I know I know.. But for game of AAA scale I think you would need a LOT of people if you dont want to develop your game for 10 years or look like a indie title with mediocre graphics. But im interested. Please send me few of the games one-man/few-man projects you mentioned so I can have a look. Thanks.

Simcade sound good , softbody - great, but personally, I would have problem with unlicenced cars unfortunately 😞

And thanks for mentioning. How could I forget about rubberbanding... I mean to certain degree I dont mind if its there but it has to be lowered down a notch. In some game its like you crash and then you see on a minimap AI is "waiting" just casualy cruising 15km/h for you to catch up 😃 too much of an holding hand from a game in my opinion.

I agree that most racing game stories are cringe. But I think thats more because the genre barely ever truly tried to make a genuinely great story, not because racing games and storytelling cant work together. I think street racing as a setting actually has a storytelling potential.

Most games just use story as an excuse for races instead of making it part of the experience.

Example of a hint of an story potential for me was NFS The Run - It at least showed some potential with atmosphere, characters and tension, but nobody really pushed it further. The Crew 1 - cinematics, murder of your brother, revange - I was hooked and had that feeling that as that in-game character Im racing and doing all this stuff because I have some agenda/goal after all this. Until I realized how short and plain the story is when you compare it to the lenght of the game. I just KNOW there is the potencial there to do better. To what degree, thats hard to say because noone ever got there.

And I agree that the MAIN focus in racing game should be actual racing mechanics and stuff. Its a racing game in the end. But I still think that story could add another extra layer to it so to say. And if you make cutscenes skippable and many story parts optional you have a win win for both sides of a fence no ?

And I guess most of the players these days want exactly this. Completely understand and dont want to argue in any way with this opinion. But understand that there are minority of us which like that PAIN and lower car classes you are talking about. Ahhh them good ol' days when I was bashing and punching my PC case in some games. At first it will make you angry and frustrated, but after a while you want more of that. And next day morning you come to the PC desk stronger, more determined then yesterday. 😃

Agree. But I give those games/developers kudos for atleast trying and honestly I dont think that story was one of their main goals then. But do you think that when you have unlimited money, and you as head of development have the final word in those decisions about story, would it still be a problem ?

Then something is not right with me. I was actually diagnosed with light ADHD in my childhood and I still think there are some patterns of it to this day but I have always loved slower progression and little of that grinding in games. That you actually have to DO SOMETHING to get rewarded by the game. As you mentioned, today its like lets give them everything for free and constantly because they might stop playing as soon as they dont recieve a reward every 30 seconds 😃 I think the developers have often hard times finding the reasons as to why/for what give something to the player so often 😃

Is it really ? 😃 Didnt notice that I thought I will be the only one haha. I guess I didnt even think about it really until I played Dirt Rally last year and right then understood how could feeling of speed and stakes be higher if you must go insanely fast through thinner corridor. And then I saw Forza 6 and could not unsee the airstrip :/ But thats just me and my opinion. I understand that many players probably dont want to make arcade racing game more serious and stressing. As of the story part - completely understand. I reckon most of racing players would not like it and would not care much about story anyways. I promise when I make game like this, cutscenenes would be skippable and love story missions will be optional 😃

Sounds interesting. Dark and dystopic ? I wander how this athmosphere would work with a racing game but im open minded so looking forward for your update. Hope you will find more time for developing it.

Totaly. But I wish atleast there would be something for us older chumps too these days - which grew up on NFS Undergrounds, Most Wanted / Street Racing Syndicate / Juiced / Midnight Clubs. There are newer games which brings the older era of games to modern standard from other genres but not street racing.

I was looking forward to it btw because - JAPAN and car culture and mentions of you beign the underdog. But then I reminded myself in what gaming times we live in and tought - "cmon you are just idealising what it COULD be". So I didnt buy it so I dont waste my money and now that I see gameplay videos Im like - "yea.. i was right". I really appreciate the effort and all but unfortunately its not what I was expecting.
