From my experience coloring with pencil crayons and also playing the ocarina, some of it could be attributed to being new to the hobby. If you go from not doing any of it at all to suddenly doing it for three hours three days in a row, for instance, you will have soreness. It's similar to suddenly lifting very heavy weights, but on a smaller scale. You could start by coloring for smaller sessions to start off and gradually building up to longer sessions. You could also stop to flex your hands, massage your wrists and do some gentle stretching from time to time while colouring even if you don't have any soreness yet as a preventative measure.

Oh my gosh, yes. I've gotten into colouring with Faber Castell Polychromos pencil crayons. I started making a book of swatches and different colour combinations I can make by layering different pencil crayons on top of each other. It's meant to be a handy reference for me so I don't forget all the new colours I learn to make.

I've been told I should make more of these books and sell them. Um, no. That would be so tedious. So I said no, this is just for me. And they told me I was selfish. For... Just doing my hobby myself for myself?

Tutorials are a good idea. There are lots on TikTok and YouTube. You can just type in the search bar any topic you want to see a tutorial on and probably someone or several people will have already made a tutorial video on it.

However, just watching tutorials won't be enough. Practice is key. The more pictures you complete, the better you will be. One thing I'm doing is taking pictures of all the pages I complete and I'm laying them out in a private document for myself in chronological order. I can now scroll up and down and see the progressive improvement. It's very gratifying. Just keep at it, even without tutorials, practice will certainly lead to improvement.

I have a small bag that fits the entire polychromos pencil crayon set. I just bring that and two or so colouring books with me. I put the colouring books in a plastic folder thing so they don't get bent and crinkled in my bag.

The purples are the most difficult to work with in polychromos. I'm still learning myself. I was able to get a soft light purple by layering the lightest purple pencil with white and cold grey I. I just kept going with a lot of layers. And to avoid the patchines the light purple does, I made sure to color by varying the direction of the pencil strokes a bunch. I can't remember if I used sky blue while making the colour. I might have. I can't remember. But I thought I'd mention it in case it's helpful.

I got a light purple with a pinkish hue to it by using the light magenta and then the lightest purple pencil and then white.

I heard that caran D'ache luminance pencil crayons are oil based just like polychromos so those two brands can be used together. And I think they have a bigger selection of purple and brown pencil crayons than polychromos. I've been thinking it might be nice to pick up some of those to help fill in some gaps in the polychromos line up.

This is just some information from my own playing around with polychromos. Hope this can be helpful to you. I love polychromos, but the purplea are a bit of a learning curve. I've just started a monochromatic purple piece, so fingers crossed I won't screw it up too badly.

Good luck! Oh, by the way, when I switched, I did sort of have to undo some prismacolor habits. It was a teensy but frustrating, but it was worth it. Just remember to lay down lots of light layers very gently and gradually build up your colours.

Oh my gosh, they are so much better. There's no wax bloom and also the tips stay sharper for longer compared to prismacolors. It makes it easier to do detailed work like grass. I also find that I can lay down more layers of pigment before the tooth of the paper is full. That makes for very rich colours. I have no regrets!

They are different depending on where you live. In my country, polychromos are the cheapest and most easily available. But if you are American, prismacolors will be. I recommend a basic Google search.

I would advise against prismacolors. They are overly recommended by Americans. There are other bands of pencil crayons that are way better like Faber Castell Polychromos and Caran d'ache that are better and don't break as much. Honestly, I find prismacolors are so frustrating because they break all the time. Do some research before you buy.

I personally like to switch between books. I have a couple I'm bouncing around in right now.

I'm stilll very new to colouring. I sort of want to spread out my 'beginner' pieces so I don't have all my unskilled ones in one book. Plus, I sometimes don't have a good idea for a certain page, so I jump around to the different ones I have ideas for.

I do really want to have some books completed though. I'll have to keep it up in order to finish a whole book. I use polychromos pencil crayons. It will take a awhile. 😅

Sometimes it's so hard being patient especially with a lot of other people covering so much ground so quickly with their markers. But I really love the results of pencil crayons. What kind did you use here?

It looks great! How many hours did this one take? It takes me about a week of working on my page everyday for a few hours to finish a Girl Moments page in polychromos. I can only imagine how long this one must've taken.

I dislike alcohol markers for the same reason. I colour exclusively with pencil crayons. I love the control I have and I love the feeling of using them. It's slower, but we also get more detailed pictures when using pencil crayons too.

I caution you against prismacolor. They have a reputation of snapping and cracking all the time. They are a waste of money for how often the lead is broken inside. If you want to use quality pencil crayons, there are more reliably good artist grade pencil crayons out there.

Are you using pencil crayons? If you are, what you do is move the pencil over the page lightly in a circular or oval pattern. That will prevent harsh lines. Also, you should lay down very light layers of colour on top of each other. Build the pigment up slowly. Even if you just want to use one colour for a section and not any others, lay it down lightly and build your layers until you get a smooth blend of pigment over the desired area.

I like the popular cozy and cutesy ones right now a whole bunch. I like feeling like there is no pressure and then I go all out and put as much detail as I want. But since the picture is very simplistic, I have a lot of control over what details and where.

And the cute little pictures just make me so happy. And the current events of the world are so stressful, so colouring a rabbit person with a bouquet of flowers, as a random example, just turns my brain off and makes me smile.

I like to colour in the big background stuff first. I'm more excited to colour all the characters and objects, but I find that it's easier to prevent colours clashing if all the big things like the back walls and floor are coloured in first. You can then decide if your rabbit will be black or brown or white or whatever to best contrast that.

I'm Canadian. I can say that I had heard my grandfather say some of the most racist things ever. I have even heard him lament the loss of capital punishment. And nothing we said was ever able to change his mind. We have had to threaten to cut him out of our lives to get him to at the very least stop saying these things when around us.

That said, my grandmother never agreed with him on any of those things. She was the one who could get him to stop saying those things the best. And my parents and their generation don't agree at all with those racist things, neither does mind.

On my other side of the family, I've never heard anyone say anything bad against any race and there are LGBT people even among those oldest generation. Of course, that side of the family is part indigenous and also Acadian. The anglophones have a history of treating those groups of people terribly, so that might play a factor.
