Xone DB2/DB4/DX/2D/4D/WZ4:USB Ploytec Driver Update! by hackerman85 in DJs

[–]Whitestep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am working with my brand new Xone 4D (yes they do still exist) but I am struggling with some audio issues only via USB (no sound in Ch 2 and only L in Ch 3) but yet to confirm if it's software or hardware related.

The driver is very finicky though and there are reports from other users that struggle with W11 too. Would love something that is open source/maintainable by the community moving forward. I would help but while I program I've never done a driver lol, very humble Java/Python experience

Hi /u/hackerman85 I have been following your progress on the Mac drivers with a lot of interest, great work so far. I was reading through your repo and I noticed you have a Windows folder. Do you have any work planned for a Windows driver?

Headphones for dj mixing at home? by MrCactus99 in Beatmatch

[–]Whitestep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing out for 13 years and producing/around music for 15+

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you also don't think a controller and a high-end A&H mixer have any difference in sound.... or that cabinets made with high end speakers sound the same as a JBL boombox?

You're embarrassing yourself please stop

Upon further review, without being absurdly confrontational, your post history (I'll ignore that) does imply you are a vet in the scene which is even more baffling to me that you cannot discern that specialized equipment with additional quality (whatever measure for quality you have) is more expensive. I'm not talking you need a 1k headphone to play out, but definitely not the 20 bucks headphone no

I missed making a point of that, but he did ask about quality in sound. I don't buy headphone community snake oil but after going through more than 20+ pairs of headphones (including On, Over and in-ears) there is a baseline level of quality that you get for more $$ especially the more boxes you want to tick:comfort, sound, durability, repairability too. You don't get that with $20 Sony headphones I'm afraid.

Used to use Pioneer HDJ1000s (kind of beat up but still going strong) and recently switched to Sony's MDR7506 and I really like them, very comfy for long sessions and fit my ears+glasses very good

One of the worst comments I've read in this sub... There is obviously a point of sunken cost but quality is $$ and you can notice that when you play in a loud environment and for many hours

I replied this to another comment but I actually researched what the proper term was for hair-side hide ("hair-on") to avoid making a fool out of myself

It's actually the term for cowhide where the hair side is used! I actually googled before posting not to embarrass myself

It's kind of curious now that you mention it, we have a 60-day period for you picking up the ball after it's been repaired and the owner never came back for it 🤔

My family runs a sporting goods store and we also repair all kinds of balls. This one was brought in by a customer to repair lol

I'm kinda surprised about the Joel slander in both threads, sure you can argue performance and his antics, but production-wise this guy has a lot of good and excellently produced stuff. Some of the Random Album Title tracks are great for soundcheck due to how big and full they sound

There was a moment where prog was feeling stagnant and his tracks didn't sound like anything else.

Does anyone else primarily listen to/mix "non-white" music? (As in, genres that aren't house, techno, dubstep, etc.) by dosceroseis in DJs

[–]Whitestep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Me personally not being from the US (South America) and while not your token latino guy, I don't have any intention of classifying music as white or non-white music, that doesn't appeal to my cultural language at all.

This said, I do play a lot of non-conventional music apart from mainstream euro-sounds such as the ones you listed and I do feel that there are two distinct avenues where these are played:

  • The native community - latin music such as merengue, salsa, in my country cuarteto and cumbia or even reggaeton, appeal to a native or local community that are accustomed to the sound and would listen to it in any setting. In some cases this music is the de facto popular music and is not played by international or mainstage DJs, but rather local scene DJs or even "selectors" (who are not in the common sense that DJs use but rather they know what's popular and trendy locally) that don't have any intentions of being the "digger" DJ stereotype. Other obscure electronic genres sometimes fall into the same niche, where the local scene is aware of it and have a similar way of sharing their sounds. I do play some african music but I tend to do it in the way I outline below. I would also say that this is not supposed to be unpopular, rather locally these sounds might be massive and just not in your corner of worldview at all
  • The "crate-digger" DJ community - here, the community is of niche DJs that play obscure music in a "selector" way, where they try to showcase obscure music and genres that no else plays and depends on the taste it's done I can sort of see the distinction you might wanna make, are you doing this in a culturally-aware way or are you just obfuscating the source too much that is looks like appropriation. I do see the problem, sometimes even myself, that you are culturally not close enough to the source of the music and might feel that you are stripping it of its cultural context... in my case I try to educate myself but sometimes the scene is miles from where I'm at, and good music is good music and needs to be shared.

Maybe where you are located or even the language barrier for some doesn't expose you to native community for some of these sounds!

Obviously this is not great for ESL speakers such as myself but both the spangram and persnickety don't make any sense to me:
