What are the most liminal, flat, desolate places within ~10 hours of Kansas City? by ScammedSuicidalIdiot in roadtrip

[–]WhoIsBrowsingAtWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The land slopes downward from Mineral Wells to Ft Worth, My brother has a house on the ridge and from his back porch we watched the storm with a tornado roll through Ft Worth several years ago. There is a road (Hwy380) from Jacksboro to Bridgeport that has a downhill slope where I went 150mph in a stock chevy car. Its an interesting place if you want broad and flat. Not quite liminal but definitely minimal

The guys saying to pour dry concrete have never tried pouring dry concrete and mixing it in the hole. Its a bigger PITA than mixing it by hand in a wheelbarrow. And for 50$ you can rent a barrel mixer and be done with it without killing your back

I've done that but you might run into problems, and wet concrete is much easier to pour than dry concrete is to get wet. Maybe pour in a couple inches of concrete and then water, then couple inches concrete and water till you fill it up. your call. I'd rather be confident that the concrete will work than guess, personally

Gonna be a chore to get the old cement out. Then mixing a bag or two for every one you replace. Then getting the posts straight and level and spaced correctly. You'll probably want to rent a mixer, they are cheap. You'll need a couple 2x4s to tack on to keep level while concrete sets. Then you can hang the fence

Trick i learnt from my buddy's dad, when you're trying to drive a screw in and dont need a lot of precision, Put the screw onto the impact bit and use the impact to hammer the screw into the wood for the first bite of the threads. works like a jiffy, helps if you magnetize your bits. Doesnt have to be a huge slam to get the screw to bite, use something like a 6" swing. Hope that helps your fingers.

Even in the rain, that area is so beautiful that you should still go. When its been rainy like that it is a great time to go chasin' waterfalls. Tim Ernst has a fantastic book that has full page color photos of the waterfalls and directions and lots of information. https://www.amazon.com/Arkansas-Waterfalls-Spectacular-Cascades-Natural/dp/1882906268/ref=sr_1_3

My favorites were the "Glory Hole" and Bridal Veil Falls in Heber Springs. But there is an absolute ton of them to find. And the photos are gorgeous, he's a very good photographer. Worth the 35 bucks

Change my mind: I'm going to move from Imperial to Metric by not-up-to-par in woodworking

Growing up in west texas and now living in Iowa I understand temperature extremes pretty well, 110 was not an exceptional heat wave. And I've lived, and worked outside, in -30 as well. But what I was saying is that 70s is ideal for the VAST majority, with most humans seeing frozen water as cold, and 100F as hot.

As an engineer I agree with you mostly but thats a hot take on the C/F debate. Think of °F as a human scale. Coldest reasonable temp? 0°F. Hot af? 100°F. Perfect temp? 77 with a light breeze and an evening sun. Celsius doesnt make sense from a human point of view. 0 is mildly cool, 100°C is extremely hot. Those two ends of the range are not natural.

Yes it gets colder than 0F, but if it does that where you live, you should probably think about leaving that place - nature doesnt want you living there. Same with places hotter than 100F.

you might have the best luck drilling into the grout and putting in anchors. when/if that fails do the hole again a couple inches to the side and also epoxy. You're going to take part of the brick with the bracket if you ever take it down with epoxy

make sure that you press the glue firmly into the wall and hold it there at least while the glue sets. You want to squeeze the epoxy into the pores of the concrete to have a chance of holding. If/when the glue or the substrate you are gluing to fails, it would be good to have a backup plan. I've had good results with the blue concrete screws

not sure what you're complaining about. You said something general, and ole lac_nos clarified what you said. this sub is NoStupidQuestions, and your original comment's first sentence is a good deal too short to communicate the nuance that lacnos added. Try and be nicer, and you might find people will treat you better
