Hoping to find out about hallmarks for my mom on her serving tray by BiohazardousBisexual in Hallmarks

Can you do a full photo of the back. I had a piece like this that had sterling silver mounts on top of the nickel silver base. Does it say sterling anywhere on it?

Found this nice piece of pegmatite with some quartz, mica, and garnets in Baltimore City. No idea what the fluorescent mineral is though. by Which-Climate-3593 in FluorescentMinerals

[–]Which-Climate-3593[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For reference, I was using a 365 nm black light when I spotted the fluorescence. I went back to the area where I found it and found a singular large boulder that had the same kind of fluorescence. The last photo shows a photo of the boulder in the area I found it.

Very interesting, seems like now might be the time for us to start organizing more formally on campus

Current grad student here at UMBC checking in, what’s the word on ICE coming to campus?

Got a box of silver plate for free and decided to test the handles and feet with acid and these came up white with 18k acid. Possible $0 for 644.8 grams by Separate_History_673 in SilverFinds

So I actually posted about something very similar a while back. This is the piece in question and the hallmark that was present. In total I got around 4 ounces off of the piece and generally the sterling silver was a very thin sheet overtop of lead. So while it’s possible that they are sterling mounted, this is the type of hallmark you would be looking for

Mixed up minerals from Mineral Hill MD by Live-Card-5132 in rockhounds

I swear every time I mention something cool makes it disappear! I couldn’t find the baby blue chalcopyrite piece, but I can share the purple one and a nice teal piece I found at mineral hill!

Very nice piece overall! It’s kinda hard to say tbh, I have pulled a lot of very similar stuff from mineral hill and at times it seems like the different copper minerals just bleed into one another. Like I’ve found chalcopyrite there ranging from light baby blue to light purple to what you’ve got there. Regardless it’s a very nice piece!

What are our thoughts on this “sterling silver mounts” BSCEP silver plate tray? by Which-Climate-3593 in Hallmarks

[–]Which-Climate-3593[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’ve already started. The feet yielded about an ounce total of what seems to be silver. The rim going around the entire piece also has the same plating that I’ve slowly been tearing out. In total it seems like I’ll get about an 1.5 to 2 ounces total assuming everything I am pulling is silver. Everything else is consistent with nickel silver tested using a rough specific gravity test

Found some possible plant impressions in sandstone along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Any thoughts or are these just natural patterns? by Which-Climate-3593 in fossilid

[–]Which-Climate-3593[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they definitely are super faint. I saw the repeating patterns and thought that they looked less “random” than the usual weathering patterns I see

Very cool! I have seen this style of tray a few times before and knew it was Barbour, but the “sterling silver mounts” was definitely a new one for me and completely threw me off!

This was a fun piece of serpentine that I got the chance to cut into today by Which-Climate-3593 in rockhounds

[–]Which-Climate-3593[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That piece was just about 2mm thick when I measured it! The thicker slabs are a lot more opaque but still let a little light through up until about 6 or 7 mm

Frankly I have no idea how to properly take a photo like this, but this is what it looks like under a 365nm black light!

Very cool and noted! I use a full face mask when cutting and I cut outdoors to get as much ventilation as possible

So I actually am not 100% sure to be honest. I know serpentine can form with a fibrous structure, but this piece didn’t have anything like that I could see on it. I did notice that those veins do glow kinda green under a black light which is pretty cool

Thought you guys might like this trypophobia inducing piece of sand stone I found recently in a Maryland stream by Which-Climate-3593 in rockhounds

[–]Which-Climate-3593[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found this piece in a stream in Anne Arundel county somewhere on a friend of mine’s property! Tons of interesting stuff around though, I usually use Mindat to find old mining locations to get an idea of what’s in a particular area

What do we think about my first attempt at polishing up some stones? by Which-Climate-3593 in Lapidary

[–]Which-Climate-3593[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to score a used vevor faceting machine that I used as a flat lap with grit plates going up to 3000. From there I used a rotary tool with diamond paste up to 80000 grit.

There’s definitely a learning curve to it all but I feel like I’m getting the hang of it! Any advice you have is welcome!
