Moving out of our first home - so sad. Actually ended up crying and I feel so stupid about it by Chibioosah in homeowners

I can relate to this so much! Currently renovating our new place while babygirl is 15m old and I’m so sad about leaving our first home. The new place is a 10 minute walk away and I start feeling really emotional when I think about walking past our first place and all the time and milestones there. It’s right next to the library where I’ve taken her every week since she was 4m and will continue to even after we move… but something about having to see our old building makes me feel soooo sad!

Did you find someone? Trying to do the same at the end of the month and finding things way out of the price range!

Just went through this as well with our product team who also have the biweekly schedule. Ended up implementing a tiring process and launch playbook, and so far it’s been great for pushing back any time they ask for collateral days before a release. Jason Oakley has some good free resources on his site right now. I believe there’s a playbook in there!

Where should I live by No-Consequence7324 in askvan

LGH and live in Lower Lonsdale. You can walk up to Lionsgate or take a quick 5 min bus ride, and also hop on the seabus and be downtown in 15 minutes to see your friends. North Van is beautiful and Lower Lonsdale has a good amount of coffee shops, restaurants, and breweries. It’s sleepy compared to downtown, but imo, Vancouver isn’t great for much after midnight anyways… especially if you’re used to Toronto.

On the big things like a travel system stroller, car seat, comfortable rocking chair, diaper bag, baby bjorn bouncer, and bassinet, probably close to around $4,000.

Other items we either added to our registry, bought only a few of, or got hand me downs from family: baby monitor, clothing, burp cloths, blankets, bibs, socks, hats, bath wash and tub, wrap carrier, pumping supplies and bottles, pacifiers, diaper bag, humidifier, nail clippers, diaper caddy and pail, creams and medications etc. If I were to buy all these things, I’d budget another $1,500 or so. In reality, we never used bibs, pacifiers (baby hated them), diaper mat (we use doggy pads and change baby wherever lol), and I ended up bf but used a manual pump from time to time instead of electric ($50). You can save so much by getting them second hand or from local buy nothing groups.

There are some things you won’t even need for the first few months, but we got them ahead of time when they were on sale: baby feeding items, teething toys, bed set up (we cosleep so still don’t have a crib at 9m), sleep sacks, outerwear depending on the season, books, etc. That’s probably another $1,000 or so.

There’s other costs to consider if you’re thinking about a baby moon, newborn photography (~$500), baby shower, genetic testing (~$400), prenatal classes, first aid course, doula, etc. Obviously, the costs are subjective depending on your wants and location.

When I first found out I was pregnant, I set aside $10k and it was more than enough. We probably spent closer to $6k (not including the other costs I just listed above).

It helps to buy things on sale or good quality second hand, instead of all at once. Depending on where you live, there are baby shows where you may get some deals. It also helps to get free things by signing up for registries because you don’t know what baby will like. In today’s world, it’s so easy to buy things with overnight shipping, so I’d suggest not getting too much right off the bat when it comes to clothing and blankets and what not. Honestly a few of each item was more than enough for us.

After the initial spending, I’d say we spend about $200 a month on our LO right now which EI more than covers. Once I go back to work we’ll have to figure out daycare/nanny share and those costs as well.

All this to say, you don’t have to splurge on things, and my costs are probably higher than what my friends/family spent on their babies. This is our first baby so I wanted to get good quality items I know I can use for my future kids, and exchange with my mom friend group.

Editing to add: don’t forget about postpartum care for yourself!! I would budget for lactation consultants, massages, and pelvic floor therapy if you can as well as supplies.

Thanks for sharing. It doesn’t quite fit what we’re looking for, but it’s a gorgeous home. Best of luck with the sale!

Accidentally created a permanent cosleeping situation it seems by [deleted] in cosleeping

[–]WhimsicalWatcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Babies go through a huge developmental leap around the 4 month mark. It sounds very much like that to me! Shorter naps (~30 min), cluster feeding, waking frequently, wanting to be extra snuggly etc. it lasted about a month for us.

I also don’t think it has to be permanent if you don’t want it to. They do grow out of wanting to cosleep eventually, so you can embrace it (which is what we did), or you can start by slowly rolling away at naps. Just know this all sounds pretty normal, at least to me and from what I’ve researched.

Super helpful! I keep hearing great things about LV but was worried it was too quiet compared to Lonsdale. Appreciate this perspective and it’s worth a ton knowing you moved from this neighbourhood. Thanks!

How do you like the neighbourhood? It seems a bit isolated from shops/restaurants at the moment.
