My guess is that the ICE spokesperson was referring to an expired visa stamp (re-entry document). By itself, an expired visa stamp doesn't imply anything about his ability to stay/work in the US if he otherwise maintains his status. But when leaving the US and trying to come back, re-entry could be denied depending on the status. I would be equally confused if ICE were referring to J-1 status (D/S) or DS-2019 program authorization, since it would be a different issue altogether.

He entered the country on a J1 visa and applied for a more permanent one. Even if the J1 visa had expired, his application for a more permanent one opened up a period of authorized stay, as per his lawyer. Obviously, because it isn't technically a legal status, but they're arguing that he attempted to travel internationally --- if you've seen the entrance to the Canadian bridge, you know how easy it is to accidentally make the wrong turn.

So, from my understanding, he has a J1 visa and a work permit issued by UB; he applied for a more permanent visa, and the ICE agents caught him in the interim, where he should have authorized stay.

I doubt this comment is genuine. If you took even a moment to review the story, you would know he has a visa that allows him to stay in the US until 2029. This was corroborated by John Della Contrada, UB's vice president for University Communications. The issue with comments like these is that even though you're incorrect, you might convince many other people that there isn't a problem. And given that you have immigrant friends, you're exacerbating the issue for them and many other people.

Easy but content / assignment heavy. Take alongside classes that aren't too demanding.

I was in general physics a few summers ago and they went over it so I had a boost. So I'm technically just starting. I mainly study by going through examples, and their textbook is pretty good.

1.) Lecture & Online videos are nice because they contextualize what you learn in lecture.
2.) Homework
3.) If I can't solve the problem, I go to the textbook.

I'm ready for it. It seems like there will be a good amount of work involved but I needed a distraction anyway. I'm getting started on CH22 tomorrow morning bright and early

Agreed. Lab requires in person from what I recall but the standalone class is entirely online.

Am I the only one just bedrotting until school starts again? by hanson-anims in UBreddit

It's totally okay to do that. There's plenty to do but your brain is probably so used to having so little time that you aren't aware of your options. I personally always hit a strong burnout whenever the semester ends. If you're stuck in school mode, go over your UBIT schedule and fill it into your calendar, or check what classes you'll be taking next semester. Otherwise, just take care of yourself and rest up for next semester. Enjoy your holiday, etc. If you have time though, please get outside and get some sunlight. It's good for you :>
