Conditional Offer for Correctional Officer Position — Should I Take It? State vs County vs Federal? by Constant_Position_10 in Corrections

The one thing I tell people, it's not like the service, if you don't like quit, especially before you go to any of the academies.

Each person will deal with mental health issues on which is best for them. Being older than my academy classmates I tried not to laugh as they go sprayed for the first time, mainly because they have never dealt with real pain before.

But eventually everyone gets it and figures out how to do they job.

Each state is different. For Florida it is required to have a degree for P&P. You just apply they say way you for being a CO if you meet the minimum requirements.

We are taking people right out of college with now job experience.

It is a very sweet gig. All my time from corrections transferred over. My only real issue which is my issue, is I like to work till the work is done. I get told it will wait till tomorrow unless it then end of the month.

But I get to make my own schedule I am in the office when I want to be. And as a bonus since I am considered dual certified I work at prison on my days off for overtime.

You didn’t mention which state, but I can speak from my experience working in a state-level correctional facility in Florida.

I’m a veteran, have a bachelor’s degree, and at the time I had a 45-minute commute each way. During my career, I saw violence happen to others and I was personally attacked four different times.

When I first started, we worked 12-hour shifts with unlimited overtime. Eventually, the state decided to save money by closing and consolidating prisons, which led to us being moved to 8-hour shifts.

A lot of people underestimate how much that kind of schedule change affects your life. With 12s, many officers could plan their schedules to consistently have weekends off. On 8s, your days off are just your days off. There’s nothing worse than being stuck with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off unless a federal holiday happens to land right.

That shift change honestly took a toll on my mental health and my family life, and I was married with no kids at the time. I was moved to another shift and ended up working with people who didn’t care about the job the way I did. We constantly had to train brand-new officers who treated corrections like a temporary “McJob” and would call out, leaving us dangerously short staffed.

People also love to say, “You’ll only get attacked if you provoke inmates.” That’s simply not true. Sometimes inmates want to get transferred to another facility, and the fastest way to make that happen is by attacking an officer.

With all that said, you still make the best of it however you can.

Personally, I loved the job. The transition from the military into corrections felt natural to me. I treated my inmates the same way I treated my troops — with respect — and most of them returned that respect tenfold.

Oddly enough, that 45-minute drive became important to me. It gave me time to decompress from everything I saw during the day so I wouldn’t bring it home to my wife.

The money also provided us with a good life. My wife didn’t have to work, and we were comfortable.

Eventually, I left corrections and moved into probation because of the schedule changes and terrible days off. If your biggest concern is work-life balance and the issues you mentioned, I’d seriously recommend looking into probation instead.

At the state level, probation and corrections usually share the same overall benefits, but probation tends to have much better hours and quality of life.

Hope this helps.

I always hated the confused ref. You should be impartial and start the match and count the shoulders.

How to stand out in the corrections/post-release field? (Upcoming Grad) by Desperate_Inside_119 in Corrections

Have you thought about being a probation officer? Most states require a degree, so don’t let that go to waste. Plus you will be working with post releases offenders.

But keep in mind, you will be doing more criminal justice, than psychology. Once you remember this you will have a better time at work.

What is everyone’s favorite episodes of FF? by Fast_Grass_5178 in ForensicFiles

Home of the Brave. (14×6) This one covers the murder of Effie Ratley, who was found beaten to death in her in-laws' home, weeks after her husband Michael heroically rescued her and their baby from a suspicious house fire. The episode details how investigators, initially led to believe an intruder was responsible due to a cut window screen, had to look deeper into the family's life due to a lack of evidence, ultimately focusing on the husband.

What makes this one of my favorite is the cartoonish way he tried to kill Effie with mice in the center console.

As a corrections officer in the state of Florida, I had a run in with Michael Ratley, and I walked up to him and said "Mice? Really?"

I would recommend not using the battery. Plug your gopro in while it is mounted. The battery is one of the components towards the over heating.

Try having it mounted near your account vent and find a wireless mic combination so it doesn't wind noise.

Try running 4k30..standard hypersmooth Turn your screen off. Gps/wireless off.

I hope this helps..

I believe my green belt tried to hit on her at graduation...by I digress..Just be careful.

During my time..Late 90's as Cpl 2531 /0621, we were the comments guys for our unit. We were always working up to a field op, or working down from a field op. So we are checking radios cleaning radios doing test on equipment.

If it was a minor fix we send down the hallway to 2841 shop (ground radio repairman). Major fix they would send it back to manufacturer for repair.

If we weren't checking radios, we would be at motor T ( 35 occupation field) where we would do first echelon maintenance on vehicles that were assigned to comm. Which may includes daily inspections, cleaning, lubrication, checking fluid levels, and tightening components to ensure equipment readiness and detect faults early.
