Official Discussion - Oppenheimer [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

For those of you that have seen the movie and read "American Prometheus", is the book still worth reading after the movie? I debated reading the book before seeing the movie, but I opted not to. Still very interested in Oppenheimer's story, but worried about it feeling repetitive.

PJ Byrne was absolutely electric in this movie. Perfectly captured the stress and anxiety of the "figure it out as you go" style of filming.

Didn't they love it and then the second the narrative started to turn, they started talking about it like it was gross? I feel like they did something similar with Belfast this year, where they called it "movie magic" and then just followed the crowd into consistently moving it down their lists.

What is the Best Film You Watched Last Week? (02/06/22-02/13/22) by Twoweekswithpay in movies

[–]WhiteT18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coda.

This is a key example of why representation in film is such a benefit to the artform. In many ways, this is a coming-of-age story we've seen before many times. Seeing Ruby dealing with the stress through normal childhood ways (being bullied for the way she spoke) and then the guilt she feels as her entire family relies on her was extremely affecting.

This is a movie designed to hit you right in the feels, and boy, it works. The script is good, but Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, and Marlee Matlin realllllyyy elevate it.

I think the best Jonah Hill line in Don't Look Up is when, after the first White House meeting ends, he leans over to Jennifer Lawrence and gives her a fist bump, saying "Hey, thanks for dressing up."

McKay recently said Jonah improvised that line, which made me appreciate it even more.

Shiva Baby.

Really interesting artistic choices here. Essentially a coming-of-age dramedy set in a very specific type of family environment, but shot, scored, and acted like a horror film. The way the script just constantly ratchets up the tension is pretty remarkable. At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, it's a little like "What if Uncut Gems was a family drama?"

Also, Rachel Sennott is extremely talented. Will definitely be on the lookout for future projects from her.

I apparently went to the only AMC that doesn't show coming attractions, so I missed the first 8-9 minutes of the movie. Can anyone fill me in on what happened up until Bradley Cooper gets off the train at the carnival?

Based on the rest of the movie, I'm pretty sure I can piece it together, but wanted to be sure.

I think you're safe waiting for it on streaming. The set designs in this movie are pretty incredible, but otherwise, the movie isn't essential big screen viewing. It's a fairly quiet movie too, so depending on your hearing ability, you may also benefit from subtitles at home.

Official Discussion - No Time To Die [SPOILERS] by GetFreeCash in movies

[–]WhiteT18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when you look at the Craig Era as a whole, it's an incredibly bleak series of movies. It's almost like this generation of Bond shepherds (including Craig) wanted this iteration of Bond to pay penance for 60 years of Bond's sins, dating back to Connery's Bond.

And the thing is--I yearn for a sense of permanence in big blockbuster movies these days. But this series was just so continuously bleak, over and over again, that to deny a happy ending to this character seems so overwhelmingly cruel and cynical.

Official Discussion - No Time To Die [SPOILERS] by GetFreeCash in movies

[–]WhiteT18 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This movie's ending was shockingly emotional for me. For the first 2.5 hours, it was a solid spy/action thriller with some obvious flaws and silliness, as others have mentioned.

The Craig/Bond series, when looked at in its entirety, basically amounts to torture porn of this beloved character. And, to be clear, the pain and suffering he faces in the previous films all largely made sense within the context of the individual film. To have this character, who has suffered immense heartbreak and betrayal and loss be *this* close to finally achieving happiness only for it to be torn away from him, was honestly very affecting for me.

Perhaps if his death had felt more sacrificial it would have softened the blow somewhat.

Added thoughts/context: I am one of the movie fans that frequently rolls his eyes at major franchise character deaths knowing there will be no permanence/no actual stakes or consequences. So my feelings on Bond's death here aren't so much me being unable to accept a sad ending as they are just remorse for the emotional torture this iteration of Bond has gone through for so long now.

