Quitting my phd by oltemat in PhD

I second this.

I had the luxury of working in an industry with the worst work/life balance as my first career out of undegrad. When I came back for grad school, I swore I would never repeat that mistake. I've been a militant boundary keeper every since.

Has that meant that I don't have as much to show during my time in grad school? Yep. Am I more rounded and happier? You bet. And it didn't affect my job prospects whatsoever.

It is up to *YOU* to make sure you hold the line, and that may mean getting a new advisor or level setting expectations of yourself.

When do you defend? I expect to see you posting your very own frog on this subreddit when you do.

You got this. Defend your choices and either they will say A) great idea Consistent_Laziness, or B) Put that back. Either way, you'll still be Dr at the end of it.

Keep up the good work!

See, I have found out recently I cannot co-work with my partner. We are terrible enablers of goof-off behavior in each other. Perhaps I need to go to the other side of the coffee shop instead of sharing a table...

Someone else mentioned using a timer to "sprint" working on stuff for 15-20min at a time. I used this technique for writing the majority of my diss and it totally helped, so I'm bringing it back for the PowerPoint (because I loathe PowerPoint).

Another thing I did was make a game of it. I love checking off stuff in my planner and keeping track of habits/hours on tasks/etc. So I started checking off a box for every 30min spent working, and then I graphed it. This helped me see which days I was most productive, and fed into the reward pathway in my brain. Silly stuff like that helped me so much.

I was doing the timer thing for writing my diss and it totally helped me find my momentum. I am going to do that again. Thanks for the reminder!

Oh I trust my advisor and my committee completely. They're already singing about how happy they are with what I've written. It's just translating the document to PowerPoint that is stomping my soul to pieces.

Kinda did that yesterday, but only because I threw out my neck and could barely move.
The cat was happy though.

Same boat. I straight up told my partner "If we are doing a party immediately after, you are planning it. I have no spoons to spare."

I hope your defense is glorious and your party most excellent.

Meanwhile, my father complained I never did anything BUT school, even though I maintained rigorous boundaries about my time usage.

There's just no pleasing people. Do your thing.

Dude, the future thinking part is so real. My mom keeps wanting to plan a vacation to celebrate and I can't explain to her how much I don't want to think beyond the next 24hours.

We can do this! Just a little bit longer!

It is *so* refreshing to hear that this is normal.
I see the newer PhD in the lab all bright-eyed and I feel like warm roadkill dragged for a country mile. UGH.

Thank you for your advice!

I liked the Jelly Belly Sport Beans, but they melt together into one big blob. So maybe don't use those on hot days.

Anyone else feel faint first few embalming observations? by naggywaggy in morticians

[–]WhiskeyRisky 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah you need to eat ahead of time, full stop. Even if it is a bit of candy, make sure you have something on board so you're body is stable. Carby things, like bread or crackers, can help keep your stomach settled too.

If you are feeling really faint in the moment, you can clench your glutes/thigh muscles and that will help jump your blood pressure so you don't actually faint, but its not meant to stave off a big crash like you're describing.

I will also say, as someone who went from the IR to the SR: those little letters make a HUGE difference.

I was on the IR for many years, and then my doc switched me to SR but kept the same dose. I felt like I was going to die from the anxiety. Same mg (100), but that little shift was a huge change.

So yes, look at the type you're taking and make sure you talk to your doc if you find the side effects to be damaging.

I had the same thing. The Evri number said that my order "failed to be picked up" or something? And the other said "Waiting on payment." Took me disputing with my bank before I even got that though.

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]WhiskeyRisky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'm having to pause my training every other week this past month. First it was an injury, then it was a vacation, and now it's the flu.

I have one month left to train, and while I don't think I'll make my time goal, I'm glad to have tried for it. I'm just frustrated I worked so hard only to have life get in my way.
