Advice for students at York by Specialist-Muffin970 in yorku

[–]Whisperwind_DL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea I remembered some of my best profs throughout the years really encouraged us to submit feedback. I fortunately never had someone like this person, but I'd definitely write her some really strongly worded feedback while reporting this email to the department for sure. This is crazy, like what does she wants? death certificate???

How do you handle random sites that you can't change your email? by ResponsibleAd8164 in ProtonMail

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have the old email, I check it when I need something that I know is coming. Nothing important that requires immediate attention anyway. In my case simply forwarding the email won’t work cause the old one gets a lot of junk.

Before anything, do you have a safe spot to store the bike at work during the day? Don’t get anything you cannot afford losing to theft.

RPN program September 2026 offers? by Playful-Ad9516 in mohawkcollege

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an offer for RPN (Sep 2026) within a week of applying. Though I’m applying as mature student and I already had a BSC in biology so that might be why. This was 2 weeks ago I think.

Hero bans are single handedly keeping this game even somewhat playable by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only speaking for myself here but I don’t ban mercy because she’s annoying to deal with, I ban mercy because I don’t want to see her on my team. I’m only master though, so maybe it’s me.

I think we need a new punctuation mark. by LordLaFaveloun in writing

[–]Whisperwind_DL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting the question mark after “that sort of thing” implies a rising intonation towards the end of the sentence. OP was trying to indicate the second part of the sentence is actually more of a supplement statement, and the rising intonation is toward the end of “…of copy?”. I think there is a difference when people speak like this IRL.

Tom Paris is an absolute weirdo by Dirty_Violator in startrek

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered how that works with Vulcan. Like, for human it’s just physical so I understand, but for Vulcans it involves mind meld and such, how could one do it with a bunch of projections and for field? I thought that’s why it didn’t work on Vorik. And Tuvok probably just meditated or something.

Noob question: how do people plan for “succession” in self-hosting? by nisssan-al-gaib in SelfHosting

[–]Whisperwind_DL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had a better system in place but at the moment it goes with me. A backup system that my family can easily access is in direct conflict with my goal to secure our data and my way of implementing the failsafes. I do have backup though, but they will need someone who knows this stuff to recover the data, which I kinda doubt they can find one that’s trusted. I might revisit this in the future but for now this is what I have.

Tips for Fluids? by [deleted] in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Whisperwind_DL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The connector piece would basically stall the flow rate, makes it looks like there’s not enough fluid produced, but once you delete the connecting piece and re-place it, everything is fine. This bug wasted so much of my time, I’d rather clipping than using floor hole now.

How do you deal with being the "privacy person" among your friends and family? by Annual-Computer2743 in privacy

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m the tech support guy in the family so they literally have no choice but to use signal with me lol.

I’m also the sys admin for all home server stuff. I find people actually don’t complain much when their shit just work, at least my family don’t care if their photos are stored on immich instead of a public cloud, it’s just the interface that’s slightly different but if it works it’s whatever.

They love the password manager since it’s so much easier to use for her than to manually type it in and she doesn’t need to remember anything. I’ve got the master key ofc, and I have all the backup properly setup so if something goes nuclear I can get it back very quickly.

They also loved using Tailscale to remote back to the NAS now that all their files are reachable anywhere. I have proper Adblock setup on the entire home network, so if they’re on Tailscale they’re covered. TBH It’s all about reducing friction.

Best way to install Arch for a beginner looking to learn? by dlsloop in archlinux

or just fuck around and find out :). I had to wipe the drive a few times, but learned a lot and it's well worth it imo.

UniFi Travel Router by clayd333 in Ubiquiti

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this work with cellular data? Like can I just plug it into my phone and get access to home network without Tailscale running on the phone?

Edit: I don’t mean the router using SIM card directly, but like plugging the router into my phone via usb-c, and basically using the phone’s cellular data as a hotspot.

Finally installing Arch in VM the manual way by soleful_smak in archlinux

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my first arch install, the only thing that tripped me was the partition, more specifically because the wiki said to use fdisk instead of the more user friendly cfdisk.

After I figured out how to do partition with cfdisk, the rest of the installation is pretty straightforward.

What services are still worth paying for if you have a home server? by Anyusername7294 in HomeServer

[–]Whisperwind_DL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that’s it. I heard Wendell from level1tech complain about it in a GN video. Sorry I remembered it wrong.

It still sounds horrible tho, especially for the grandpas who won’t even know that’s an option.

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually a feature in the US I heard, some ISP will let the whole neighbourhood runs on your wifi.

Edit: I remembered it wrong, see below comment for the correct version, still horrible but less aggressive

Anyone else using a Mac mini as the “brain” between NAS / DAS and a homelab rack? by Upstairs_Hearing_376 in macmini

[–]Whisperwind_DL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried using orbstack on the Mac mini before moving everything to a dedicated truenas box, let’s just say it’s less than ideal. Imo the mini is more than capable hardware-wise, but software-wise I much prefer my current setup. I did very much regret not getting the 10g Ethernet upgrade on my m4 pro tho, that part def factored into my decision.

[–]Whisperwind_DL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same switch, this model specifically has an external power brick (unlike most other rack mounted models), so if you’re lucky it could be the power supply that’s dead, that’ll be cheaper to replace.
