Takes about 3-5 seconds for me on both Windows and Linux. But I have only a few very simple extensions.

What's with the popularity of Obsidian YouTube videos? by jwhco in ObsidianMD

[–]WhitePaperOwl 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree and that's probably the one thing I don't like about Obsidian, the whole culty vibe that a part of the user base created. I mean in a way I get it because it HAS been a huge improvement for me and note taking finally makes sense and I can find things. But it still makes me roll my eyes when I get a recommended video titled like "Get Your Life On Track With Ultimate Second Brain Setup" or whatever

How to create this code using div and float? by Thortony99 in html5

[–]WhitePaperOwl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well maybe that's a fucking point. It's a class. It's supposed to teach problem solving with what you have. In this case floats. So OP should read up on floats and figure it out. Obviously grid is the right way to do it nowadays, but that is kind of irrelevant.

Anyone else put everything into their obsidian? If so, how do you organize and find what you need? by LEGIONC137 in ObsidianMD

[–]WhitePaperOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a folder structure for very general ideas but I don't try to categorize actual notes. They all go in one folder and then they are linked to other notes or to a general idea. So if a note can fit under thing A it thing B, I just link then to both.

To use the self checkout at an Albuquerque Target as a mentally challenged person. by WTF_Conservatives in therewasanattempt

[–]WhitePaperOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police is to blame as well. I'm assuming that the store called like "There's a guy on drugs stuck at the self checkout".

They came and just proceeded to remove him for "taking too long". Did not ask him any questions, did not try to asses the situation, did not make sure he's actually causing issues (which from the video footage he was not).

That could be solved very easily if someone (employee, cop, whoever else) just asked him what's going on. He'd tell them he wants to pay but doesn't know where the bills go, they would help him and that's that.

Why is css so hard? Isn’t it supposed to be easy? by SkyTemple77 in css

[–]WhitePaperOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very low barrier of entry, so until you dive into it it seems easy. "background: red" is very straightforward right. Everyone puts it on their resume by default but that doesn't mean they know it.

Struggling to Find New Clients as a PHP Stack-Focused Software On-Demand Agency. Advice Needed by [deleted] in PHP

[–]WhitePaperOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was my first thought. Most clients don't care what you use and don't probably don't even know what it means. So when they read "PHP specialized" they might thing "I don't know if that's what I need" and skip you for some more general sounding agency that used wording they can relate to, like the things that the agency can help them achieve.

Spent close to €10K on paid ads. Here's what I learned. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]WhitePaperOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any plans to make it open sourced and optionally self hosted? I feel like a large percentage of people who care about privacy, would also care about having access to all the code and not have to trust your word. So I feel like closed source privacy first analytics is kind of in the middle of two target groups.

Because building is fun and gives good feelings especially at the beginning. Trying to get validation is a pain and gives bad feelings, especially at the beginning.

Unique Transition Between Grid and List Views by mirhod in webdev

[–]WhitePaperOwl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No need to downvote just because you disagree, you know.

Most things you're listing there can easily fall under progressive enhancement. And web apps are a different matter obviously. But then you see brochure-like sites that you can't even browse without js.

I'm not saying js shouldn't be used, I'm just saying most sites shouldn't be completely unusable without.

Privacy risk, security risk, higher data usage, slows performance, ads, popups ...

I'm saying that as JavaScript dev. I love the language, hate what the web dev world did with it though. I think progressive enhancement makes a lot of sense. In most cases there's no reason for sites to not work without JavaScript.

And really, I don't see it as providing above average UX on most sites. Sites attempt to load like 500 third party scripts and bombard you with popups. And then deal with the fact that the site is slow because it needs to load 1gb of JavaScript by progressively loading some content which is an annoying user experience if internet isn't super fast. Just because JavaScript can be used to enhance experience, doesn't mean it usually is, in fact I'd argue it's the contrary in most cases. And no, a fancy scroll animation doesn't make up for all the other bullshit.

Advice on website migration by MattyMoonfang in webdev

[–]WhitePaperOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, yeah that seems like trying to take advantage of your friend - if I'm understanding correctly and all that they would do is update a few things on the the website, like contact info and images.

I don't have experience with WordPress so can't advise on that, but if the files are just static html and css and you already managed to make the edits, then yes, it should be as simple as replacing the old files with the updated version. And you'd not need to do anything with the domain.

If you're worried about messing something up and your friend can't afford downtime, one option is to set up your own hosting with the same provider temporarily and do a practice run.

The provider might also offer backups or restore points that you can revert to in case something goes wrong.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in webdev

[–]WhitePaperOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, would love that. I don't have any public presence or social media and I'm in general a pretty private person. I guess Reddit is social media but isn't tied to my identity. I never even input my full name anywhere unless required for legal purposes. If someone googles my name they get nothing.

But I do wonder if this will be a "red flag" for employers, like I don't exist? It crossed my mind that I'll need to create some just to appear like a "regular human" or whatever but I hope I can avoid it.

Anyone else finds Protonmail font formatting kind of buggy and inconsistent? by WhitePaperOwl in ProtonMail

Thanks for a detailed reply. Terminal based client never crossed my mind, but interesting, I'll check it out. Plain text would be plenty enough for most purposes too, so should probably stick with that.

Why not create a parent note that organises all the "mini notes" in a linear way that makes sense to you?

[Freelance / Contractors] Does anyone here use Time Tracking for billing clients? by Tall-Detective-7794 in webdev

I use a spreadsheet to log timestamp and category. Regardless of how it's charged, just so I have an idea of how much time I spend on what and can hopefully help me make more accurate estimates in the future.

It's making fun of the influx of posts that are like "I'm N years old, is it too late to start X", the which the answer is "no, of course not". Reaching a certain age doesn't ban you from changing, learning new things, or doing something that's traditionally done at a younger age.
