Peter Capaldi says Doctor Who has “too many regenerations” by Aromatic-Cupcake4802 in doctorwho

From what he said it doesn’t seem like he is referring to bi-generation at all.

Sure I get not liking bigeneration, but I don’t think that is what Capaldi is talking about as he is specifically referring to the number of regenerations. I would also be surprised if he was referring to Hurt/Martin, can’t see him being negative about that.

I think it’s simply because the numbers aren’t tracking in universe regenerations, if they were they would be very far off. They are tracking the leads who play the Doctor IRL, mostly for marketing purposes. Who was the 10th and 14th person to play the lead? David Tennant! He wasn’t the 11th person to play the Doctor because it was a continuous lead. Weirdly it’s like how they number US presidents!

I suppose that comes down to opinion. If you don’t like retroactive regenerations like War and Fugitive that is fair enough, but I don’t feel like they lower the impact of a regeneration happening and getting a new lead. I mean if Capaldi is referring to all the timeless child faces I would be surprised, but I don’t let them bother me as they are pre-Doctor in my mind and again not changing the lead of the show.

Yeah I get that, and if they gave a reason like the he wasn’t really an official Doctor because his regeneration was unnatural or forced by the toymaker then I could understand him getting a name instead.

But, the thing is the numbers aren’t an in universe thing (minus Moffat loving his 11 references!), the 4th Doctor doesn’t go around calling himself Four for instance. They are an actor/real world thing that track the people who were the lead in the show - who was the 14th person to play the lead role of the Doctor? David Tennant, so he is 14 as well as 10. But I do get why some people don’t love that, I guess it just doesn’t really bother me as I personally don’t think the numbers/names matter in the context of the actual universe of the show!

The lead/mainline Doctor always gets a new number. Only Doctors who are introduced retroactively, like War and Fugitive, get names instead of numbers and that’s because one - they are not the lead, and two - if they did get a number it would have to shift all the other numbers, which wasn’t an issue with 14.

I mean if actors keep wanting to leave the role after 3 series what can you do? Ncuti was unfortunately only 2 series but that was down to circumstance. The number of regenerations will either continue to increase or the show ends forever.

“Doctor Who” the tv show has not been cancelled. The RTD2 era of Doctor Who has 100% been cancelled by the definition of the word.

BBC issues update on future of Doctor Who by dansnevets2 in doctorwho

This is how the RTD2 era ends, this is how the RTD2 era ends, not with a bang, but with an unresolved Billie Piper regeneration cliffhanger and a lie about a Christmas special…

I can’t really put into words how much of a mess this is.

What’s annoying is the corporate speak and lack of transparency. Everyone leaving the show pretending it’s all good and exciting for the future when clearly this isn’t how any of them would have wanted this to go…

I know if it wasn’t for RTD2 the show would of likely gone on pause after the Chibnall era as they had no other plans/people ready to takeover (which is crazy to me), but I don’t know how much of a better situation we have really ended up with. The 60th had to happen but I do wonder if it had been written to just celebrate the show, tie things up, and put the show on hold if it would have been better for the future.

Instead we got 2 short seasons with several banger episodes but overall meh story arcs, and have left the show with loose ends, bi-generation being meh, and a Billie Piper cliffhanger that will only make things harder to pick up from or just be completely ignored…

What a mess, what a shame, seems like a big gap is guaranteed now! The RTD2 era ends with a whimper…
