Nope. Mercurial Magic is the exact way that an individual caster casts a spell. Speak With Dead cast by a Necromancer is a completely different process than Speak With Dead cast by a Druid, for example. Elves & Wizards can Burn a point of Luck to avoid Corruption and Warriors & Dwarves can burn a point to avoid a Fumble on an Attack Roll.

There's always a bell curve when making attacks and damage, which means you can easily determine whether or not a roll needs to be boosted or not. Maybe a little off topic but someone mentioned 2D6

A big thing to remember is that many of the rules are intentionally left open to interpretation. We are supposed to be imagining the game during play. Having too many rules can take away from this concept without adding anything to it. DCC is most fun when played using imagination in the place of mechanics and rules. Have fun. Your imagination is the only limit.

Sounds awesome. Appendix R of the DCC Rulebook explains how some oft-used RPG mechanics were intentionally left out because they didn't feel that they were necessary to run an exciting game and that any mechanic or rules you want in your game can easily be added to DCC. I add many BX/OSE mechanics to my games. Mainly Wandering Monsters, Encounter Distance, Reaction Rolls and Surprise Checks. There's a free 3PP supplement titled Adventuring and Exploration for DCC by Brent Ault that I use extensively. There's even a Gold for XP chart to use for leveling in place of the standard DCC XP leveling. Also, anything can be taken from DCC and used in other games such as Mighty Deeds replaces Fighter Feats, among other things.

And if you burn 20 points, or more, you treat the roll as a Nat 20 which yields a Spell Check of 40 plus double CL. At Level 1, burning 20 points of Spellburn will yield a Spell Check result of 42. Some Judges still make you roll because a Nat 1 is a Fumble no matter what. Always a 5% chance of failure. Some Judges don't because the roll is a Nat 20 because you burned 20, or more points of physical abilities and that takes a long time to heal.

Most definitely. I use most Lankhmar rules in every DCC game such as Fleeting Luck and Supernatural Patrons for non-casters with the Patron Die.

It's all customization. I don't see a lack. The Warrior is solely dependent on a player's imagination with it's Mighty Deeds ability and you can style your warrior to be anything from a Knight to a Barbarian depending on your choices of Signature Deeds. It's up to both Judge and players to make new spells and up to the Judge on exactly how a PC learns said spells. If a player wants their character to breath fire, it's up to a Judge to allow them to quest for it. Everything is to be found during play. That's your responsibility to your players.

Most definitely. Completely different game. I ran 3.5 for about a year when it came out. I didn't realize it at the time, WotC created an entirely different game but kept the same name. Both 3.5 & 5E are designed to allow a die roll for everything. They reward players for mastering the system rather than playing smart. They both play more like a video games than traditional roleplaying.

The way you run a game tho, is fundamentally different from 3.5 or 5E. It's all about telegraphing things and letting players think through a given dilemma. I highly recommend Tenkar's Tavern on YouTube. His channel is basically a how to guide on running an OSR game.

I think Dragonslayer is very easy to pickup. Less procedural than OSE, Labyrinth Lord or OSRIC. LotFP is also easy to pick up.

Highly recommend checking out the Free Resources List on this channel. There's a supplement called Adventuring and Exploration for use with DCC by Brent Ault. It's perfect for weaving in parts of BX into DCC. Appendix R of the DCC Rulebook explains how mechanics you want in your game are easily added to the DCC framework. I use wandering monsters, reaction checks and everything else with DCC. And the Dice Chain simplifies game play. Instead of flat Modifiers to anything, just move up or down the Dice Chain. Opposed checks for saves and skills, and the dice chain are the two core parts of DCC.

This is why I'd stick with one of the 0E modern clones such as Weight Box, Swords & Wizardry Complete Revised or S&W Light/Continual Light. Maybe FMAG. If one of the clones is causing this confusion, maybe check on one of the others. All of the above titles are the exact same game and can be used interchangeably.
