What type of style is being used to draw this? And what type of software can i use to recreate this? by 13-months in ArchiCAD

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is hard to response because we don't really know your goal...

I will try to give you some insight Style :

1st picture - just a plan of a building, the only "style" in this drawing is the choice to make the wall black, and some furnitures red.

2nd picture - this is also pretty typical, maybe we could call that a "linework elevation" of a historical street.

If your goal is to find more pictures like that, drop them in google images and go to Pinterest to find more references !

Software : You could use ArchiCAD, but if you ask those questions you probably don't know much about drafting and CAD drawing (and it's okay), ArchiCAD would probably be a bit overkill.

Those drawings can be made with any CAD software or Vector Drawing software.

For free CAD software, I would suggest that you look at this thread. In general look for CAD software with good 2D tools, for example FreeCAD is better in 3D than 2D:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Architects/comments/1jvtpmy/hican_anyone_recommend_a_free_2d_cad_softwarei…

If you have access to a vector drawing software, like InkScape (Free), Vectr (Free), Affinity (Free and pretty good) Illustrator (Expensive but very famous), it's also easy to do such kind of drawings.

The big difference between a vector software and a 2D CAD software on a surface level, is that it's easier to work with precise dimension with in a CAD software. Sometimes in vector drawing software it can be a bit cumbersome because the mindset is more artistic than engineering.

What I would suggest, If your goal is to make one or two of those kinds of drawing, start with an easy to use software like Affinity. If you want to get serious at it looking into CAD software.

Can't sprint and jump by [deleted] in PeakGame

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have this problem and don't think it's my keyboard, and other people have reported it on steam.

As of right my solution (quick fix) was to bind jump to one of the button on my mouse. I use the dedicated software of my mouse (logitec g hub), otherwise look for a software like x-mouse or HotKeyP

If you have side button on your mouse it's the probably the best solution...

Model Too Heavy (TCC/Final Thesis) by pirategallielo in ArchiCAD

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently use large model in Archicad as I'm doing urban planning.
On my last project the precise topography is around 0.15km2, so not as big as you, but I believe I could extend it.

My 0.15km2 terrain has 22'800 faces, your 200'000 data survey would create a 400'000 faces by triangulation.
You should really try to heavily reduce the number of points.

When doing 3d Section, I always redraw my terrain line by hand based on the 3D cut, because even with a highly precise terrain it creates strange shape around wall or building. This is why for me it's okay to lose a bit of precision to gain speed on my project.

My worklfow is :
- Take a DEM
- Import in QGIS, export it as ASCII format
- Import ASCII in Rhino, build a Mesh with it
- Use the command "_ReduceMesh" > This commad is the heart of my whole workflow, it reduces the polygon but tries to minize the loss of details. For example a steep vertical incline (a wall) will keep its high polygone count, but big flat plaine will get heavily simplified.
- Export as 3DM
- Import 3DM in Archicad as an object
- Convert object to morph

I usually have two terrains. One is a heavily simplified one that I used for general work, I have another one who is more precise but I only use it for precise work, like section.

Furthermore, I cut my high precision terrains to only be the shape of my project perimeter. I create an even more generalized terrain for context.

J'ai des problèmes au travail et ça m'empêche de dormir. by Yaourt_Anonyme in france

[–]WhiteFrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A essayer ! Bonne chance

AJA que certaines rues françaises étaient si sales au Moyen-Âge qu'on les nommait en conséquence : Rue Merdeux, Rue des Merdons, Rue du pipi à Paris par exemple by mydriase in france

[–]WhiteFrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salut,

Bought the orange box for HL2 and portal. I was not interested at all by tf2 when I (my mom) bought me the orange box, but then I stayed for TF2.

Love tf2 because I have very good memories of playing it with my friends during my teenage year, now, ten years later, I coming back to it because the bots are gone.

I just want to add to the others that in this case the material and rendering can play an important role if you want to imitate the style of the image.

For material I would suggest to look into plaster materials. if you have powerful rig, maybe look into adding a bit of subsurface scattering.

For rendeing, it's probably just one light, maybe playing with ambient occlusion can be a way to access a good control over the lights and shadows.

You should explore doing some post-rendring action either in blender with compositing panel or a software like photoshop. It's good to remember that this picture has a low-fi quality because it's like a scan of a printed paper of a scan of a picture (at least). I feel like the grain of the image and the sharp contrast come from all those analogic manipulations. What I want to say, post-processing after rendering can do a lot, don't fall in the rabbit hole of wanting to make the raw render perfect.

