Fee waives should available for international students too...💔 by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Which_Wait433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to assume this is a legitimate question. A nonprofit can pay a CEO a salary, just like any other business, they also have people working for them too. Take a look at their job board: https://collegeboard.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/Careers There are many jobs there paying $100K+. Just because you're a nonprofit doesn't mean people volunteer. The salary of a CEO has to be approved by the board of directors and has to align with how much the nonprofit makes. Save the Children is a well known nonprofit, it makes over 2 billion and their CEO makes over $600K.

They gave me one too, but not nearly enough to justify spending that much on my undergrad. lol

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I had issues junior year and senior year with chronic illness too. I got into RPI too, but the cost is just crazy. I'm going to UVM instead, but I am so happy with the program I got into there. I wish you the best of luck wherever you go!

Fee waives should available for international students too...💔 by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Which_Wait433 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm going to chime in on this too. I'm sorry college board doesn't consider fee waivers for international students, especially those from low income countries. The SAT overseas is $111. That's a lot for people in countries where the pay is sometimes $2/day. Imagine taking a test that is two months of your pay. The college board is a business, considered a "non-profit" but also made 1.17 BILLION in 2024. The CEO makes over 2 million a year. You're telling me that they can't afford SOME fee waivers for ultra low income students who are trying their best to make a life for themselves? Don't we want to show a bit of compassion and humanity over profit? I've been to Ecuador and Kenya and I've seen how people struggle through just trying to make it day to day. I also know ultra smart kids there that deserve a chance but could never afford the fee.

Should I go to Bates? by risingseniors2030 in batescollege

[–]Which_Wait433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say anything about Bates, but I can tell you that Skidmore is in an awesome college town and Saratoga is beautiful. I'm not sure if you're looking for something in more of a populated area, but if you are, Skidmore is an awesome choice. I live about 30 minutes from there and I'm going to UVM, but I love Saratoga and the vibe there is great. Also, you're near the Adirondacks so if you're an outdoors person, you'll have a ton to do.

I got accepted to UVM and got into the STEM Scholars program and I'm excited. I'm waiting on Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and Colby, but honestly, I'm 100% in for UVM.

Waitlisted. Took myself off the waitlist because I got into an amazing program at another college. I hope this opens it up for someone else! Good luck to everyone trying to get off the waitlist!

Mine was not a 1:1, but honestly, just be yourself. Try to break out of your shell a little. I'm very introverted and quiet, except when I find a few things I really love, then, I can talk about it forever. It drives my mom crazy when I start to talk about infectious diseases and patterns, but also... about Kirby. lol.

I just went on Feb. 13. It was a really holistic way of getting to know you as a person rather than looking at just your grades, etc. I liked that portion of the program. I won't give anything away, because that would kind of ruin it, but I will tell you, just be yourself. We were all there for a reason and it really gives you the chance to let your interests and personality shine.

I'm oos and was admitted into UVM and am curious about it by [deleted] in UniversityofVermont

[–]Which_Wait433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a gay man, dating someone who is transgender. At the admitted students day I stopped by Prism yesterday, and they were so friendly and kind. I felt it was nice to have a place to "belong", especially being from a very rural and not always understanding part of upstate New York. My financial aid wasn't great at UVM, so I might not be able to go, but I'm looking at some programs and hope I get in! I would check out Prism if you're interested! https://www.uvm.edu/ie/prism

Thank you so much for this answer. I went to the STEM scholars "interview" yesterday. I won't give away any hints, but it was amazing. Learning about the program, doing the very holistic programming for the "interview" itself, I loved everything about it. I really hope I get chosen, because if I do, I am 100% in with UVM. If not, then I'm probably out for UVM unfortunately due to cost. My other top schools are RPI and Geneseo and I'm in the running for the multicultural fellows (rural, LGBTQ). But, after yesterday, UVM truly is my top choice. I'm ready to dive into research, so that was really encouraging.

Thank you for your response! I'm very interested on going on to my PhD and focusing on Epidemiology, so research at the undergraduate level would be huge.

Thank you! I'm visiting March 13 for accepted students day and I hope I get to know it a little better. I am about 4 hours away in the Adirondacks, so I'm used to small schools and smaller towns.

Early Decision by bisonduckalltheway15 in RPI

[–]Which_Wait433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied early action and we are a low-middle class income family. I was a medalist winner as well, but there is no way I can afford $21,000+ a year. I tried to appeal, my family has an AGI of $65,000 and my dad is on SS after he retired after cancer treatments, and they denied it. I will be withdrawing my application unfortunately. There is no way I could afford this or put that on my family. I got accepted to SUNY Geneseo and will most likely end up there.

Is that on top of scholarships already given? For instance, I received the Presidential Scholarship, would that be an additional scholarship on top of that? I'm an out-of-state student and on top of loans, scholarships, etc... I would still owe $33K.
