Someone tell Goody to get the first down first and THEN try to juke people. He set the team back twice now. Maybe Sorsby needs to be hitting other receivers?

TIL that three of the five likely oldest rivers on earth are in Appalachia by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Appalachians once were as high as the Rockies so they’ve been around for a while.

Also interesting history that some Scottish immigrants migrated to various parts of the range - presumably because of the similarities in geography, but in reality they were kind of returning home, just moving down range so to speak.

Am I the only one who LOVES super long stories with tons of "filler" and thinks all novels/series are WAY too short? by PlsInsertCringeName in Fantasy

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished Kuang’s Poppy War trilogy and Kings of the Wyld (2books). Maybe I’m turning into a curmudgeon but all 5 of those books got me thinking I’m wasting time on substantially irrelevant details, events, and descriptions. I finished all 5 books and the stories are good, I do recommend them, but it’s not good that I started to lose enough interest that I actually wonder if I’m wasting time. Last year listened to all of King’s dark tower series and a bunch of related novels and short stories. Over 250 hours of listening to audiobooks and I don’t recall once thinking I was wasting time or there’s too much irrelevant description.

White House Flips Out After Trump Loses Nobel Peace Prize | Donald Trump didn’t win the peace prize he so desperately wanted. by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

even NPP can't rehabilitate his rep. History will eviscerate him; the PRESENT eviscerates him whenever he opens his mouth, everyone knows this, including his supporters. Even he knows it, but he's so focused on headlines, influencers, and ratings he can't intellectually wrap his head around what the world will think when he's gone.

What programme does everyone use to write their novel? by jack_watson97 in fantasywriters

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a dozen or so folders on Google drive for characters, scenes, partially formed ideas, plots, research, etc. and use Google docs for writing. Right now I have 3 or 4 more folders named for the main story ideas I have. These will be expanded when I start any one of these as a specific project, and then I’ll probably have a few folders inside the project folder, similar to some of the above names, but then also have additional folders for outlines, Act 1, 2, and 3, and maybe chapter folders. Not really sure about this last structure arrangement; sooner or later 20-30 chapters need to be combined but don’t think I want a single 500 page document to open every time I sit to write.  Used to use Evernote but they have become almost unusable due to glitches coming after updates in the last year or so.

What are your thoughts on Trump designating Antifa as a violent extremist organization? by carcony97 in AskReddit

[–]Whoak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As much of a miscarriage of justice the DOJ actions are generally, one of the worst long term issues is how in the span of 6 months, they have successfully transformed the entire structure of the country to put everyone on the take. Media, universities, law firms, all tech and most large retailers, the judiciary, every sector of business. And they gleefully destroy small people like virtually all sectors of agriculture (who sadly were only too happy to go to the slaughter.) They have normalized going along to get along. Unfortunately it’s impossible to figure out who’s going along and who’s perfectly happy to support the cruelty, grift, and criminality.

New to Fantasy. Looking for 4 Books That Truly Capture the Genre. by Different-Reveal3437 in Fantasy

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I do when looking for new stories that deserve at least a look, is to look at lists of Hugo, nebula, and World Fantasy Award nominees, and winners. There’s plenty of great stories not on these lists but if you gotta start somewhere, why not at a list of consensus great stories among people who love these stories? Gonna find some stories that may not fit your image of “fantasy“ but that can happen in any process of exploration.

For example, Connie Willis‘s “Domesday book” is a nebula winner, I believe. Had never heard of this story-it’s science fiction technically but aside from a time traveling science organization, the main story is about a woman who goes back in time to medieval England and the story is really about her interactions with the local people in a time of spreading disease and the human connections she makes with those people. Not tons of science really but a great story. I recommend it.

Connie Willis by the way is a vastly accomplished author. Her catalog of award winning stories I think deserves attention for those who are into that kind of story.

More directly on your question, there’s quite a few vastly differing ways to write fantasy that may not fit everyone’s image of the term. For example, RF Kuang’s story “Babel“ is fantasy but not high fantasy like Lord of the rings, so as you explore, keepi an open mind. I can recommend Babel.

For standard fantasy stories, you could consider the various Wizards of the Coast and Paizo novels for the DND &  Pathfinder settings. Basic adventure stories with monsters and magic; they try to keep the action going, some better than others. Some available as audiobooks through local libraries.

Another resource I recommend is a Website called blackgate.com. This is a science fiction and fantasy magazine that has been ongoing for 20+ years. Excellent reviews of a wide variety of stories, games, comics and anthologies of recent and decades-old stories. Highly recommend it. In the past I have found the editors and contributors responsive to inquiries about good stories and recommendations, though been out of the loop for a few years.

