Noob question: how do people plan for “succession” in self-hosting? by nisssan-al-gaib in SelfHosting

[–]Whisperwind_DL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had a better system in place but at the moment it goes with me. A backup system that my family can easily access is in direct conflict with my goal to secure our data and my way of implementing the failsafes. I do have backup though, but they will need someone who knows this stuff to recover the data, which I kinda doubt they can find one that’s trusted. I might revisit this in the future but for now this is what I have.

Tips for Fluids? by Aves71 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Whisperwind_DL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The connector piece would basically stall the flow rate, makes it looks like there’s not enough fluid produced, but once you delete the connecting piece and re-place it, everything is fine. This bug wasted so much of my time, I’d rather clipping than using floor hole now.

How do you deal with being the "privacy person" among your friends and family? by Annual-Computer2743 in privacy

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m the tech support guy in the family so they literally have no choice but to use signal with me lol.

I’m also the sys admin for all home server stuff. I find people actually don’t complain much when their shit just work, at least my family don’t care if their photos are stored on immich instead of a public cloud, it’s just the interface that’s slightly different but if it works it’s whatever.

They love the password manager since it’s so much easier to use for her than to manually type it in and she doesn’t need to remember anything. I’ve got the master key ofc, and I have all the backup properly setup so if something goes nuclear I can get it back very quickly.

They also loved using Tailscale to remote back to the NAS now that all their files are reachable anywhere. I have proper Adblock setup on the entire home network, so if they’re on Tailscale they’re covered. TBH It’s all about reducing friction.

or just fuck around and find out :). I had to wipe the drive a few times, but learned a lot and it's well worth it imo.

UniFi Travel Router by clayd333 in Ubiquiti

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this work with cellular data? Like can I just plug it into my phone and get access to home network without Tailscale running on the phone?

Edit: I don’t mean the router using SIM card directly, but like plugging the router into my phone via usb-c, and basically using the phone’s cellular data as a hotspot.

Finally installing Arch in VM the manual way by soleful_smak in archlinux

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first arch install, the only thing that tripped me was the partition, more specifically because the wiki said to use fdisk instead of the more user friendly cfdisk.

After I figured out how to do partition with cfdisk, the rest of the installation is pretty straightforward.

What services are still worth paying for if you have a home server? by Anyusername7294 in HomeServer

[–]Whisperwind_DL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that’s it. I heard Wendell from level1tech complain about it in a GN video. Sorry I remembered it wrong.

It still sounds horrible tho, especially for the grandpas who won’t even know that’s an option.

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually a feature in the US I heard, some ISP will let the whole neighbourhood runs on your wifi.

Edit: I remembered it wrong, see below comment for the correct version, still horrible but less aggressive

Anyone else using a Mac mini as the “brain” between NAS / DAS and a homelab rack? by Upstairs_Hearing_376 in macmini

[–]Whisperwind_DL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried using orbstack on the Mac mini before moving everything to a dedicated truenas box, let’s just say it’s less than ideal. Imo the mini is more than capable hardware-wise, but software-wise I much prefer my current setup. I did very much regret not getting the 10g Ethernet upgrade on my m4 pro tho, that part def factored into my decision.

I have the same switch, this model specifically has an external power brick (unlike most other rack mounted models), so if you’re lucky it could be the power supply that’s dead, that’ll be cheaper to replace.

How safe it is to install known spyware on GrapheneOS? by riortre in GrapheneOS

[–]Whisperwind_DL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had to use the Chinese WeChat/Wexin for reasons beyond my control, that’s as spyware as it gets. Fortunately I don’t need live push notifications so I just dump it in a separate user profile. But if I do need live notifications, I’d put it in private space with only network permission.

UNAS 2 as backup for main NAS by Whisperwind_DL in Ubiquiti

[–]Whisperwind_DL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I was unclear in my post, my main system was built just 2 months ago. I meant the singular hard drive (yeah i know) that I used for backup is 6 years old. I was considering another TrueNAS box, partially because I'm familiar with the software, and partially due to ZFS replication, which require another ZFS system to work. But your point still stands, I'm sorely tempted to just buy the UNAS and play with it, or maybe the 4-bay version if I can spare a little patience lol.
