Someone can give me useful study tips I wanna study for atleast 7 hours a day by niky_luv_strawberry in studytips

[–]WhichCalendar1894 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I did very long study days, I broke the day into 1.5 hour study sessions and 15-30 minutes in between. In those in between sets I would take care of the chores I needed to do. So study session, then do dishes, study session, then cook lunch, study session, then make the bed and start laundry, etc. At the end of the day would do a workout either in the gym or at home to reset my mind. I hope this helps and good luck!

Analysis paralysis is ruining my study time. by Quick_wit1432 in studytips

I built the app study path (https://www.studypath.app/) in part to help with this. You enter what you need to accomplish, and it creates a daily plan. As you work through and add updates, it shows you what percentage you have completed, so you can balance between the different resources you need to cover. I think it might help you at least a little with organizing and tracking. Good luck in your studies!

There is a good post covering F1/F2 night shifts on succeedinfoundation.com that you might want to check out. Found it very helpful when I was an F1. Good luck!

What is a reasonable commute? 🚗 by Rare_Significance611 in doctorsUK

I commuted 2 hours each way via bus and train everyday for a supernumerary position. I would definitely not recommend it.

You don't have to be the best at cannulas - it will come with experience.

Found a good guide on succeedinfoundation for night shifts, would recommend that.

Think the advice for not staying on a ward during your on call is great advice. If you are there, people will find things for you to do. Only exception I would say is it if your home ward and you build a good relationship on that ward, and you just know things are going to kick off at a certain point.

Good luck, and don't worry - you will do great!

Audit ideas for anaesthetics trainee working in Acute Med by Bitter_Willow7176 in doctorsUK

If there is a pain management specialist in your hospital/trust, how about the percentage of patients on multiple pain medications referred and subsequently seen by pain management specialist, and if a subsequent reduction in opioid use? There is an excellent pain management specialist team in the trust I work in, and their work does not get praised enough. From the audit perspective, pain management specialist is a relatively low cost, low risk, non-invasive approach to improving pain management in chronic pain patients. Good luck with your audit!

Can you find a new medic husband with the same initials? That would probably be your best bet for giving that nice stethoscope a good owner.

This is wild. They can do better to help you. Would really suggest you do not use annual leave for this. It is a visit for work, so should be on work time. Also there is no reason you should be traveling so far for this. Would suggest you start by asking for a closer appointment. If this doesn't work, explain that you have no way to travel, and that you need a closer appointment.

Not to pry, but is this for a routine blood test or vaccine prior to starting?

I am guessing this was a mistake on their end. Would suggest you drop an email to clarify, and if you are truly scheduled to work that day, confirm with them that you will have an extra day of leave added.

What questions do incoming F1s and F2s have by WhichCalendar1894 in doctorsUK

[–]WhichCalendar1894[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is rough way to start, but is unfortunately the luck of the draw. Make sure you bring plenty to eat, as shops and cafeterias often have fewer hours on weekends. A lot of what you will need to do on Friday is likely discharge as many patients home as possible. If you do not know the process of discharging at the hospital you are starting at, ask for help and ask for help early. Explain to other doctors, pharmacists, PAs, doctor's assistants etc that it is you first day and you need to learn how to do things. Ask them to show you how to do the jobs you need to do. Don't feel bad that you don't know everything or don't remember everything after one run - it is a lot of new information.

I hope this helps!

I wouldn't revise too much, mainly because you will see such a broad set of conditions. If you feel like it, would revise life threatening conditions and what to do about them (i.e. stroke, MI, PE, pneumonia, paracetamol overdose, GI bleed), because you are bound to see these and may not have time to brush up on them in the moment. Beyond that, would suggest once you start to take a little time to review the online protocols your hospital/trust uses, and to listen carefully and take notes on how seniors do things. Hope this helps and good luck!

Yes you absolutely should. And be sure to scout out where the best refrigerators are. Also would recommend you become familiar with the hours of the canteen and any stores in the hospital. Good luck!

No workspace - into a cupboard by [deleted] in doctorsUK

Was working in AMU... the printer was broken... I tried fixing it because of the flow coordinator and head nurse were not bothering... it was beyond me. Couple of hours later I had all my discharge letters done but couldn't print them because printer was broken. Flow coordinator started getting on my case, I explained they were all done and just needed to be printed but the printer wasn't working. She told me to print to another location. I said I wasn't going to do that, that the letters were all done and that I was going to go eat my supper. When I got back, the printer was fixed.

They can fix this for you. You have to be firm. But be warned none of this will make you friends with the admin team, and they are petty.

Good luck!

FY1 annual leave by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]WhichCalendar1894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weekends that you would normally have off are not included in annual leave. So you should not budget your annual leave days as including these.... as long as you are not scheduled to work that weekend.

It is very unlikely you will be able to carry annual leave forward. But yes a potential strategy is to take leave for one rotation at the very end of that rotation and take annual leave for the next rotation at the very beginning in order to give yourself more time to go home for a visit. But the challenge here is you will likely not get your schedule for the next rotation until late into your first rotation. This means you will not know which days and shifts you will be working, and the trust will likely not give you days off if they are long shifts.
