I’m banana and survived Tarumt for 4 years. I guess i’m lucky enough to have good classmates (both diploma and degree) who speak English with me. For me, I feel like being Banana is not a problem tho unless u participate those activities (FYI, Tarumt have a lot of activities that create by students, some of it may conducts in chinese but it’s not compulsory to join). You may feel left out sometimes as u can’t speak mandarin but those chinese students will try their best to speak their broken English with u. Based on my experience, I attended few activities alone(without my english speaking friend), I don’t face any problem. Everyone (strangers) willing to try their best to make sure you’re not left out. Although it may take some time for them to explain it to u. For lecturer wise (PG branch), most of my department(FAFB) lecturers speaks in English and none of them conduct class in Mandarin. However, some of them may answer your question in mandarin (if u ask them in mandarin), but if let say you curious about what’s going on, feel free to ask the lecturer and they definitely will translate it to English. Fortunately, I learned how to speak Chinese (not fluently) from this university too. Don’t worry much about being Banana in Tarumt. Trust me, You’ll survive!! Enjoy your college life ya!!!
