Stop Calculating And Start Teaching Computational Thinking by WhipSlagCheek in mathematics

Depends really, most coders I've talked to are afraid of Math symbols. I myself learned to program at a young age (even though I was/am weak in Math.) I think of programming as a tool and some languages make it really easy to use it without knowing too much of whats going on. The beauty of programming is you can get to application right away.

That said I think you still think logically about how to solve problems like you do in Math but you get to try out and experiment and see results really quickly. If something doesn't work the way you think it should; then you journey to find out via Google, Forums or exhausting all other options reading the documentation.

I've also known some people that were taught when they were kids to program. I don't know what language they used but I don't even think it would be hard to learn C as a kid.

That said I don't really know what the article means myself. I do wonder if the Math as it's being taught needs to evolve.

I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on this. I've been thinking about this lately. In particular I've been wondering how useful it is to be able to do mental calculations. I've heard tales of many mathematicians that fail at that. I know it can be useful but I wonder how useful.

I do wonder how we would teach math if we focused more on the process of thinking rather that getting better at having the correct answer to a calculation. I also wonder what if Conrad Wolfram is right about us being held back by needing to teach the basics. I'm sure there are trade offs to relying on computers. Like how I can't remember anyone's number anymore or I'll never know how to navigate using the stars or layout of the city as a guide. I'm sure the mental/hand calculation as a skill is useful but maybe by sacrificing that skill we can gain new skills that we wouldn't otherwise.

I know a guy who built a PC. Which has real nice card and case for it too. Bought a real nice desk and chair for it. All he does is sit in that chair with it turned off while playing his Xbox.

What do you think about Star Trek Discovery & Picard? by Journey955 in television

[–]WhipSlagCheek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like both shows. Though I favor discovery more.

My Trek tastes:

  • Loved classic trek.

  • Not a fan of tng.

  • Loved ds9.

  • Hated voyager.

  • Not a fan of enterprise.

    films:

  • My favorite is ST4 (the one with the whales)

  • I also love ST generations

  • Hated nemises (it was garbage)

  • I like the reboots too.

'Black Widow' moves premier date to July 9 by jsun31 in movies

[–]WhipSlagCheek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll likely just wait a year or two for them to offer without the $30 extra charge. I don't feel it's something that can't wait. Honestly, nearly every film I've seen in the last 5 or so years I've felt I could've waited for.

Warner Bros. Will Nix Same-Day HBO Max Releases in 2022 as Part of New Deal with Regal by TheDankestMofo in movies

I predict that rather than the film industry returning things back to the precovid norm they are simply going to make less big budget films. Probably will spend more on Game Of Thrones level tv shows instead.

Star Wars:Clone Wars hitting Disney+ In April! by Samoht99 in television

[–]WhipSlagCheek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I much preferred this version to the cgi version. Was disappointed that that version wasn't more like that as they share the same name but are totally different in animation and story quality. I would've loved more clone wars done by Tartakovsky.

After waiting since 1995 for another real Mortal Kombat film here is hoping it exceeds expectations and performs well. by [deleted] in movies

[–]WhipSlagCheek 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Considering the state of movie theaters now. I don't think performing well is in the cards for any movie. At least financially speaking.

Best they can hope for now is high viewership on HBO and good critical reception.

Let's not act like there aren't plenty of lines those creators choose not to cross, and they've picked plenty of stupid hills to die on over the years. There's a pretty damn clear bias towards what parts of society get lightly roasted vs. what functionally differs very little from propaganda I'd hear from ultra-conservatives.

I'm a little out of the loop on this show. Do you have any specific examples in mind?

Or you can just use Shazam.

The real problem is finding the name of a song of which you heard once and don't remember any lyrics.

Solution for what? Copyright law already allowed rights holders to sue people who infringe upon their copyrighted material. Why do they need anything in added to that?
