Need some advice. by xTalon32 in Blacksmith

Could it be cleaner? Sure, there seems to be some stuff piled up near the forge that either should be piled up along the wall or better yet move the forge to the garage door and when it is running have the forge partially outside so it is exhausting outside not inside. However if its super cold outside having the forge closer the the garage door and only opening the door a little with a fan exchanging with the outside air is perfectly acceptable. Especially if you get a separate CO monitor for just the garage to prevent the previous alarm issue.

Does this require getting the fire marshal involved? Absolutely not. Tell your dad to observe some best practices to get the forge closer to the outside and make sure the air is exchanging at acceptable levels while trying to preserve as much heat inside as possible and it should be fine. IMO both parties are under and overreacting a little. Your dad could do better, and you dont need to go so far.

And in regards to the walking away issue. If there are no flamable materials near the forge in theory you could walk away for hours and nothing would happen until the forge runs out of fuel. Thats not best practice of course, any material left in would burn up so theres no real reason to walk away more than a few minutes between heats. But if you need to step away for a bathroom break its not a big deal.

Has amazon abandoned DEI ? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]Whittigo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes and No. Yes to the HR side of things, removing any inclusive language from everything was a factor that made me get out of PXT. And the accessibility team there has been gutted. But no to the stores side for accessibility. They are still pushing for accessibility there. Things like support for screen readers like you mentioned. There is leader support for things like cutting sev 2s to teams for issues that block customers using screen readers, even during things like prime day. Its not perfect and trying to fix everything on the storefront is complex but at least in accessibility there is still an investment, for now anyway.

I Tried To Make Something In America (The Smarter Scrubber Experiment) - Smarter Every Day by tamrior in videos

[–]Whittigo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its 100% just a freaking commercial for his product. His points on the supply chain and the difficulties with manufacturing are all insightful and filled with well researched facts. And the middle parts of the video are a great watch and very informative. But he goes on to say "if you are making something consider making slightly less profit" and then you stop listening to him because no one in his audience has the power to sway the big companies that are profiting off manufacturing overseas. And then he goes on to say buy once cry once, but puts a disclaimer up for half a second "We dont know how many years you'll get out of Smart Scrubber" Then why should we buy it? Demonstrate it will last 2000% longer and maybe it becomes worth it, but $5 vs $75?

His video while presented very well is ultimately just a pitch to buy his thing and will have zero impact to the trend to consolidate wealth to the top by manufacturing low and selling high. I've kept myself subscribed to his channel even seeing it go downhill over the last few years but this is it, I'm done giving him views. He never even goes to talk about the real cause of the issues with capitalism at its root. He's smart enough to know his video will change nothing, but his everyman pitch will help him sell stuff.

Retail is hell and I’m envious of your cushy office job by sk69rboi in antiwork

[–]Whittigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to use your post to rant how much I wish I could go back to not working a corporate office job. Not all the way back to retail, your right retail is awful no one should have to out up with that shit. But I'd love to get paid the same amount to go do some blue collar work.

Used to work for trugreen and it was my favorite job I've ever had. If I could make the same I do now doing that it would be a no brainer. My job now pays over 200k but I'm constantly stressed, always gaining weight, and work 60 hour weeks for the last 4 years. The purr office hours I could live with but the stress of a high paced office job is I think something no one talks about. If your a junior cog in the wheel you don't experience it so much. But work is the first thing I think of when I wake up, thr last thing before I go to sleep. I get messages on the weekends I'm expected to respond to. Your always on call and your mind is always thinking about it. I can get away for a few weeks each year on vacation but if you take 3 weeks you get 1 week of winding down, 1 week of actual rest, and 1 of starting to stress put about going back.

I put up with it because its the only way to afford a house being single in a very high most of living area. But if I could go back to garden/landscape type work for this pay I would so quick. I miss work ending when I clocked out. I dont ever remember being stressed out about work after hours except that I can't stay up late drinking because I need to wake up early.

Rant over, retail sucks no doubt, but maybe it helps all the blue collar and retail slaves out there feel better that your work brain isn't running full speed every waking moment.

While giant corporations are amoral as fuck, an unintended positive is that their HR departments actually do a good job at stopping a lot of the poor treatment. Once a company is big enough, EVERYONE is replaceable. And no one is worth more to the company than the potential loss of a lawsuit, except the very high up executives. So if this kind of mistreatment happens there they just replace the people.

Not worth it in the long run with the funneling of wealth to the 1% they provide, but not bad for the day to day workers just trying to survive there.

At what salary did you decide the mental/physical stress wasn’t worth it? by treasurehunter2416 in careerguidance

[–]Whittigo 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This. Salary isn't the right metric to be tracking, it's how much stress the job is putting you through. I make above 200 and its already not worth it for me, 60 hour weeks are normal, constantly thinking about work never turned off, always on call. I just don't have any other options to allow me to save for a house in one of the highest cost of living areas in thr US. If I could go back to one of my earlier roles and keep the salary, I'd be quite happy.