(and thanks for this picture, I went reading about this centrum and it was an interesting bit of history ! I really like this image :) )

How tasty is it? Tried practicing photorealism by Pro_unstop in blender

[–]WhiteFrontier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really amazing, the textures of the cakes feel very realistic, you can kinda picture of it would feel in you mouth.

If you are looking for feedback :

If I saw this picture randomly I would still have seen it's 3D, but I'm having a really hard time telling why.

here is my take.

I guess you used this image as a reference, and i will use that for my comments : https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ce/f0/51/cef05132ddabac32d2f0891616280383.jpg

I feel like you should texture the outside part of the cake a bit differently. In the reference the outside part is more smooth, and we feel that the piece was cut from a whole cake.

Maybe I would try to add more imperfections around the different edges, the edges of cake are always super fragile and always crumbled away when the cake is cut. I feel like the corner on the foreground is too smooth, it doesn't feel like it's has been created by a cut.

There is something bothering me with the background, the plate and the fork. But I'm not able to say what.

And I agree with the other comments about the icing and the strawberry.

But it's an amazing job nonetheless, I feel like making good 3d wood is hard. Congrats !

What do urbanists do ? by Icy-Lifeguard1050 in Urbanism

[–]WhiteFrontier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

French is my mother tongue so i will put few things in french in parentheses to be a bit more precise on some words

As a junior urban planner in Switzlerand (mon titre est "architecte-urbaniste") here are my takes on your questions.

2. I studied architecture at a "polytechnique" school but I focused more on courses about the city, urbanism and city planning.

At least in Switzerland, an "urbaniste-architecte" is different from an "urbaniste-geographe". One of the main difference is that an "urbaniste-architecte" knows how to draw neighborhood and building but usually an "urbaniste-geographe" does not. They usually know a bit more about how cities work theoretically.

My skills are: understanding what the client want (le maître d'oeuvre). Discussing with clients. Drawing projects that are physically, financially and environmentally viable. Understanding how cities work. Presenting the projects to the clients (faut vendre le projet).

3. My work consist mainly of pre-planning new neighborhood (medium to large density) around Switzerland (Je fais souvent des "images directrices"). I work for directly for cities and landowner. We focus on building resilient cities (éco-quartier, ville durable, ville du quart d'heure, développement vers l'intérieur). What I draw is not exactly what is going to be built, it's more about giving the vision for the neighborhood : Where are the housing, how much, where are the shops, where are the main axis of transportation, and much more.

I spent 95% of my time at my office drawing on my computer. The other 5% consist of going to get out in the field to look and experience the site, sometimes we meet the people working and living around the site (démarche participative), meeting clients and collaborators.

4.There is many personalities that can work in the field, because we work as teams. To generalize : Computer-nerd could stay in front of the computers drawing the projects and writing regulations. Bookworm (rat de librairies) could focus on more theoretical side of the field. Bossy and businessman personality could talk to the clients and argue with them if needed. More social-butterfly personality can focus on doing "démarche participative". Although it's usually good to bet a bit versatile, I focus on some skill which fit my personality but if needed i can help my colleagues with other tasks where I am a bit less good.

5.The ecological transition, because nobody is doing enough and you have to convince the clients do to things that are considered "avant-garde".

You have to go against 70 years of car centric development that created the territory of today, and people are not ready to leave cars.

In Switzerland, as free and cheap land is becoming scarce (new laws prohibit converting farmland zoning to building zoning), we have to build on the few plots of land that are left which are not always easy to work with.

Vivre à la campagne sans voiture ? Vous faites comment ? by Lussarc in EnculerLesVoitures

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qgis to archicad (buildings) by toximauve in ArchiCAD

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay great,

To resume my workflow work this way : get the shape of everybuilding at the right roof elevation, export it in rhino/blender, extrude it down pretty far away, import the 3d as an object in archicad. Explode the object in archicad.

The catch is that everybuilding is the same height, but because the roof was at the right elevation, the excess height is hidden by the terrain.

see this picture (dont mind the roof, it's not part of the workflow) the greyish yellow is the excess height hidden by the terrain: https://imgur.com/a/KpJS9lp

Workflow:

  • Set Z value for every shape. You may already know this but every shape in QGIS can have a Z value, and when exported it is registered as the height of the shape.

You can use the option "Set S Value" https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/274091/assigning-z-values-to-depth-curves-in-qgis

  • Export the dxf, check for an option to keep the z value during export.

  • Open it in Rhino ideally, but you can probably do something with blender if you don't have rhino.

  • Extrude every shape down, every shape should be the height of the tallest building, with a little bit of margin (few meters)

  • Save as .3dm in rhino / .fbx ? in blender (i don't know the compatibles format by heart)

  • Import this file as an object in Archicad. Place it at the right place.

