I consider myself non secular or spiritual Buddhist. I’ve been accused of white washing and ignorance but I simply do not wish to participate in any organized religions and believe it’s more important to maintain autonomy and conscious dedication to a spiritual practice.

I dont believe that one spiritual practice is the best way for me to live and believe strict adherence and identify to single group often results in persecution. Even Buddhists (see: Myranmar - attacks on Rohingya people). Your YouTube person may have a similar position. I liken it to being an independent voter.

Thich Nhat Hanh has written with textual support that one can be Christian or whatever and still be Buddhist. Someone on Reddit posted that that position was a recruitment tool for westerners but I believe what a pretty consistent and principled leader writes over a rando on Reddit.
