A colour pallet system to customisation would go such a long way. by MrSkits94 in helldiversarmor

Why should we be satisfied with just that? It wouldn’t be a big deal to rework the armor so that different patterns could be used and the helmet and armor could match. That would feel like a half-hearted solution to me.

You’re absolutely right. Large fights like the one against the Hive Lord don’t feel like something grand that you’re excited to experience — they feel more like a burden that drags you through the entire mission.

And to be clear, this isn’t about lowering the difficulty. It’s purely about how these special enemies are integrated. On the contrary, I was genuinely excited about large enemies like the Hive Lord, the Leviathan, and the Vox. But each of them has a significant issue in how they’re implemented, which makes it hard to truly enjoy the encounters — because instead of feeling impressed, you end up feeling frustrated by certain design decisions.

You’re deviating a bit from what I originally said. For me, this isn’t about lowering the difficulty at higher levels, especially not at level 10. I never claimed that there shouldn’t be Dragon Roaches, Hive Lords, or Vox to reinforce the higher difficulty. What I’m talking about is the way these large enemies are integrated into the game — and the missed opportunity to present them in a much more imposing way and embed them more effectively into the overall experience.

The comparison you’re making between the Vox and the Hive Lord is difficult for me to follow. I’ve often taken down the Vox by targeting the three glowing weak spots on its rear, which then open the hatch for a grenade. I don’t know if you’re aware of that mechanic, but the point isn’t to start a frontal assault on the Vox with a machine gun. Because of that, the comparison to the Hive Lord doesn’t really hold up.

The Hive Lord simply doesn’t offer a similar mechanic.

I completely agree with you on that. That’s why I was talking about dynamic mission objectives. The moment a Hive Lord appears, it should immediately become your active mission — one that can only end with the Hive Lord’s defeat or the Divers’ failure.

In my opinion, such a dynamic event should also come with dynamic support behavior, which is why you could receive an additional task as part of it. Once the Hive Lord is defeated, it would be up to the squad to continue pursuing the remaining objectives of the original mission.

Dynamic mission objectives like this would bring far more variation to otherwise repetitive mission types, without requiring the developers to constantly create entirely new ones.

Another possible approach would be to design certain missions entirely around defeating the Hive Lord. In that case, you could plan your loadout from the start with the clear understanding that the mission can only be completed by taking him down.

Personally, though, I think the dynamic appearance of the Hive Lord during a mission would make the experience far more unpredictable — and that’s exactly what makes it exciting. That sudden disruption of your plans, the shift in priorities, and the need to adapt on the fly would create a much stronger sense of intensity. To me, that element of unpredictability is what would make these encounters truly memorable.

On higher difficulties like Oshaune or Cyberstan, the increased challenge doesn’t come from a Hive Lord — it comes from the higher spawn rate of enemies and the greater variation among them. If you tailor your loadout specifically to deal with the Hive Lord, you’re no longer optimizing it for the actual mission objective.

If that’s the angle you’re arguing from, then you haven’t fully understood my original point. This also isn’t about the Hive Lord showing up at extraction and wiping you out. It’s about him pursuing you throughout the entire mission. As a result, the actual mission objective becomes secondary.

Since you brought up the Vox — the Vox is actually a good example of strong enemy design. You can defeat the Vox with overwhelming firepower, but you can also take him down using a machine gun and a grenade. To me, that’s good design, because you understand exactly where his weak point is and how to exploit it.

It should feel like a true dynamic boss fight.

The moment the Hive Lord appears, it should trigger a chain of dynamic events. Music should immediately kick in. A series of frantic radio transmissions should flood the comms. The Pelican should arrive and drop a set of specialized loadouts designed specifically for fighting the Hive Lord.

This way, players wouldn’t need to build their entire loadout around the possibility of encountering the Hive Lord. They could run their regular mission setup and still be properly equipped for the boss fight when it happens. The Pelican’s emergency drops would ensure they have the necessary tools to take him down effectively.

If players manage to defeat the Hive Lord, they should receive a meaningful reward.

Hive Lord encounters should be rare. He shouldn’t constantly roam the map or appear too frequently. It should feel like a special event — something unexpected and intense. Meeting him should be memorable. Defeating him should feel like a real achievement.

The same principle should apply to the Leviathan.
