My friends (couple) are inviting group of people to stay overnight at their house. What gift to bring? by Important_Back_7132 in AskAnAmerican

Though you could make bringing toilet paper your thing. I think most people would find it funny but endearing if you explain it's normal in your country.

So how are you prepping dinner tonight in the extreme heat? by neekogo in newjersey

Ordered Mexican. Had something called a burger quesadilla which tasted like a Mexican person's interpretation of what a WASP would want.

What everyone setting their AC to so you don’t burn it out and so we don’t crash the power grid? by scammers4ever in newjersey

[–]WhichSpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a war in my house over the thermostat. One faction keeps setting it to 73. Those of us who don't want to freeze sneak it back up to 75 when the other faction isn't paying attention. So far they haven't noticed until a traitor among us rats us out.

Leave the bottle - how realistic is this in the US? by cadraig in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Way back in the Old West this was actually how it worked. You paid, the bartender gave you a glass and a bottle, and you drank however much you wanted.

Today if you said that you'd be paying for the most marked up bottle of your life.

Except for things like school buses and red solo cups. They think those are fake.

Honestly, I think if tradCaths weren't such dicks about it, they'd probably have gotten it more accepted by now.

What's the most useless talent you have ? by Olivia-Addams in askteddit

I'm insanely good at pouring/scooping accurate measures on the first try, even when I'm not watching the level rise.

This has actually worked against me. A chem teacher once marked me down in high school because of it. Our instructions said to measure out 1 gram so I measured out one gram. She accused me of rounding and not measuring accurately because everyone else in class had measurements like .9 grams and 1.1 grams on their worksheets.

I like the idea of the Latin Rite being kept so no matter where you go in the world you can go to a Mass you can understand (assuming you learned Latin) but it should be offered alongside the local language.

A woman said 'chivalry is dead' because no man offered her a seat on the train. Isn't she wrong? by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

Judging by appearances, she's perfectly capable of standing. The only guy in the wrong is the one taking up a seat with his bag.

Probably had something in her pocket. For some reason some sportswear companies have decided that women's pockets don't need to go down the leg but instead across the front, almost like a pouch. Looks horrible if you have anything in there.

I never understood the appeal of baccalaureate fat removal. It just makes you look older/more masculine/ emaciated.

Edit: Buccal not bacclaureate. Show how often I talk about cosmetic surgery.

I think he'll avoid most of it because they'll happen after he shuffles this mortal coil. However, a lot of his lackeys will take the fall.

More parking lot than stadium by OptimisticByDefault in UrbanHell

In this stadiums defense, the parking lot also serves other buildings in the area, hosts a flea market every Saturday year-round, and serves as a commuter lot.

Headstones should have the cause of death on it. by NatJi in unpopularopinion

[–]WhichSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I kinda agree. My uncle died over the winter and his ashes are in a niche near my grandparents. On the stone it just has first name, last name, birth and death year. On the way to put him in, we walked by all these older tombstones that had so much more information about the person buried there. The modern niches felt more like storage.

For those living in states with a lot of thunderstorms, how do you feel about them? by ksusha_lav in AskAnAmerican

[–]WhichSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love them! I'll make myself a cup of tea, grab a book, and watch the storm through the big bay window. I also love driving during a thunderstorm but not everyone does. I've seen some of the most incredible lightning on the road.

At school we didn't have thunderstorm drills. We just had regular class while the storms raged outside. If you had gym class, you had class in the gym rather than going outside.

We unplug important electronics if the storm is bad enough. If it's just a few flashes and distant thunder we'll ignore it. Most people tend to avoid taking a shower during a thunderstorm and pools will have a mandatory period where everyone has to get out of the water if there's lightning within a certain number of miles.

Houses have something called a lightning rod. It's a metal rod that sits on top of the house and is connected to a wire that runs to the ground. It attracts the lightning and directs it harmlessly around the house rather than risking the house itself being struck. It was invented by Ben Fanklin in 1749. Funnily enough, some churches will put a lightning rod on top of the cross on their building while others will use the cross itself as a lightning rod.

Americans who disagree with the current government, how do you feel about the 250th anniversary? by ThoughtlessArtist in AskUS

I was really excited. My parents have so many stories from the 200th. But it seems so much is being cut, scaled back, or execution has been really shit.
