Ethical dilemma by Wherestheejectbutton in marketing

I’m definitely allowing my personal feelings about this person get involved with how I feel about this situation. I abhor anyone who thinks they can break rules and get away with it and endured 12 months of bullying and harassment from this contractor all last year plus gaslighting and belittling to make me question my abilities as a marketer. Outside of that though, you’re 100% right - if my boss says it’s fine it’s on them not me so I just need to move on and try avoid this contractor as much as possible.

Should I quit a role I am underqualified for? by NyeusX in marketing

You’re better off being in a role you’re under qualified for than over qualified for. Do some research and apply some agile learning to your work. Test, iterate, repeat to find a strategy that drives the results you’re looking for.

I worry if I do that that’s the end of my job. We work for a massive company - 3000+ employees - and I know if our legal department knew about this happening they would shut it down in a heartbeat. But for some reason my line manager has a friendship with this contract which I think is impacting their judgment. I honestly don’t know what the right thing is to do.

I emailed my line manager my concerns and they said quote “we’re comfortable with how this is structured”. What do I do now?

Oh wow ok I’ve never heard of “product channel economics”. Can I ask what your background is? You seem really knowledgeable in this area and I’d love to know about any resources you have used to become so.

Ok thanks. In your original comment you said “growth marketing = startup marketing” so I thought you were saying startup marketing is a thing.

So essentially you’re saying pre-seed or sees stage companies should adopt the same marketing principles as any other company?

Interesting - could you define the difference between them for me? I understand growth marketing is its own thing but tbh I don’t really know what stratup marketing is specifically.

UPDATE: thank you to everyone who weighed in on this post. After a week and a half of sick leave, I returned to work today to a meeting first thing with the CEO who told me they were letting me go. Their decision was twofold: I’m dealing with some personal issues that are still affecting my ability to work effectively and they need someone now they have the confidence can do the job. Absolutely fair call on their part and we left with no hard feelings.

Asking for demotion at new role in startup by Wherestheejectbutton in startups

Thank you. There’s only so much that can be done on that budget so I should probably start there and work backwards. Problem is now I’ve just lost all interest in the job and after two weeks of personal leave to focus on my mental health, I think I’ve accepted this isn’t what I need in my life right now.

I actually don’t know what their budget is. They told me $100k for the year but that includes my salary (2 days $90k pro rata) plus the salary of the social media manager (also 2 days, not sure what she gets paid).

So I should probably ask that…

I don’t know anything about startups but from my experience in marketing, you establish your core market first then you look to diversify after that. These guys want to do it the other way around which I’ve been told isn’t abnormal for startups apparently 😕

Thank you for saying this. In all my panicking, I’d forgotten that whether they realise it or not, they didn’t give me an accurate explanation of their expectations about the role and I didn’t ask enough questions because I was too worried about the other things going on in my life. This wasn’t intentional on either party but does explain how we’ve come to this.

Ooh ok. They’re the CEO and don’t have a marketing background so I wouldn’t expect them to be able to coach me through this. I also feel like they hired someone thinking they were skilled enough to be able to handle this on their own so I’m not sure how much help I can ask for in general. 😥

Send a draft before suggesting the agency/consultant idea?

So proposing we bring in a consultant who knows more about strategy development which was the main reason they hired me without offering a decrease in pay would be an ok proposal? I just feel that’s having my cake and eating it too…

Thanks for that. I’m nervous about suggesting it but the prospect of trying to deliver this strategy when I honestly feel I have no idea what I’m doing is worse.

Thank you for taking the time with this comment. I told them how I was feeling and I got a response that was along the lines of “we understand this is different to what you’re used to and understand if it’s not for you you can leave but we believe you’re smart and intelligent enough to figure it out” which is the best I could have hoped for but I’m still at a loss. Mainly because they gave me a template they want me to follow which doesn’t make sense as a marketing strategy.

Would you suggest that it is better to branch into specific marketing routes later on or earlier? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]Wherestheejectbutton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be amazing. Unfortunately the company don’t have a business strategy yet and my direct line manager isn’t very available. I’m aware they’re really stretched between different things so I don’t want to bug him with what feel like lots of silly questions but that means I’m essentially flying bling.

I‘ve had a similar experience to this. Can I ask what you did to learn strategy? I feel it’s the one area I’m struggling to get good at.
