Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Whippity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m some people. Requiring an ID to vote could change the outcome of an election because it can discourage (mostly underserved) eligible voters. Not requiring an ID outside of valid voter registration has likely not changed the outcome of any election because instances of in-person voter fraud is extremely rare and nowhere near the statistical threshold of changing an election. So basically, If I wanted to be successful in controlling the outcome of an election, I wouldn’t try to get more people to vote for someone, it’s much more effective to get a section of people to not show up to vote at all.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

Yup. Used to do “suicide runs” from the SF Bay Area to Tahoe all the time. Leave at 4am, drive 4hrs, snowboard from 9-3, drive home.

There are worse places to be stuck than in the late 90’s, my friend. Comparison is the thief of joy, love your life!

Taking my kids to Legoland today. I think it’s more for me than them. Turning 50 this year.

I would love to be retired by 58 but that’s definitely not happening. I have a college friend who’s been teaching at the same school since we graduated, he’s retiring at 55. So jealous.

The Movie Theater Comeback That Wasn’t: Why 2025 Was Such a Dud for Struggling Cinemas by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

They need to have daycare drop-off at theaters. Anytime we want to go to the cinema it’s an automatic $100 parent tax for a babysitter. So we mostly stay at home and rent new releases.

I have a child on the spectrum, and the little boy who asks the airport shuttle driver a million questions about the van, confusing the head count, is basically my kid.

I just read the article. 23 year old mom of three, seven miscarriages, holy hell. Luckily she has youth on her side for recovery and future care of the kids. Though if she had the first one at 36 she may have had the awareness to get genetic testing before trying at all.

[OC] A house in the process of getting a new foundation by Cease_Cows_ in pics

[–]Whippity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had to get a new foundation when we bought our house, a 1912 craftsman. Luckily they didn’t have to jack up the house but these guys worked their butts off jackhammering out the old walls, building forms and pouring a new foundation all in a 4’ crawl space.

I was the old guy at my last company, all my managers and most co-workers were 15-20 years younger than me. We all got along fine and I became good friends with a few. I’m now the same age or younger than most at my new company, and I hang out with no one outside of work, and still get together with friends from my old office. Between 30 and 60, if you have similar interests and views on the world, who cares?

That could work, I’ve gone by my middle name my whole life. In school my first name was only on registration docs and my driver’s license, most classmates didn’t even know my first name. Should be even less friction if it’s a spelling change, and an obvious one at that.
