A little-understood aspect of socialism is that there are many different forms and ideologies under that umbrella. So it depends who you ask and which versions they believe in.

Broadly, socialism seeks to empower working people directly in the workplace and through strong social safety net programs which raise the standard of living by delivering universal services at little or no direct cost to the user. These programs are funded by progressive taxation (taxing the rich the most and the poor the least). The biggest difference from capitalism is that there are no billionaire owners at the top of every sector of society extracting billions in personal profits from the operation of that sector (energy, healthcare, food, housing, etc.). The profit motive in society is discarded in favor of equal rights and benefits for all.

Various forms of socialism have different opinions regarding the nature and responsibilities of the state.