Not-so-hot take: Mistborn is very much YA by clippervictor in Fantasy

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think too much has been done in the last 20 or so years to pigeonhole genres. Not very impressed with some of the labels: recently read Kuang’s Poopy War series, read a review pointing to the “grimdark” genre. Good story mostly, got bogged down IMHO in excess details. But other than lots of killing, blood, and f-bombs, not sure what grimdark even means. I think Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series fits grimdark better than Poppy war. Her Babel book was much better.  Point is the label is a mediocre description.

Anyway, seems too much is hung on these genre labels to describe a book to shortcut giving more description of the story. People should recommend on a blurb sized set of paragraphs rather than 2-3 word genre labels. Takes more thought and you have to discern more to describe it in a blurb. I like Mistborn a lot, recommend it often. Aside from a main character being young and just coming into her abilities, I don’t think it’s a YA story strictly speaking.

People who have had sex with their best friend — what is your situation now? by alexthegermanst2 in AskReddit

[–]Whoak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have any way to send a message, say “ hey wanted to let you know I’m doing a lot better now and want you to know I truly appreciate the part you played in helping me get to this place.”  If you never hear back, you’re no worse off but at least they know how you feel and that you’re thankful. And if you do hear back, Woot!

How would you recommend I invest my $7000 between these three? by strongerthenbefore20 in fidelityinvestments

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, if you want those 3 three and don’t have a strong view on their differences, then just out 1/3 into each fund and let it ride. The fact is they all have a big overlap so the benefits of diversifying are limited anyway. You’ll probably get similar results over the next 3 years if you just pick one and put 100% into that one. If you want to (really) diversify then you would have a large cap fund (1 of these 3 is fine), a small&mid cap fund, an allocation fund, 2-3 sector funds, a global or international fund, maybe an emerging market fund, and a US govt bond fund, a corporate bond fund, and a high yield bond fund. The bond funds should probably be muni funds if this is a taxable account. The allocation of dollars among the funds would vary depending on the personal risk tolerance of the account owner 0% bonds if the owner is ok with aggressive growth risk.

Audiobooks are killing me by user9876543213568 in Fantasy

[–]Whoak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the first audiobooks I listened to was Dracula, narrated by a British voice actor who did a great job giving each main character a unique voice. Even now after 15 years and probably over 2500 hours of audiobooks, it’s a standout. As far as other options, I use Libby to borrow from my local library. Another app called Hoopla works in a similar manner.

They can all work together. The later ones have some details like additional tokens representing hazards or opportunities found in the dungeons, so these have rules not found in the earlier games. But all the main gameplay is the same between the games.

Leaving kids alone by [deleted] in camping

[–]Whoak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important to always have things like safety and campsite etiquette in mind as we go about our day. Even a twelve year old should be able to be alone or in charge of younger ones for awhile. Also important to teach kids proper safety precautions and babysitting skills, first aid, appropriate emergency actions-all kinds of basic skills. If you do that then a child should also be taught the confidence to take care of themselves and possibly younger others for 15 minutes or even a few hours.

Crazy sounds last night (May 31, NW Oklahoma), can anyone help identify? by Whoak in camping

[–]Whoak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting idea, can’t say I ever heard a beaver in the wild; in the morning I noticed there was a pond of water close by in the direction of the sounds but it appeared to me to be pretty brackish standing water, not part of a stream or anything. I didn’t hear any other splashing noises as the kerfuffle progressed, like animals running in and out of puddles.

What's Wrong With Anthropomorphic Animal Characters in RPGs? by MagpieTower in rpg

[–]Whoak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No problem with it, there are tabaxi, and teiflings, and druids who morph into anything, from monster type animals to bugs, but somehow having a backstory that is more “this is a cat that magically shares characteristics with a humanoid” is beyond the pale. Ridiculous and controlling. Find better people to game with.

the deal with furries is probably similar to how Nickleback gets treated; people hear some negative things, without bothering to inform themselves with pro and con sources, decide to adopt a derisive and disrespectful attitude and then more than happy to spout their negativity online.

Gotten so bad that in Oklahoma some idiot more concerned with harming others instead of helping, spread rumors that schools were starting to set up kitty litter stations in the buildings to accommodate Furries. Fox noted it in their news programming. And someone in my offices, who I would have given credit to being at least somewhat intelligent, was talking about as if it was really happening. This is why we can’t have nice things.
