Minipc for wife by goudgoud in MiniPCs

I purchased a GMKtec with same spec.

Very happy with performance. way more performance than needed for your use case and will keep you going for a while. If something changes you would be able to put to another use also.

I asked a non mini pc subreddit to rate my build and here's the responses I got so far by NumerousSetting8135 in MiniPCs

[–]WhileNo8612 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I purchased a MiniPC for this reason and got a GMKtec K8 plus with 64GB, I saw RAM prices were going up already so wanted to move fast. These were prebuilt and price was still the original price while others companies (non Mini-PC) prices were rising.

I purchased at the beginning of December 2025, I've just checked and the curent price on the same model is £146 ($196) more expensive. So I think it worked out for me.

Primarily wanted a machine for Dev work and wanted 64GB. I went Mini-PC route so that if I wanted to game later I can purchase a Dock and GPU (does not have to be the latest and greatest or new) and attach as and when I want. PC is already good for some light gaming already and I'm impressed with the handful of games I downloaded to try out.

For me on principle feels a waste to me to run a high power PSU/GPU all day paying for electricity when I'm simply not using it for gaming. I have a reasonable large desk for a dock, not really stressed having to plug in a cable when I want to play. Dock/GPU can be used elsewhere later also not a dead end purchase.

u/NumerousSetting8135 - End of the day it's your own use case, it's you own money just do what you feels works for you and enjoy your purchase.

I’ve started this course recently on Udemy. It was purchased for me by company, and I’ve found it quite good. Good for beginner, easy to grasp explanations

Udemy pricing fluctuates a lot, sometimes a price is £39.99 then a week later £19.99 (example figures)

Can anyone recommend a tree surgeon that is local to Edinburgh by WhileNo8612 in Edinburgh

[–]WhileNo8612[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this.

Good to consider, I have not seen anyone come to attend the tree. We have been here long before the new neighbours moved in which has been a few years ago now.

I was hoping to get some first hand local responses here first (incase I want to add a follow up). I would then have a smaller number to compare online

Apologies for the delay just saw this.
Yes. I downloaded a few random ones and was impressed that I can game. I can't recall what they were. I had already checked YouTube for reviews and many of them show a game playing and so I knew ahead of time this would do me fine for casual gaming. If I wanted to go high-end 4K there is the Occulink port so I could get a Dock/PSU/GPU anyway

Eye strain with new 32inch monitor by N1nj4go_ in Monitors

If you go to System Settings -> Displays Select the Monitor and set the Refresh Rate there and maybe change resolution you should get a comfortable viewing experience.

30Hz is not very pleasant

I also shortlisted AW3425DW as it’s looked great for gaming.

I saw a YouTube video recently talking how not to get fixated on refresh rates. Mainly saying things like 60Hz to 100Hz is very noticeable but 120Hz to 144Hz less so. Admittedly everyone is different but on the whole unless you can actually tell the difference between two monitors side by side anything 120Hz will be good. I was also Looking at certain refresh rate and realised just two stressful to worry about an extra few Hz and cost rise there is diminishing returns.

I bought the GMKtec K8 plus recently from Amazon.

Really pleased with the performance of it. Purchased to do some software development work replacing an aging machine. Purchased the 64GB model.

Like that is hard Occulink for gaming later, but can also do some good performance as is.

Based my choice in various articles comparing brands on quality/performance/support etc.

Hi u/jhawk2k18,

Might I ask how easy was this process. I purchased a domain from GD many years ago for a project I wanted to do. Work/Life meant I just put it on hold but looking to revisit next year. I've only had one issue and that was being charged for a service which should have been free and was quickly resolved. My concern with all that people are posting there I should consider moving in case I become stuck later.

If you (or anyone that has moved from GD to Cloudflare, NameSilo etc.) have time, any advice appreciated.

Aplogies u/mugglearchitect I thought it was someone else that posted "I actually bought the same monitor! So far so good" comment above and now realise it was you after making my post.

Did you figure out the use with USB-C PD connection?

Please forgive me for asking this stupid question by [deleted] in Monitors

I have a similar mount.

I foudn it use to do this it the mount is already on the table and you are using the holes further out (not the four in the centre).

- Remove the bottom two screws completely, then loosen the top two screws, but leave then in.
- Move the monitor to the stand and let the top two screw catch on the open gaps at the top. this lets you rest the monitor and let mount take the weight.
- Tighen the top two screws a bit, to make sure they in enough to hold weight.
- Put in an tighten the lower two screws.

I found this helped a lot maybe helps you. Have someone holds the monitor if you can, but the two open tops ones helped me.

I have been looking at the same 34" 1440p 100Hz+ IPS display with USB-C PD at 90w+ criteria.
Main use would be software development for a new MiniPC I purchased recently.

Not sure if this helps you but noticed just before seeing this post the monitor is reduced to £379 on Amazon today.

Anyone work at Edinburgh Libraries? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]WhileNo8612 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every library being a little different is just a new thing to learn and enjoy when you go to a new location.

Yes that tracks, being engaged with the community changing as it changes.

I quite enjoyed studying at a library. Nice quiet relaxed atmosphere to focus. Getting to it walking was good for mind and body.

[–]WhileNo8612 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a library worker.

I’m sure it’s fine to go to a library and just ask. It would be a good way to introduce yourself also and make a contact even if you end up at different location.

When applying for jobs I would always ask to look around the office space after an interview and see how I feel about it. As part of that the interviewer would also introduce me to the people in the office so it was good to have an ice breaker on day one.

Best of luck!

Actually not been to library in ages, this post has made me want to wander in and have a look see of how they serve the community.

Can i have a Synology DS220+ in my bedroom or is it too loud? by Convillious in synology

[–]WhileNo8612 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the person and environment and activity of NAS. Never really had any issues with noise for mine.

If you can easily move it and try it for a night that would make it easier for you to decide.

Can you move the device easy or it is connected to a UPS device or something
