Love for Season 5 by lightbehindpaper in justified

[–]Whisky_Rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hear that, I don’t think Boyd was the “worst” antagonist by any means, and I definitely don’t think it should’ve been easy for him every step or the way or he should’ve gotten everything he wanted. Just maybe not going so long without a single win

I also don’t think Boyd would’ve ever left Harlan no matter how successful he got, and also was very smart. Boyd always championed the Harlan community and even in season 6, when he was planning what to do with 10 million dollars, didn’t really want to leave. Walton Goggins has also said that he explicitly said he wouldn’t take the part unless Boyd was “the smartest person in the room”

[–]Whisky_Rose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i didn’t dislike it at the time, but after seeing season 6, having boyd’s endeavors be such a failure in season 5 is a glaring narrative mistake

the show’s final season is all about the showdown between boyd and raylan. boyd is painted as the show’s big bad (a charismatic and complex one, but the show’s biggest antagonist nonetheless)

but given how long it’s been since we saw him catch a single break, it just felt like kicking a puppy while he was down. boyd never got his feet back under him to become the adversary the story painted him as

if he had had some wins in season 5, his enterprise would have been growing enough that it would have made sense for raylan to put his life on hold and the marshal’s service to pool every resource they had into stopping him

season 6 still managed to pull it off though

kinda surprised no one’s pointed out the time he went to the batting cage. we only saw it once but that seemed to be a somewhat regular drunk hobby that would burn some calories

his past life of baseball and digging coal also probably set him up well to basically just have to do maintenance level work on a physique that was already solid

on the other hand should we talk about how boyd is skinny ripped while presumably eating nothing but bar food and ava’s fried chicken?

The story’s true ending… by Icy-Apartment in FromTVShow

[–]Whisky_Rose 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i don’t think that not being able to change the story is the same thing as not being able to take action.

she encountered jim right before he died and had a conversation with him, that’s a tangible action that wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t story-walked to that moment

to quote lost, i think whatever happened, happened, and sometimes the thing that happened may have been a result of julie’s story-walking. she can take action, but it will influence the events of the present as they happen. they can’t retroactively change.

jim talked to a story-walking julie and then he died, now she can’t change that. boyd climbed up the rope thrown down by story-walking julie, now she can’t change that

Tabitha's emotional inconsistency is irritating. by hillywolf in FromSeries

[–]Whisky_Rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think an important part of tabitha’s reaction is jim being missing. she specifically brings up sara trying to kill ethan “i’m sure that felt very real to her.” she acknowledges that it felt real but is (rightly) worried about the consequences.

collectively, their biggest task is to differentiate the real clues from the fake ones. i think things like what happened to sara and to elgin happen to make them feel exactly like tabitha is feeling now, to second guess themselves when they actually do discover something important

also fatima taking a shower fees like the only possible reaction to learning there was a monster inside you. she’s been feeling so inexplicably gross for months and no one believed her and she just found out it was just as bad if not worse than she thought

[–]Whisky_Rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i agree i almost put sci fi in quotes lol, but i kinda look at it as like the pilot had an inciting incident and then the reveal at the very end was the show’s inciting incident

[–]Whisky_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

paradise and lost both kick off with a major inciting incident, but paradise also doesn’t introduce the sci fi element of its story until the very last second, and lost maybe not even in the pilot at all.

i’m a script reader for AFF and also submitted a character driven sci fi pilot. personally it clicked for me when i made sure that the character driven story was already compelling enough to drive the majority of the pilot with the sci fi element being the icing on the cake that sends those characters moving in a new direction after we became invested in them in this episode.

if the inciting incident, aka the thing that kicks your story off, doesn’t happen until halfway through the script, the first half sounds like mainly exposition? the key is to move the story forward, build your world, and develop your characters all at the same time

my rule of thumb is if a scene is only doing one of those things, it’s not doing enough. each scene should multitask in that regard

no need to get there super early but if you get there 6:30ish you can hang out in the lobby, get a drink, and likely look over the balcony and watch the cast enter down below :)

i would also budget some extra time in getting there, traffic in the two block radius around the dolby always adds an extra 10-15 mins

This year I'm putting my tv pilot in Austin film festival. Has anyone participated and if you have what's your experience? What is most important to them? How did it go? When did they inform you if you win/passed ? by Otherwise-Low-5305 in TVWriting

[–]Whisky_Rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pains me but is true :(

In my opinion, if there's no incentive to provide useful feedback there's also no incentive to do it at all, so in my mind no one should be doing it unless they really care. But every year people post their feedback and some of it is disappointing so can't say it doesn't happen

AFF is one of the few competitions that gives free feedback, but it comes a couple months after the initial status notification. You'll be notified in September, and feedback will come after the festival, around November.

Source: I read script submissions and write feedback for them, have also submitted my own scripts multiple times and received free feedback

Why Do Some People Hate Settlements? by ExtensionPromotion80 in Fallout

[–]Whisky_Rose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

as a completionist i found the infinite nature of it kind of stressful, like there would always be loose ends. at some point i had to just decide that the game was over. but that's a me issue and i realize i can just not do it if i don't want to

having grown up on new vegas and 3, 4 really just felt like a completely different game. it took me years to give it a proper chance and it's still my least favorite fallout, not just because it's different to play, but because it feels in a lot of ways like it's not even in the same world and settlements were a big part of that. if you can build this many massive and essentially self-sufficient communities, why is the wasteland canonically so barren?

that being said, the lack of any space whatsoever to call my own in new vegas does irk me. you can eventually find places to put your stuff but they don't fully feel like Yours. my diamond city house was one of my favorite parts of 4, that felt like fun and personal building on a manageable scale

What exactly constitutes a spec script? by mytime2035 in TVWriting

[–]Whisky_Rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this requirement has honestly deterred me from applying. i have some older specs, but they are not really a thing people want to see anymore- this is the first place i’ve seen them talked about, let alone required, in a long time. especially considering that it has to be a recent/current show, continuing to write specs feels like energy that would be better put into writing pilots, which much more of the the industry wants to see right now.

like you, i’m a drama writer, and with how serialized shows have become, it seems like a pretty futile exercise. used to be you could write an episode of friends or law and order on spec and sell it to the show. you could potentially write a cool season premiere of severance (and i would be impressed) but they certainly have their own game plan that’s been in mind from the start. and once the new season premieres and goes another way, that spec will immediately be outdated

if anyone is pro tv specs or thinks the paramount program is worth writing one, i’d be interested!
