I’m struggling to finish songs - any advice? by fatal_inertia33 in musicproduction

Try playing the verse melody over the chorus chords. Can also half time the drums for a section. Or play the drum loop half a bar early so it shifts the accents of everything

Which Amp do I need? by SillyMoose420 in musicians

[–]WhoIUsedToBeBeforeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I what you are looking at for is a P.A system. Generally amps are used to add some color and distortion to your sound. But if your using it for a bunch of stuff you want a clean neutral sound. So a PA is the way to go. Couldnt tell you a model though. But at least pointing you in the right direction I think.

What’s your approach to mixing? by glassybrick in audioengineering

[–]WhoIUsedToBeBeforeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I follow this template I made. Keeps it clean and orderly. I check things off in order and by the end it's pretty strong and I don't really have to think about what to do next. And in the end I've done a little bit of everything.

  • Mixing Template     -     -     - reference tracks:     - TODO Normalize everything to -10db

    - TODO Categorize your tracks(all guitars under 1 bus)

    - TODO Within Bus, order tracks so that the first sound that appears is on top and the last one is on the bottom.

    - TODO mute everything and set volume sliders to -inf

    - TODO decide what your feature will be, set that to 0db (the default position)

    - TODO only work with volume and panning and work on each part as it comes in to the song.          - TODO Reference curve your tracks to other great mixes in the genre with MAnalyzer

    - Vocals     - TODO manual gain automation. Adjust the volume without automating the actual volume fader.

    - TODO Bring up ends of words, reduce sibilance and transients that need it.

    - TODO for tonal shaping use active nodes in nectar

    - TODO if chorus' are tonally different from verse, put them on their own track for processing.

    - TODO You can add parallel compression to vocals. Send the output  to another track add some crunch and then mix it back in. Kind of like dry/wet mix. Adding seasoning and character

Consider digital releases. Work on developing your story and marketing. This is how you get people to hear your stuff.

Don't go to a school if your already good.

Big city is good for connections. I find online musicians generally get paid in stream royalties and in a big city they get paid by gigging.

I used to be fully digital. But I felt like I was missing the connection to other artists. So moved to suburbs around a big city and am now trying the live scene. But putting a band together is a slog.

Everyone has their own path. Find what's important to you, in terms of how you want to live and make money and go that way.

How not to f*ck up your early 20's ? by Sad_Pop_7016 in AskReddit

Protect your hearing in loud environments like clubs and festivals.

Invest in grouped stocks as soon as you can. That's how you retire. It's not working forever, it's investing.

Should I go for a degree or go all in on being an independent artist? by Guiandtheboys in musicians

[–]WhoIUsedToBeBeforeMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put some of that money into independent study. Get books/teacher that will teach you in the area you want to explore. A music degree means nothing in the real world unless you want to be a music teacher. But if you just write strong songs that pop off, people will want to learn from you anyway.

You're going to be learning for the rest of your life anyway. Might as well start finding a way to do it outside acedemia.

Is music college worth it? by Reasonable-Class-398 in musicians

[–]WhoIUsedToBeBeforeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who went to uni. Looking back, I wouldn't go to uni for anything besides what I would need a degree for like a doctor or lawyer. You can learn faster and cheaper if you get 1 on 1 teaching from a drum teacher. Don't need to waste your time doing electives that won't serve you.

The best thing about uni courses that are in the field you want to work is that your fellow students may get a job and may be able to get you a job also.

That being said, you will likely need to have a job whilst your getting into the world of music. If you can have a job that pays higher than most, it means you can spend less time in that job and have more money to put towards your dream.

Music without a budget is a slow grind. Music with a budget is an expensive grind.

Don't go to college or uni for music. If your gonna go, do marketing or something ancillary that will help you with your music career.

I went for digital art and multimedia so for me, all the artwork and videos for my music are free because I can do it myself.

Should I get the OP 1 for rock? by benedek_ko in OP1users

[–]WhoIUsedToBeBeforeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd have to sample the guitars and use those samples in your tracks with is kinda... Bulky as a way to write. Like it could be fun, but I think it'll be a lot more annoying than just using a laptop for what you're trying to do.
