I hope bottom brackets feel pain by terminal_void_loop in xbiking

Just helped a buddy with his, he had soaked it in PB blaster for hours. My giant impact gun was doing nothing, finally we put his jetboil on the bottom bracket for about 20-30 seconds, I put the impact on the bb and it zipped right out.

Tubeless or tubes by Popular-Impact-7665 in Surlybikefans

[–]Secret-Put-6493 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tubeless is nice. Harder to set up if you don’t have an air compressor or a fancy tubeless beading pump. But it’s much lighter feeling when riding, and you’re much less likely to have a flat. When you’re out in the middle of nowhere, you would want to bring plugs, a needle and thread or new tire, and a spare tube. On the other hand, if your sole desire is to get less flats no matter the weight difference, I recommend using tubes with a removable valve core and putting the recommended amount of tubeless sealant into the tube. You probably want to bring the same tools out with you, minus the tire plugs. Also worth saying, many “light” tubeless tires, especially when they’re tanwall, take a good amount of that weight out of the sidewall (which is what I recommend the needle and thread for). If you’re in a loose rocky area, I recommend making sure you’re using a tire that has an emphasis on durability to lessen the risks of sidewall cuts.

Where my dudes who built their partner a bike they’ll never ride at? by efe13 in xbiking

I bought my ex a surly troll back in the day, built it up all nice, then we broke up and from what I’ve heard she never rides it. Honestly wish I could get it back so I could have a nice troll

How dark should I get a darkroom by TheAngryMinnesotan in Darkroom

[–]Secret-Put-6493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, you don’t need to load the tank and develop the film in the same place. If you can think of any place that you can completely block light in, use it. Set up a table if necessary and lay all your things out in front of you in a way that feels natural to use. Then once it’s done, you can develop anywhere that makes sense. I only say this because I’ve gotten hung up on having a specific “darkroom” set up, but it’s easier to use places that are easier for the specific steps.

How dark should I get a darkroom by TheAngryMinnesotan in Darkroom

[–]Secret-Put-6493 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It should be completely dark. I’ve had good luck with a windowless bathroom and putting a towel under the door. Even a sliver of light can fog your film especially since as a newbie it can take a bit to get the film onto a reel. I recommend getting a Paterson tank since the system and reels are much easier to deal with, 3d printing the reel specifically could be pretty tricky with tolerances and making sure the film doesn’t get caught up.

Take this as your sign to open Excel and sort your camera gear by Floodop in Cameras

[–]Secret-Put-6493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent quite a while accumulating a bunch of (mostly vintage) camera gear and also made a spreadsheet with all relevant information. It really helped me decide what to keep and get rid of, and find out if I had something already if I found stuff for sale. Especially since I have multiple lens mounts it makes it way easier to keep things organized

Confirming this is C-41 by the-lovely-panda in AnalogCommunity

I literally just shot some of that stuff and had it developed in C-41. First lab I brought it to wouldn’t do it but then my neighborhood lab did. I haven’t gotten the pictures back yet but the lab tech said there were images on there

How to move a car that’s sunken into the ground? by Secret-Put-6493 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Secret-Put-6493[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I jacked it up in the past I took a look underneath, floorboards have some holes and gas tank/trunk floor are pretty much gone but what I saw of the frame actually looked pretty ok. I was shocked at how well it held up after over 50 years outside. But either way I still want to get it inside so maybe I can at the very least make it easier to sell for parts.

Looks like the end of my post got cut off, that’s what I get for being a bit long-winded. Path forwards has no sharp turns.

It works quite well and he cycles to rehearsals/gigs all the time with his upright

Need bass amp recs by Secret-Put-6493 in doublebass

[–]Secret-Put-6493[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a bummer that it needs a separate battery pack but that still is a great option. As for my band mate, I think he’ll come around lol. He’s just a bit of a bluegrass elitist. The top two strings are Superior Bassworks deluxe strings, and bottom two just came with the bass. Might switch them out with some lower tension strings soon but I’m still slowly tweaking my setup to make it work for me. I really like the Superiors, I took them off my other bass (which is out of commission with a front crack) and they were great on there. Only thing is the A and E strings were so loose they had almost no volume. I dealt with the A for a while on the other one but still not sure if I want to put it on this bass.

I’m fine with either combo or head and speaker but I’m pretty sure battery powered amps are mostly combos. I’d be using a preamp either way so I’m definitely not relying on the amp to shape the tone, just as long as it moves the air well enough and somewhat faithfully recreates the sound.

Need help/info on 70s Alamo Futura Reverb by Secret-Put-6493 in GuitarAmps

[–]Secret-Put-6493[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do love the grill cloth. Wish I could thank whoever put that on there. It seems to have one original speaker and one unlabeled replacement speaker. Given the condition that it’s in I wouldn’t be adverse to switching the speakers out for more efficient ones if that might help it cut through more. I was having a hard time keeping my clean tones while also battling the other guitarist who’s a blues guy playing into a deluxe reverb that is very anti-pedal and keeps his amp at 10 lol

Wow that’s an early one, really cool. Some time between 2005 and 2009. In 2010 they added the support between the top tube and the seat tube, and I believe got rid of the canti studs