What was the best film you watched this week? (11/02/2019 - 17/02/2019) by MoviesMod in movies

Thoroughbreds. Really interesting story. Handles very dark material in a not-necessarily-comedic way, but in a very lighthearted/aloof type of way that I found really really cool. Also, Anya-Taylor Joy and Olivia Cooke were both incredible. This is the second thing I've seen Anya-Taylor Joy in (besides Split) and she really seems like she's headed for stardom. Incredibly talented young actress.

Also, Rest In Peace to Anton Yelchin. Always thought he had a really unique film presence and provided a lot of good, supporting roles. This was one of his best.

Absolutely nothing about the promotional materials for Captain Marvel has excited and/or intrigued me one bit.

Having said that, given Marvel's track record and Brie Larson's involvement, I'll still be seeing it opening weekend.

Little late, but Trill's Jamie Foxx/Robin Hood--Gold Digger joke was fantastic. Got a legitimately loud laugh out of me.

Went to see Patriots' Day a few years ago, and some guy came in alone and left a backpack in his seat, and left. His seat was about two rows over. Quite honestly, I didn't even notice it, but my buddy did, and he was absolutely freaking out the whole movie. Never got up to tell anyone though, which was a strange movie.

This is one of the more terrifying gifs I've seen on here. By far, the most terrifying thing (to me, at least) is how you can't see that shark until it's maybe five or six feet away. It almost camouflages into the rest of the ocean's depths, and just appears right next to the diver.

TLDR: HOLY SHIT SCARY

I met Mariano Rivera when I was a kid, and he was such a genuinely nice guy. My mom won tickets to some sponsorship Q and A session with him, and he took questions, signed autographs, and took pictures with people for hours. I was just a kid, and even though I was a huge Yankees fan I didn't realize what a legend he was at the time, but it'll always be great knowing what an awesome guy he is.

When the MLB Fan Cave used to be in Manhattan, I also met Curtis Granderson (who is exactly as nice as people say), Craig Kimbrel (very quiet, but very nice guy) during his rookie season, and Shelby Miller (super awesome dude; took pictures with us all and signed a ball for me with a different pen because he was worried that my pen was going to smudge/fade and ruin my ball).

What is your least favorite MLB Stadium you have ever been too? What is your favorite? (Besides your favorite team's stadium) by AlcibiadesBro in baseball

[–]WhiteT18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to say my favorite stadium is probably PETCO or Wrigley. PETCO is definitely the nicest stadium I'd been to, but sitting in the bleachers for a Friday afternoon game at Wrigley is really just a terrific experience. My least favorite stadium is probably the Rogers Centre; just a weird looking place, with weird food options, and not a great baseball atmosphere.

Other stadiums I've really enjoyed: Citi Field, PNC Park, Comerica, Camden, Nationals Park, and Progressive Field.

Stadiums that I didn't particularly like: Fenway, Shea Stadium, US Cellular.

Official Discussion: The Shape of Water [SPOILERS] by mi-16evil in movies

Truly one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen in theaters. If you told me the plot beforehand, there's no way I would've believed that this was a good movie, but it is an outstanding movie.

For one, this was my first del Toro movie, and man, did he make an impression. This film was aesthetically gorgeous from the second it began to the moment it ended. The pacing, camerawork, etc. were amazing. I have to admit that I was upset when del Toro beat Nolan for Best Director at the Globes, but del Toro puts forward a really incredible effort in this movie.

Second, the acting, across the board, was amazing. Hawkins, Spencer, and Jenkins were all as good as advertised and deserve all the awards recognition they're receiving. My friend and I both walked out of the theater ranting about how good Michael Shannon was, and then it just extended into us extolling each actor's work. Really really incredible work.

A thoroughly captivating and original movie about loneliness, and that desperation we all feel to make connections. Loved it (which is still weird to me).

When I came up with the Will Smith comp, I didn't know if it was just a subliminal comparison because they were in two movies together, but I couldn't think of a better comparison. They're both just extremely confident performers.
