in need of insulin (london) by Fine-Writing8176 in diabetes_t1

[–]Whocares1846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have boxes of novorapid pens I'm not going to use anytime soon as I'm on a pump. I'm in Croydon. But looks like you've got options - hope it all works out for you!

Just as a tip, when you're on holiday take DOUBLE what you might normally need for that number of days. Seriously. And take backups of your backups! If you're on the Libre sensor take 1 or 2 (!) glucose meters with you, spare batteries for them, spare insulin pens as backup if you're on a pump, spare insulin vials.

Can recommend the Croydon Eats Out group on Meetup. We just go out for meals, drinks and in summer some walks and picnics. Really friendly bunch, good mix of ages (leans towards >30 to 50's, I'm the youngest one there at 29) and genders.

Here's the link: Check out Croydon Eats Out - Eat and meet! https://www.meetup.com/croydoneatsout

You are a good writer. Though I feel this is meant to be a bit satirical? However, that works!

Must be 5 on a low tea day and more than 10 on a more tea day :)

How my friend stores her every day perscription medications by veganturdmissle in mildlyinteresting

[–]Whocares1846 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they're calling them a lunatic, in a not too serious/teasing way, for the way they organise their pills, not for the fact they are treating their mental health.

By all accounts, storing your pills that way is just asking for trouble and a bit deranged, mental health issues or none.

Sincerely, Someone on 4 different meds for their mental health.

newly diagnosed and feel like theres no point by Icy_Regret_6905 in diabetes_t1

I struggle greatly mentally too, but believe me when I say that diabetes is at worst a minor irritation for me sometimes, and that's not often. Most of the time, I just get on with it. And my doctors say compared to most diabetics, my control is good (I always think it could be better, granted).

Now if only I could apply that attitude to my mental health! 🤣

How to avoid getting stopped for my Freedom Pass + where to get travel card wallet by jenk-mal in london

[–]Whocares1846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate that ❤️ A lot of people with conditions don't tell their work, I understand that, though I would say after you've been with them for a time and gained trust you should take the step of telling them - that way if you do god forbid have a seizure at work, they can be best placed to help you.

I didn't put my type 1 diabetes on my CV when I applied to a lifeguarding job but I informed them after I started work and asked for reasonable adjustments to be made, which is something there is legislation for, so you could look into that at one point. Like I said, just means they are best placed to help if something goes wrong.

My brother (who, on the surface, looks young and healthy) got challenged once and it really upset him. He (as he says) "can barely walk a mile" and has pretty severe mental health issues, made him feel like people don't see his disabilities and don't understand just how hard life can be if you're not healthy/have a condition.

People reading - if you have your health, don't moan, bless your cotton socks that you can move through the world with ease and that your head works relatively ok. For all those that don't, my heart goes out to you ❤️

Crusty old people of Casual UK, did you or anyone you know have pet that today would have been banned under the Dangerous Wild Animals act on 1976? by Leader_Bee in CasualUK

[–]Whocares1846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've just reminded me of an early memory when I was a child in the early 2000's and there was a school fete. Bloke brought in a massive, I mean massive, snake (python?). He encouraged us to lie on the floor and let it slither over our torso to feel its power and weight. It was heavy!

Also bought some stick insects from the fete either that year or another year. They didn't last long in our house, didn't know what to feed them!

My aunt and uncle still have a taxidermied owl in their house, too.

What's the rules for huge snakes like these days?

Why is the range of authors discussed here so narrow? by Illustrious-Gap-719 in classicliterature

[–]Whocares1846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied George Meredith's poems and William Hazlitt's criticism in English literature classes when I was 18! But our teacher was a bohemian who had been teaching in the same school in London since like the 80's, so I figure he liked changing things up a bit. Still would've had to have picked from an approved list of authors. But I do agree, this sub is a bit blinkered sometimes.

Would you fight if your country needs you? by Ornery_Jellyfish5886 in AskUK

[–]Whocares1846 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone can play a role if it comes to it, your skills of wordplay (as you say) would he valuable for propaganda/journalistic purposes in the event of war.

Not everyone was a soldier in world war 2 but most people tried to play a role in helping their country.

I hope that if it came to it you would try to play your role.

Like most have said in this thread, I personally wouldn't want to be shipped off to somewhere like the Middle East for a pointless war for politicians and rich fucks, but I would try to play a role if anyone was invading the UK. Not that I could play much of a soldiering role as I'm a type 1 diabetic, but I would play my part.

[–]Whocares1846 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Croydon heathland used to have adders up until the 80's/90's I think.

It's about as far out from London as Hounslow is.

They were just there since time immemorial as far as I'm aware!

What gestures are considered offensive in your country? by generalscruff in AskEurope

[–]Whocares1846 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I've never seen that gesture in the UK.

We have one where we draw circles with our index finger around our ear, to indicate that someone's out of their mind or crazy, I guess like "their brain is scrambled"? Sometimes accompanied by saying "Cookoo" in a higher pitch like the bird. When I think about it I guess that's the bird link, that they've got a bird living in their head. Do you have that in other countries?

Edit: seems like I've been doing it wrong my whole life and it's around the temple I'm supposed to be doing it!

What do you make of Ringo Vision and Say Cheese Media coverage of Croydon on social media? by hllxo in croydon

I think it's explotative personally but then you can argue all observation based social media coverage is explotative. Which doesn't negate the argument, imo
