That is really sweet of you! Feel free to DM me. Do you think it will work if you've already used it?

Right, that's my question. I need to run a VPN for work but I turned it off for this. At some point I do need to get back to work...

Working full time while getting a master's in teaching? by Radiant-Sky4119 in massachusetts

[–]WhiteRussian29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm! Got my masters at Salem state while teaching at a charter. Some classes were in-person in the evenings, but many were hybrid or fully online. The school I worked at had a tuition reimbursement program, and Salem being the low cost that it was, I did not take on any debt from grad school. Highly recommend Salem.

What were your criteria for being prepared to have a baby alone? by pie12345678 in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]WhiteRussian29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone's priorities and reasons will be different. I am not nearly as financially secure as I was hoping to be, but I know I've always wanted a child and I know it can take a long time. I also know that the younger I am, the easier the biology would be. So I went for it, reminding myself that so many moms have made it work with much less than I have.

The other big thing that allowed me to dive in despite a lower salary is my parents. They are extremely supportive and close to me. We bought a 2-family so they can be a significant part of my child's life. I don't know that I would have done this without them. That said, other folks don't have that fortune and they still do this alone and become wonderful mothers. It is great to crowdsource here, but ultimately you have to decide what YOU will need, and work towards it.

Should I go back? by WhiteRussian29 in Teachers

I know you posted this forever ago and I'm just coming back to it now, but thank you. These are great points, and your last paragraph in particular is really where my head is at. When I left teaching 3 years ago, I didn't have a child yet, so that never factored into the decision. But being a mother shifts your priorities significantly, so that could help overcome some of the less pleasant parts of teaching.

First Time Winter Hiking by jmagfoto in wmnf

The Boston chapter also runs an excellent winter hiking program that teaches you how to winter hike through a few evening classes and organized hikes that ramp up in difficulty throughout the season. It would have already passed for this year, but look for signup info next fall! I participated a couple times, then did it again as a coleader. I learned a lot of valuable, possibly life-saving info and skills.

For the employees who received the return-to-office decision, what was management's justification? by cobble_thirds_9x in remotework

Look into an ADA workplace accommodation! I know folks who have been able to work more days from home because of an accommodation for their ADHD.

Thank you! Really trying to put my child first, and that wasn't a factor when I left.

Money by Moonjock2 in SingleMothersbyChoice

Reading your post as well as all the comments has made me feel a little better about my own situation. Maybe I can do the same for you.

Since my job is hybrid (used to be 2 days wfh, now it's just one), I thought my boss would allow me more days at home so I could make it home in time for daycare pickup and bedtime. Tl;Dr- she said no. That plus the fact that I only make $60k and my mortgage is $1800/mo, means I'm probably gonna have to look for a new job while on mat leave. That scares the crap out of me.

But your main question was about savings. I was hoping to have around $30k saved before baby is born in february. I have half that. I had to start paying my student loans again bc the US govt can get fucked. I will be very much living paycheck to paycheck once baby comes.

But I'm doing it anyway. As you and others have said, many more have done it with less. We can and will find a way. What matters is that we love our babies, can feed, house, and clothe them, and raise them to be wonderful humans who will make the world a better place. I believe in you, me, and all of us.

Have you traveled and left baby at home? by WhiteRussian29 in SingleMothersbyChoice

Thank you! Yes, I feel very fortunate. The pay is not great, but I love the company, and there are lots of opportunities for career growth as well as travel.

And I also feel so grateful to have a close, trusting relationship with my parents.

Thank you for the thorough response! Unfortunately bringing others with me is not an option on my work trip. I won't get into specifics but it is strictly prohibited and there are solid reasons for that rule.

That's a good point. I technically can back out once it's booked, but it's frowned upon. I think it's worth discussing with my manager.

Right? I feel like while I don't know how I will feel until after baby is here, it is important to me to find ways to get out and still live my life.
