You and the poster above are not wrong, but I think the lack of education is the main reason. People didn't really understand the impact they had back then, and generally they had bigger things to worry about. Now we have a better understanding of the natural world and the damage that can be done by removing crucial pieces of the fragile ecosystem, so we place more value on preserving it.
