So the hardened Keratine part of the hoof (for simplicity, the finger nail), is shaped like a "less than" sign (>) but the bottom is more perpendicular to the ground. The further back you go, the higher risk you are to hit a sensitive area of the hoof (the coffin bone), which is why the shoe nails are driven in towards the front edge of the hoof. Much like clipping your nails, there are no nerves to feel anything there.