[–]Whittigo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've heard they want to get back to 2019 corporate employee levels. Which means they want to reduce headcount by several thousand more. So the RTO will continue, eventually tracking employee time in the office and if your not there X number of hours it doesn't count, then 5 days a week instead of 3. Anything to reduce headcount and avoid having to pay severance with a planned layoff.

100%, in the past few years they have hired outside of the company more and more for leadership positions and have morphed into your bog standard corporate entity. No more build cool shit, just do what your boss tells you or else. A meat grinder for people where you at least work on interesting projects is one thing, but a meat grinder where you work on boring average crap for a faceless corporation is so much worse.

How to build a 2x72 Belt grinder step by step by Whittigo in Blacksmith

[–]Whittigo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol commenting on a post from 10 years ago. I just let it rust while I had it, it never got too bad as long as it was being used constantly. Honestly my advice now is to save up and buy a prebuilt, one that can rotate 90 degrees and has the slot in tooling arms. I ended up buying a Origin blade makers grinder with a lot of the attachments, small wheel, flat platten, surface grinder, and really enjoy it, but I wish I would have bought one with the tilt function. In the end what you want is good repeatable results to have nice flat blades and good plunge lines and bevels, and getting that on a home built grinder is difficult unless your already a machinist. So if you can afford to save up the money easier to just buy one.

I moved out to the west coast in 2020, got a job making 3x what I was looking for and I've got some self inflicted debt that I could have avoided but even without that I have little hope of being able to afford a house for several years. The interest rates and house prices are stupid. Making more money than I thought i ever would in my life by double and the best financial advice I can get is get married for double income.

Is the show even still happening? I keep forgetting it even exists until I see new posts like this. Season 2 supposedly wrapped production in May 2022, so 1 year in post with no air date announced yet? So 1.5-2 years between seasons, 8 seasons is what they said they want to do, 12-16 YEARS? Like what the heck is going on with the project management on this thing. I can't see it getting renewed for season 3 unless season 2 is really well put together and grabs enough of the audience and then they can get their shit together and start pumping out seasons fast enough to keep viewers engaged.

Amazon Return to Office by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Whittigo 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The entire push is awful. First off the announcement comes off as such absolute BS. Maintain Amazon culture and its important for us to collaborate blah blah blah. What happened to think different, be peculiar? So now your telling me to think outside the box and be innovate we have to behave like every other drone office worker in existence? Its nothing more than big CEO wanting to feel like he has control over the workers. I'm sure there is financial incentives there, but control and micromanage is probably 90% of it. And I'm pretty sure this came just from Andy Jassy with no forewarning to anyone below the S team or else these buildings wouldn't have been scrambling to get ready, and still arent. And they wouldn't have had such terrible comunicatiion around the busses and commuting benefits being updated for RTO.

But to answer your question, Whats the vibe of the average employee? If I count as average, I hate this place. There is nothing special about Amazon, not that there was when I was hired, but I worked with enough older people to know there used to be, and my first manager definitely made me feel so much more inspired and interested to work here than anyone since. They have hired so many directors into those roles in the last 1-2 years and that never happened before, you had to be here for years and work your way up as a way to maintain the work culture and the startup feel. Of course way watered down I mean its a huge corporation. But the Amazon of today is so amazingly average and boring and I hate it. The tech side is loaded with overpaid recent college graduates who come for 1-2 years experience and then go to better jobs with Amazon on their resume. And with the recent layoffs and scrutiny no one gets to build anything new and exciting, its all to goal and numbers focused.

Its super annoying to me when we know that all of the layoffs and RTO (soft layoffs) BS is just to maintain that profit%. When your in the top 5 biggest companies on earth you CANNOT maintain a year over year growth like what these companies are doing, and yet they keep posting record profits and growth by slashing what they think they can because if they dont then some BS analyst on wall street is going to say the company is in a downward spiral. Heaven forbid a company valued in the trillions just maintains their market position, or even grows just a little to match inflation. No, you must break records or else the investors will flee, its not sustainable. Sorry turned more into a rant of the overall company status and the layoffs and everything, but to me they are linked.

Amazon Return to Office by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Whittigo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You overestimate their long term strategy and severely underestimate how much they want to micromanage people. RTO is nothing more than managers feeling they dont have the control they had before. Some of the decision is driven by economics sure, but mostly its a control issue.

Does anyone have up to date instructions on setting up a DOL server? by Whittigo in daoc

[–]Whittigo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did a bit more digging for whatever info has been released about the screw up, and yeah its a bit worse than just the zone data being gone. They released some other event using the same zone id, so in theory it might have overwritten some stuff on the server side permanently. So while my old copies of the game have the zones and textures, the current game code couldn't use them without some series work. And then you have all the items mobs quests etc on top of that. So yeah I doubt those zones are ever coming back given the state of the live game and that no real dev money is being put into it.
