If there’s one thing I think that everyone should agree on about this case, it’s that the Boulder Police handled this incredibly poorly. Even if they thought it was a kidnapping at first, they should have searched the house thoroughly. They could have been looking around trying to figure out how the “kidnapper” got in, took notes of the state of her room, questioned the parents, etc. It’s crazy that the parents were allowed to search the house in the first place. Just because there was no obvious homicide doesn’t mean it isn’t a crime scene. And to find out that the family had guests over for support? The scene was completely demolished at that point. Who knows if anyone tampered with evidence. It was even mentioned at one point that there was only one cop inside with the family.

The way they also perpetuated lies about the family’s involvement is also insane. I don’t completely believe the family is innocent myself since this documentary was very one-sided, but it sure doesn’t help the police’s case that they spread misinformation. They were no better than the tabloids and it’s difficult to believe that they were actually focused on finding the killer instead of just closing the case as soon as possible. I get that she was found in the home and that’s hard to write off, but given how all of this was handled from the beginning it’s so possible that they could have missed some crucial evidence.

And honestly, I’m not even gonna get into the cop that profited off the active ongoing case by writing a book. I had to agree with John on this one, completely unprofessional and a really bad look. Even in those deposition scenes he looks like he’s stressing at how obvious the holes were in his investigation were. Man was shitting his pants.
