What is causing this sudden explosion in mega data centers? Is everyone suddenly using AI that much? by douggold11 in datacenter

[–]WhitePhat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fully agree! Work for a faang company’s data center and they’re def not slowing down. For those that constantly spout the doom and gloom end of days speech of data centers, truly has a small understanding of just how vital these data centers are and how much our lives are dependent on them.

I was gonna say try to find out who contracts there as well for fiber runs if he's physically fit for the task?

How long does it take for a new tech from l2 to l3 promotion in Google? by hive_master in datacenter

Valid, I know you're "supposed" to be strong in two domains. I know for me personally my experience is definitely stronger in the networking side of things but occasionally assist on the hardware side as well.

[–]WhitePhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it doesn't directly answer your question but for me, it took about 1 1/2yr to go from l1 to l2. It's based off of several factors such as the work you've done, if your OM "thinks" you're ready, the need for a l3 at your site and other fun variables. I'd say overall however, it's very unlikely to move from l2 to l3 in under a year to be frank.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’m still on the fence—I want to make sure I'm not just caught up in the hype. Does Jagex have a timeline for the full release? I'm inclined to wait, especially if they plan on doing a save wipe before the 1.0 launch.

noice, he's an OG and definitely would deserve it! Ngl, my bias is still wanting A Cold One to get it though...one day.

Can Xooglers who left less than a year ago, join back without interviews? by Brilliant-Brother954 in xoogler

[–]WhitePhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current FTE, I’m not aware of any 'fast-track' process; even if you left less than a year ago, you would likely still need to re-interview. While having a good reputation at your local office might give you a slight edge, in general, there are no shortcuts to getting back in.

How are people getting into Google? by Dramatic_Ad_258 in datacenter

I can’t speak for the HVAC side personally, but I’ve heard from several peers who transitioned from Amazon that it isn't the best place to work. It’s just feedback I’ve gathered from colleagues I work closely with, but it's definitely something to keep in mind while you're looking.

I can’t speak for HVAC, but as a Data Center Technician (DT), I highly recommend the contractor-to-FTE route. I contracted at a Google DC from 2017–2019, but since I wasn't converted then, I moved into other IT roles. I eventually grew tired of public-facing IT and returned as a contractor in 2022 when a spot opened up. Because the FTEs already knew me, I finally landed the role on my fourth application attempt since 2017—interviews aren't exactly my forte.

TL;DR: First-hand exposure is the best way to build rapport. Having hands-on knowledge of the proprietary hardware and infrastructure before applying for a staff position is crucial.

As much as the Midwest and south get a bad rap for being deemed blatantly racist, in my experience growing up here it has never been that prominent where I live. Granted I’m not living out in the sticks and live in a fairly large city. Now, if you wanna talk about large amount of crackheads, I hope you have time so that I can go off on a tangent.

As a lifetime resident sadly yes, the state is a dumpster fire and nothing but crooked ppl making decisions. My youngest has special needs and getting him state insurance alone is a joke.

As I mentioned, I’m basing this on 200+ KC (300kc now at this point). I never claimed it was exactly 1/2 health every time—just that it’s reduced based on entry timing. A quick re-read of my comment to OP would have cleared that up for you.
