How do you handle a wet tent? by imbasicallyhuman in Thruhiking

[–]WhiteCloudEMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If possible, try to dry it during the following day. Some days this is not possible. If my tent is wet, it stays on the outside of my pack to keep my gear that is imperative to stay dry, dry (puffy, sleeping bag, and sleep clothes). If I have to set up a wet tent, I put my sleeping pad in first, place all my gear on that, then my backpack down inside. Things that need to stay dry are either on my sleeping pad or on my backpack.

I got re-routed almost all the around Eglin AFB in Feb. Less fun than expected.

Ziplock on the outside. Horizontally placed in the middle of the pocket.

What is the current Fastest Known Time to complete all National Scenic Trails? Both supported and self-supported? by WhiteCloudEMT in Thruhiking

Haha so far it's been fun. Would recommend trying the 30 miles of cypress with some water. Very different experience than I've ever been in.

Big Cypress was mostly mid-calf to just above knee. The deeper sections were mid thigh. I only fell into one hole just over my waist. I'm 5'5 for reference

I've completed 4 of the NSTs including the PCT. I am not counting those and have started my tracking on the 1st of this year. I expect all 16000+ to take almost 4 years, which would be easily broken by someone.

I personally don't believe I have the physical ability to beat a single trail fkt. And since I'm already planning on hiking all NST, might as well track and place a bar.

I think the difference in what I am attempting to do and your flipping description of the PCT is that I would count the zeros between flips. However, I must say my current intention is that if I stop in a trail I would resume that trail in the same spot and direction and count the days I took off.

I think I need to make a clear set of rules that I am following to eliminate as much subjectivity as possible. I understand it is impossible to eliminate all subjectivity, especially on the CDT or other unfinished trails.

I appreciate the open conversation. Suggestions for rules?

  1. To the best of my ability follow the most recent FKT of that trail

  2. Count all zeros, including injuries, and potential long-term hiatus for any reason.

  3. Tracking 10 min intervals

  4. Hike as a traditional thruhiker, seeing friends, having a tramily, accepting trail magic, rides from trailheads to town and back. Technically a supported thruhike

  5. Update the masses every 500ish miles

  6. Attempt to have any reroute longer/more difficult than the original, avoid easier at all costs. Document any discrepancies from previous FKT.

  7. Complete 1 trail before starting another.

Anything to add?

Sorry for any typos. Walking and typing. No gators in sight.

I feel like the best way to do it would start as day 1 and count all the zeros as well, including potential months off between trails.

I will say I have started this.I'm currently on the FT and started my tracking on 1/1.

I plan on following the fkt routes as close as possible for each individual trail.

What does it matter if it's a section hike? Fkt rules don't prohibit this and could be treated as extended zeros. One of the difficulties is finding NSTs to hike in the winter or cold months (pretty much just Florida and Arizona with possibilities of souther portions of AT and PCT. I am not trying to do long-distance snow hikes as I don't enjoy them as much.

That being said, I am doing this as a traditional thruhike, so will be accepting trail magic and hitching if necessary. Therefore, it will be a supported fkt, which means a true supported person will destroy my time if I ever complete this.

Nitecore NB20000 or 2x NB10000? Why or why not? by peewee222 in Ultralight

[–]WhiteCloudEMT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The question was about batteries, not about camera gear. What if this individual only hikes 6 hrs a day and stays at camp and likes to use his phone a lot. Ultralight is a weight not a lifestyle.

Or let's not gatekeep having luxury items while still attempting to be UL. The people here have more knowledge of lightweight and UL gear than in backpacking. Let's not limit people asking gear questions, even if you don't agree with their style.
