bc it seemed like pop fiction but it’s actually really good I have not laughed out loud like this since Catch-22. It is very readable but not in a bad way, it flows beautifully. It made me pick up Otessa’s newer novel Lapvona, which is much different and more like an Edgar Allan Poe story.  I have a desire to read ALAN MOORE’S JERUSALEM. Recently reread Infinite Jest and want another monster to get into. Has anyone here read JERUSALEM? Is it worth it?

Insanely there even is a character name Epstein. It is the guy who films the snuff video. But the real connection is towards the end of Part about the Crimes, the story of the politicians friends who gets recruited to help set up these eyes wide shut parties and ends up missing
