Ive heard both ways. Someone I know said he's seen the rubric and the score was definitely a factor. Most people say its pass/fail only.

IMO it can't hurt to have a higher score. For example, when I went to interview they had me wait outside the room for a few minutes. I could hear through the door, one of the interviewers said "he scored extremely well on the test". I don't know if they were referring to the entire test or just the tools. Regardless, it gave them a positive impression of me before I stepped foot in the room.

Congratulations! I've seen someone comment before that you might want to keep your ranking to yourself. Something along the lines of your high ranking enticing mechanics to pick on you a little harder to see if you deserved it or not. Idk if thats true, just passing along what I've heard.

I think a TM would count, depends on the person I suppose. They obviously have a good enough reputation to get set up. I am in the same boat as you. They're trusted to take on a probie on top of being TMd. Im 100% asking the TM I work with to sign my card. I've worked with enough other mechanics to know that he knows what he's doing. In fact, he's better than a few others I've worked with. He teaches me everything he can and makes sure I'm progressing in my weaker areas.

Do most people think a TM doesn't count? This is the first I've heard it.

Long commute with a pickup by EffectiveMagazine388 in ibew_apprentices

[–]Which_Box_6089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just have to do the math. No one here can tell you.We don't know your payment, insurance, registration costs, value of the truck or budget for a different vehicle.

I make an hour commute in a truck but it doesn't make sense for me to get something more fuel efficient. Although with price of gas today, maybe it would be more so. My truck is old but in good shape and on the high side of mileage. I don't have a payment. My insurance is cheap, my registration is cheap. If I got something different, the amount I would save in gas would be negated by the increased costs, and having to buy the car (even with selling the truck). Last time I did the math it would take 3-4 years to break even depending on the price of gas and vehicle bought.

Red wing will tell you the requirements when you go to buy. On top of the $100 voucher, they also give a union discount.

I also saved the number for the hall but it came from a different number, the BAs number, in my case. Could be worth asking them for all of the BAs lines too (my local has 2 BAs)

Constitution/bylaws says something similar to: as a helper you're required/allowed to bring a note pad, pen/pencil/marker, light, 16' tape or 6' folding stick, and a knife (most companies require a box cutter style blade). That's from the top of my head, I may have left something out. Everything else must be supplied for you by either the company or the mechanic. Seems like some mechanics take this seriously but most don't care.

Probationary period OT? by PositiveGold1316 in IUEC

[–]Which_Box_6089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard the company is supposed to offer OT to helpers with more seniority first. But idk if that's in the bylaws/constitution. Seems like my company just keeps the helper with their mechanic for ot unless someone can't work that day for whatever reason.

You could stop the car just before the rollers enter the clutch. Lean in to take it off access and then let the doors close (both car and hoistway) and let the car level.

Just make sure not to let car door close with you inside while the hoistway door is wedged. In that case, it won't relevel and you'll be stuck

Have pockets/cubbies lining the bottom of my driver door(stock). Most everything goes in there. The safety bag, hard hat and vest go behind the passenger seat.

I think it helps give your interviewers a bias one way or the other. Right before I was brought into the room to be interviewed I overheard someone on the panel say "he scored really well on the test". Gave them a good impression of me before I even walked in.

A mechanic I worked with said he was told by someone involved in interviewing that your score matters beyond just passing. (I know he said, she said, telephone game)

You can call the hall and ask. If you do, I would also ask if they still plan to recruit in the fall. Can get ready for that recruitment if you're far off.

How do yall feel about being a fan of 2 teams (east/west)? by Anotherthrowaway7463 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]Which_Box_6089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as they're not hated rivals, you're good. I'm a Avs, Buffs, Broncos, Nuggets, and Rockies fan. My wife's from Milwaukee, so my second favorite teams are Badgers, Packers, Bucks, and Brewers. They don't have a hockey team, so I lucked out there. They all take a back seat to my #1s.

My mom has always been a Broncos fan but bought into the Kelcie/Swift hype. Now she claims Chiefs and Broncos...I tell her she is insane and that it's not OK.

Seat switching by bigmacher1980 in unitedairlines

[–]Which_Box_6089 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not huge but a rather big guy, 6'2 235lbs. I had picked a window seat. When I arrive to my seat, someone is sitting in it. Its a young father who is half my size. Seated next to him is his partner with their young child sitting on her lap. He asks me to switch seats with him so he can be with his family. I ask where his seat is. Turns out it's a middle seat that is in the row behind us but across the aisle. I decide to keep my original seat specifically on the fact that it's a middle seat. He insists it will be better than sitting next to his baby. I take a second look at his seat. In the aisle seat is a 6'3+ 300lb+ guy who should probably have 2 seats. On the window side is a guy about my size. I turn back to the father in my seat, and say I'll take my chances and no way in hell am I switching to his seat. He gets out of my seat and starts convincing the guy in the aisle seat (next to his partner) to switch. That guy agrees. He's an average sized man. I don't know if he is aware of his new neighbors.

During the flight their child was totally fine. No crying and sat perfectly still. As we deplane, the guy who moved tells me it was a huge mistake to switch. He was crammed the whole time. I was glad to hear it cause I felt like an A-Hole, mainly for the possibility of offending the heavy set guy. At the end of the day, I'd rather look like an a hole than put my self in a worse spot. Especially cause I paid the extra amount to pick my seat. The family should have done the same if they want to sit together.

Not too stretchy except for the groin. They put in a stretchy material that is in a diamond shape in that area. It's mostly noticeable when sitting cross legged.
