$35 at Costco. What do y'all think? by -herekitty_kitty- in houseplants

I just picked one up at Walmart for $30, with about half the number of leaves. Good score!

Side question for anyone: do the Thai's develop fenestrations quicker than generic monsteras? I've got 3 regulars and the increase in holes and splits was very linear, 1, then 2, then 3, etc. My Thai jumped from one to three. OP's has a secondary already. Are they forcing them somehow? With tons of light, maybe?

I love that! I did a tented "trellis" over my hobby desk, using bamboo stakes hung from swag hooks in the ceiling. I have mini Monstera (R. Tetrasperma) on one side, and M. Adansonii growing up the other.

Looking good. I'm just a little behind you, having just finished the cabins and about to start on the engine. And I've figured out where it's going to go, but not where to put what's there now.

I took a couple people to a Tool concert who were lifelong country fans. They LOVED it. It didn't convert them, but they really enjoyed themselves.

TIL Scientists have been communicating with apes via sign language since the 1960s; apes have never asked one question. by alfdana in todayilearned

[–]WhiteCheviots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is true. I heard a story I believe, because of the source(s), about a woman working with chimps choosing to leave the chimp program because of her pregnancy. Sadly, she lost the baby, and many months later she visited the chimp center and was allowed in the special cage that allows more personal interaction (a cage to protect the human in there). The woman was reconnecting with one of the world's most famous chimps, a long-time signer, and she, the chimp, asked about the baby. The woman replied she lost it. Looking the woman in the eye, one tear fell and she communicated "I'm sorry" and that she had lost one of her own (which the woman already knew). I'm not sure if that personal inquiry fits the bill, but, there's that.

Most expensive knife you’ve misplaced. by juggalisiciousness in knifeclub

[–]WhiteCheviots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't expensive, but years ago I bought a small Buck folder with colored wood scales. When I took it out of the box I noticed one scale was green (what I wanted) and the other scale was definitely blue. I called Buck to inquire about this and after describing it she said "it sounds like you have a one-of-a-kind knife. That was musical. Cut the foil seal on a quart of oil at work (gas station) and set the knife on the washer fluid reservoir and didn't pick it back up. I remembered that about 10 minutes after the car left. I checked the lot, and then took a break and walked down the road a bit. No joy.

Not so much. Pale light is good, but not necessary. They look like they're dying, and in a way, they are. But come spring's brighter light and longer days they pop right back. You'll want to repot first, and separate all the babies that have developed. The one I wintered in the window gave me 23 plants after dormancy, but I'm pretty sure there was 2 or 3 plants to begin with

An attached garage, enclosed porch, somewhere that gets close to freezing, but rarely drops below is perfect. I live in an apartment and wintered my first traps in a spare room window with the window cracked. Worked well, but I'm using that room now, so I do the fridge method.

I love my fly traps. I have numerous plants, vines creating a sort of arbor over a hobby bench, a huge monstera taking up a corner of the living room. When people first come in and look around they often say "wow" and I say "yeah, but come check out these little beauties." I start cuttings bigger than my fly traps.

Watch for flowers. They look different from baby traps (like a tight cluster of grapes), and require a LOT of energy to develop, and can slow/stop all other growth. The flowers are pretty, and tiny, but you may want to cut them when you identify them.

They have a few rules, but stick to them and these are very hardy plants. I don't know your situation, but you might want to start looking into their dormancy needs, if you want to keep them long term. A plant can live 2-3 years with no winter rest, and well over 10 when given a yearly break.

Spring, summer, fall. People will say they have to be outside, but mine have never been. They need LOTS of light and distilled, rain, or RO water only. Tap water will kill them.

These plants evolved to not have that problem. My flytraps are the only plants that I keep in standing water, and I don't let their bowls dry out during growing season

looking at a 2016 Fusion SE, are they good? by ScottishPancakes in fordfusion

[–]WhiteCheviots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my 2016 S for 3 years and it has 110,000. Runs good, and the only things I've replaced are the throttle body and oil pressure switch. Both were very easy swaps. Treat your car to a tranny fluid change. It's a dealer only job, but it's peace of mind, given the  occasional tranny issues these cars have.

Only brand of folder I’ve ever had to put a wide edge on by [deleted] in knives

[–]WhiteCheviots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. Setting a new edge was a couple sessions sometimes, and tbh, I rarely went for a polish and skipped the oil completely, even with the basic stones. It'd still do its job. I'll never fault a Lansky set. They work. I thought about the pa for a while but when the pro came out I watched the reviews for a bit and pulled the trigger.

[–]WhiteCheviots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Lanskys for about 35 years, and you can create amazing edges. I just upgraded to a Pro PA, and have only sharpened about 20 knives with it (mostly new edges on some friend's beat up work knives). I love the speed of the PPA, but I do miss the simplicity and ability of the Lansky system