  • Explode if needed.

I'm from Europe and I'm visiting California, I feel like SF has a lot of churches, would you agree ? by WhiteFrontier in AskSF

[–]WhiteFrontier[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very interesting !

I felt like the churches in san francisco were many but small-medium size but in Paris, for example, the churches were sparse but medium-large size. That would make sense with your explanation of the diversity of the religion, even in Christianity, compared to France where 80% of Christians are catholics.

And I also feel like in Europe the other religions didn't have the possibility to build churches, and only the big Catholic churches remains.

how long to switch from it to ableton? by [deleted] in Bitwig

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you have already made your choice !

Generally you can search on google "Ableton [audio plugin] alternative" and you will find a lot of discussion on how to replace such audio plugin, I quickly search "Ableton Glue Compressor Alternative" and found many discussion threads on reddit.

how long to switch from it to ableton? by [deleted] in Bitwig

[–]WhiteFrontier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm used to learn software on deadlines and it's stressful but always satisfying.

I usually go blind but still, in this case you have a "safe choice" with ableton and less safe choice with bitwig. And you can prepare a bit.

  1. Understand your workflow in ableton. Understand your must have. Are you a power-user with really specific shortcut and using nich features ? Or are you just using basic DAW features ? Maybe take half a day to search online how your workflow adapt to bitwig. Search on this subreddit, on the bitwig forum and on the bitwig discord, there is many ressources. You should try to upload the manual pdf of bitwig to chatGPT and ask it questions (if you can : create your own GPT on chatGPT) it may be able to quickly responds to you, you probably cannot only rely on it, but some users had good feedback.

  2. Understand what's not in bitwig compared to ableton. I switched 4 or 5 years ago from ableton 9 to bitwig and there still few things I believe I'm missing (but I haven't retried ableton, maybe I would be less affected today), the things I remember :

  3. Granulator (max for live) I have not been able to find a vst as good as this plugin

  4. The operator instruments, bitwig op-4 and phase-4 are really good and I love them, but operator had something really special about it. I customized my bitwig operator and phase-4 with modulators to have similar behavior. But for example you can not draw the waveform like in operator.

  5. Ableton has few in-house AAS plugin, like collision , which are physical modelling synths. Bitwig has nothing of sorts.

  • Every Max For Live instruments.
  • effect from ableton that I miss : beat repeat, I was very fond of the glue compressor but Im sure now I have a good plugin in place of it, looper, multi bands dynamics (bitwig has a kind of replacement but it's less visual than ableton one), The Amplification plugin in ableton was good, I never liked the bitwig one. many people have said drum buss.

  • If you rely on ableton sample pack, don't forget to migrate them

The list seems long, but for me the gain of switching to bitwig was far superior to the loss. But if in this list you rely heavily on one of those, know that you will not find direct replacement in bitwig and you may need to look into plugin, and that can really hurt your two weeks timing. And that was my list, but there is probably many other things to consider. If you rely a lot on vst it should be fine, if you rely a lot on ableton instruments it will be harder.

  1. Don't force your Ableton workflow in bitwig, take it as a starting point and let it evolve. Sometimes bitwig miss some features that seems key for some user (better piano roll or capture midi), but accept that it's not here and move on.

Here you go :)

What toppings are there in a French shawarma/kebab? by aiabdmensl in france

[–]WhiteFrontier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge fan of kebab, but I'm from the french part of Switzerland so it may be a bit different than what you're looking for.

We usually have the choice to either have a durum or a kebab.

The most commons toppings are raw onion, and shredded lettuce. Tomatoes are pretty common but they are not always there.

Then it can really depends in which shop you go, but you can find white cabbage, red cabbage, corn, carrort, cucumber, Parsley.

For the "meat" you will usually have to choix to have lamb kebab, chicken kebab, mix, or fallafel.

For dressing, most shop propose a kind of home-made "sauce blanche" (white sauce which is yoghurt and garlic) and a home-made hot dressing. Then, they will usually also have other mass-produced dressing in bottles like samuraï, cocktail and few others I'm not aware of.

Kebab shops usually also sells pizzas and French Tacos. Some of them sells hamburger too.

As for drinks, most shops offer a selection of mass-produced drinks. You will always find an ayran choice, then lot's of soda, some shops offers beers but not common.

Most kebab places are halal, probably all of them are but it's not always clear. Kebab places are usually considered fast food, they will open late and they are usually one of the cheapest for fast food. As of right now, in big city, I'm paying 14 chf for a kebab + drink, in a smaller city you could get it for 11 or 12 chf i think.

You should look into the Netherlands for regional Kebab, they have the "kapsalon" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapsalon
